Eggs and ethics

I never thought about this before, but should we eat eggs every day?
Should we share?

All of my life, eggs have been plentiful and cheap. I like eggs and
most days have two for breakfast. The bird flu has caused millions of
chickens to be destroyed, this eggs are in short supply. Of course,
supply and demand had driven up the price. I went to BJs and bought my
usual xtra lg eggs, two packs of 18. Been buying them like that for
many years. 36 eggs at a time. Not long ago, they were about $^, then
$8.50, then $12, and today, $18 or 50 cents an egg.

Sure, I can afford them, but should I keep up consumption or reduce? I
happen to like blueberry pancakes and when I make a batch, I get four
breakfasts from them. I have them every other day, thus cutting egg
consumption in half. Oh, I also bought enough blueberries to make two
batches. I'll make some Sunday.

Waffle House announced they are charging an extra 50 cents per egg until
prices go down.

I would imagine that breakfast is still pretty cheap because they still
want you to gamble. My guess is that eating might get you ready to
gamble but gambling might make you lose your appetite. That's just a
total guess on my part.

My dad and step-mom spent a lot of time in the Vegas casinos. I think
that gambling was a big pass-time for him.

The Flying Saucer in Niagara Falls ON had a 99 cent breakfast for years
and years. You got two eggs any style, white, brown, Italian or rye
toast and a pile of home fries. Bacon and coffee were extra. When I was
working we often stopped there for a coffee break breakfast.

It's nice that they are open 24/7, but the last several years in
particular, I've been disappointed with WH. They are a lot more
expensive now, but quality hasn't improved. Forget about their
waffles... If I'm hungry, I'll stop for hash brown, bacon, and eggs
with coffee.

My last waffle experience on the mainland was a positive. I loved the
bake-it-yourself waffles at the free breakfast at the hotel. Typically,
the free waffles at hotels have been dismal.

Unfortunately, the great waffles at the hotel prevented me from going to
the local breakfast spots. Next time, I won't get distracted like that
again. I love going to breakfast places on the mainland. You get out of
the cold, gloomy, morning and sit in a bright, heated, dining room with
pretty good coffee.

My favorite places would be up North where they do stuff like cutting
down giant trees and hunting deer so the breakfast plates there are
pretty hearty. My breakfasts down South have not been as wonderful.
Things seemed murky and dim and the water was so bad that it made the
coffee undrinkable.

Breakfast: it's the most important meal of the day.

We went to a pancake house this morning. My wife had pancakes, I had
Portuguese pickled pork. The vinegar is pretty intense - I don't know
what kind of vinegar they're using. I get vinha d'alhos whenever I go
there.

I love real maple syrup, although I really don't have a need for it. I
was gifted a bottle of it last year after my boss and his wife came back
from an Alaskan cruise. They got off the ship in Canada to fly home and
bought a few bottles to bring back. I guess I'll actually have to make
some waffles or perhaps my recipe for spice cake which calls for maple
frosting.

ordered waffles.  Very disappointing.  Given the name, I had high
expectations.
the other time was on a trip when I stopped for the night.  Short walk
from the motel the only benefit.

My last waffle experience on the mainland was a positive. I loved the
bake-it-yourself waffles at the free breakfast at the hotel. Typically,
the free waffles at hotels have been dismal.

But the syrup is shitty artificial maple.

Hotel waffles are so sweet that you can forgo the syrup. I was fine
with just butter on mine last time. I almost never bother, but I have a
nearly 100 year old waffle maker, and it does a much better job with
home made batter.

prices go down.

Avian flu might have something to do with it. People locally were
literally posting pics on Nextdoor showing empty shelves; absolutely NO

by the avian flu. They'll probably still be able to sell waffles since
they use a powdered mix and add milk or water to it.

Yeah I know. They did it before they can do it again. Personally I
prefer potatoes and hope that is chosen for more dishes. They were
doing a delightful potatoes au gratin but then they doused them with
greasy butter. Recipes, like alchemical experiments, are constantly
evolving! If you like this dish don't worry they'll ruin it in a week
or two.

Eggs are @ 2-3 servings in the food pyramid. Attach the real measure
2.5 to represent this. Then compare by product

2.5 X 78 cal. / egg * 1 egg / 50 cents = 3.9 value per penny

I suppose they could arrange for more fertilized eggs to start working
on new flocks but that might mean some farmers would have to house and
feed large numbers of birds is standby replacements for culled flocks.
They could end up not being able to sell them and there is also the
chance that their replacements might end up catching the virus.

Waffle House announced they are charging an extra 50 cents per egg
until prices go down.

Avian flu.  People locally were literally posting pics on Nextdoor
showing empty shelves where cartons of eggs would be.  There were
absolutely NO eggs for sale at one Publix and the same was reported at
Walmart last weekend.  And yes, Waffle House is charging a premium
because egg supply is affected.  They'll probably still be able to sell
waffles.  I think they use a powdered mix and add water to it.

While Avian flu has been around for a while it seems that outbreaks are
getting bigger and more frequent. When there are birds found with the
virus the whole flock is killed off. Maybe they should cut reduce the
the size of those chicