Way OT: Winter Cold (illness)

I spent much of the day at the office yesterday sneezing and using lots
of "kleenex" tissues. Frequent washing of hands and spraying Lysol
around. I forced myself to eat lunch yesterday even though I had no
appetite. I took an antihistamine when I got home but it did not help.

Last night was not at all hungry, either. I was running a mild fever so
I hunkered down on the couch before dragging myself off to bed last
night. My poor little cat, Cleo, didn't know what to make of it. She
wanted to play but I felt like crud. She did carry some toys into the
"TV room" and I tossed them around for her but I really just wanted to
sleep.

The symptoms continue today. It's a full-on Winter cold; first one I've
had in decades. Lots of sneezing, sore nose and I woke up with a sinus
pressure headache.

The office is closed today and tomorrow for Christmas. Hopefully I'll
be better when I go back to work on Thursday.

Got some bad news yesterday. Oh, it was not unexpected. The man who
owns the company I work for has been talking about this for the last 6
months. He finally decided to shut down the company early next year.

My manager, the CFO, and I will be among the last to go since we are the
Finance department. Got to resolve all the outstanding payables and
receivables even after all the other employees (who are not in South
Carolina) are gone. I'll be looking for another job next year.

Merry F'ing Christmas and Happy New Year!

Holy Cow Jill. Not a lot of good news there. Sorry to hear that you are
ailing, and sorry to hear that you will be losing your job. I guess you
will have to get out and start looking for another job. There is no need
to stick out to the end if something better comes along.

I was lucky to have a degree of job stability when working for the
government but that was not a sure thing. I transferred out of the
maintenance branch when it became increasingly obvious that they were
going to be contracting out a lot of the work. I was luck to get into
the enforcement branch before that happened. Three of my former
positions were eliminated. It was a good move because that was where
most of the new job postings were. Even that was not a guaranteed
because there was always talk of privatizing that or having it shut down
and taken over by another agency.

Every year they would send us to "changes and transition" seminars where
they advised us how to deal with the loss of our jobs. One line they
pushed was to view it as an opportunity, a chance to get out and do what
we always wanted to do. Nuts to that. No one wants to put years and
years into a job only to have to turn around and look for a new job and
to start from the bottom.
Best of luck to you.

Thank you, Dave. Something better coming along in a small town is
problematic. I got very lucky finding this job. Perfect hours, good
pay (NY wages), great manager. I'm not going to leave him in the lurch.

At my my age? Most people don't want to hire a 64 year old woman. They
presume "oh, she'll be retiring soon" so they hire someone younger, even
if that means the younger person will move on and they'll have to hire
someone else in a year. They also don't have to pay them well.

I also can't see to drive in the dark or at dusk (no street lights) so
my work hours need to take that into consideration.

I have some ideas. Or I may just have to retire. It's not what I want
to do. I enjoy the work I do and like the other people who work in the
office building. We'll see.

Would be nice to work to full retirement. When I hit 66, I started 4
days, later 3 days. I liked my job. There may be some part time
opportunities you may like. Any potential in the building you are in
now? I imagine they will all know you are available soon.

The job I have now is part time, 4 days a week, hours 10-4 M-Thu, but
flexible. Excellent pay. The small building where I work, the offices
are small, mostly leased to different types of small independently owned
companies. None of them need employees. But some of them might know
someone who does. :)

It's a tiny office with no room for colleagues you could try to
control. And if you get too worked up, you can stick your head in the
cooler.

Your boss and manager know lots of other bosses and
managers. Get them to network their contacts on your
availability.

One door closes; some one holds another door open and
invites you in.

That's why you are absolutely perfect to fill in for some
employee on temporary absence for maternity leave,
training course etc. You don't seek longterm commitment
from an employer.

You bring a lifetime of experience, adaptability, calm
self confidence. You can do your kind of work with one
hand tied behind your back, because you've done it all a
thousand times before.

You don't need to build a career, you won't be jostling
for promotion, or dabbling in office politics. You are
single, own a home, won't get pregnant, divorced,
menopausal, or move away. No messy midlife dramas will
impinge on colleagues or employer.

The perfect employee. A sensible, stable, flexible,
totally reliable mature person with useful skills and
great references, who is available for fixed short
contracts.

Considering her abrasive behaviour in RFC, and her resulting
unpopularity here, she might cause friction in a team or among her

Not really. The company is based out of New York and the only reason
there is an office here in SC is because people started working remotely
due to the pandemic. They actually closed the physical office a couple

True, I'm not looking to build a career. But I would like to stay at
one job for as long as I can. If the owner of this company hadn't
decided to shut things down next year I might well have been working
there until I was 70.

I have some ideas. Or I may just have to retire. It's not what I want
to do. I enjoy the work I do and like the other people who work in the
office building. We'll see.
someone with a decent attitude and work ethic is well
worth employing, just put it out there when you talk to
anyone that knows you well that you are looking and
listen.

i hope something turns up for you. :)

Holy Cow  Jill. Not a lot of good news there. Sorry to hear that
you are ailing, and sorry to hear that you will be losing your
job. I guess you will have to get out and start looking for
another job. There is no need to stick out to the end if something
better comes along.
Thank you, Dave. Something better coming along in a small town is
problematic. I got very lucky finding this job. Perfect hours, good
pay (NY wages), great manager. I'm not going to leave him in the lurch.
It won't be easy but start now. It may not be as fancy as what you
have now but in a small poll, there is also hope if you are known
outside your building. Start there.

At my my age? Most people don't want to hire a 64 year old woman.
They presume "oh, she'll be retiring soon" so they hire someone
younger, even if that means the younger person will move on and
they'll have to hire someone else in a year. They also don't have to
pay them well.
I've had to battle this several times. My skill area is one of those
that is flat out hard to find but adaptable as 'data analysis' always
is.
Post by Jill McQuown
I also can't see to drive in the dark or at dusk (no street lights)
so my work hours need to take that into consideration.
Cataracts? Get the surgery done if you can afford it (medicare will
take care of most of it. Medicare and Tricare takes care of all of it
but that's not an option for you. Employer insurance may cover as well
as Tricare though.

I was lucky to have a degree of job stability when working for the
government but that was not a sure thing. (Snip)
Same here at the end but my division was moved to Millington and I was
not going with them due to Don's medical needs. I found a new one on
my own as HR was tossing me all sorts of crap with 'save pay' at a
lower 'rank' (GS13 in a GS12 job and frozen from any grade raises). I
progressed as a GS13 2 more grade lebels before medical issues forced
me to retire at age 62.

Having contacts matters a LOT in this situation.

No, I don't have cataracts. It's called nyctalopia; have had it since I
was in my 40's. It means not being able to see in low light, dawn and
dusk. If there are abundant street lights, it's not a problem. No
street lights? That's the problem.

Yeah, you realize none of that has anything to do with my situation,
right? I am quite familiar with Millington Naval base since that's one
reason after my father retired from the Marines in 1973 at Parris
Island, SC he moved us to Memphis. So they would have access to medical
care at Millington. Not sure what the heck that has to do with my

Hospital in Port Royal, SC. It's got nothing to do with me looking for

Jill
I sincerely hope you eventually end up in the gutter - and then "enjoy"
a long and painful death from some ghastly cancer...

:-D

PS: why don't you call up Sheldon and ask for a job - as you did some
years ago...???

Widder Jill, maybe you could get a waitressing gig at "The Club" - if
you're "lucky" they might even provide you a free meal on your shift...

If you concentrate on *work* (however "menial"), that will take your
mind off of the "pity party" that you are currently holding for
yourself...!!!

Not good holiday news. It is possible he may end up selling?
In my 54 years of working, the first three companies were sold/moved and
the fourth I retired before it was sold.

Hopefully, you have enough time to find something as good or better
before it is gone.

Not good holiday news.  It is possible he may end up selling?
In my 54 years of working, the first three companies were sold/moved and
the fourth I retired before it was sold.
No, the owner (who lives in NY and most of the other employees are in
the NY area) is not interested in selling the business. This is a very
small company with under 30 employees. He's just done.

Were it not for the Covid-19 pandemic this job would not have
materialized. When it hit, employees started working remotely. My
manager and his wife owned a house down here which they had been renting
out. Long story short, he told the owner "I'll be working remotely from
SC." They moved to their house down here, then he rented a small office
and hired me as his assistant. That was 4 years ago.
Hopefully, you have enough time to find something as good or better
before it is gone.
I'll be looking. Since I knew this was coming I updated my resume
months ago. But this is such a small town, mostly touristy. I lucked
into this job. I will be asking other people who have office space in
the building because I know they all know people. And of course,
uploading my resume to Indeed, which is how my manager found me for this
job in the first place. We talked on the phone, met at the office then
walked to the Tex-Mex restaurant next door where he bought me lunch.
Asked me to send him my references but he pretty much hired me on the spot.

I'm not expecting a miracle like that again.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the opportunity. What's the business? Where
does the money come from? I mean, sure, he might be done. But I'm sure he'd
prefer to be done + X USD, if that is an opportunity, over just done.

Give me his number and I'll call him and ask. ;)

what might come your way in the several weeks. Keep your
eyes and ears open and also see what's available in the
building you're working in now.

Good luck and get well!!!

UGH! Girl, you have my sympathy, and I hope you have a bunch
of OTC meds there to help knock this out. Just vegetate the
next two days.

I still think it would be quite an adventure to try and buy the company
from the owner. Imagine... CEO Jill.. or perhaps the CFO becomes the CEO
and Jill the CFO?

Thank you! I still feel awful. Poor Cleo doesn't know what to make of
the sudden explosive sneezing. Or the fact that I don't really feel
like playing. I'll be asking the other people in the building.

Don't worry Jill. It's interesting to give them a little line once in a
while to see how many chime in and confirm their trolling before they
get filtered. Then we will see what user names pop in out of nowhere.

She was in her forties in that pic from the old mugshot page. A new

I'm sorry to hear that Jill. =( I hope you feel better soon, and when it
comes to the job, as long as we are all optimistic, sooner or later all
will be well!

Maybe it would be possible for the employees to come together and buy the
company from the owner? No one knows your customers as well as you
employees, and if it's between him just closing down, or selling it at a
low price to the employees, a few dollars should be better than no dollars
at all. So call your colleagues and maybe you can negotiate a deal? =)

Sounds like a possibly good plan. On the other hand, the employees could
be the reason the company is dying. Wouldn't be the first time it has
happened.

That's very depressing news. I'm so sorry. First, get well soon. My
daughter is very sick with similar symptoms now. Hopefully, she has
turned the corner, and so have you.
The job situation will resolve itself, one way or another. Just get
well and be well. Again, so sorry.

Thank you, Leo. I'm still not well. The last time I had a cold like
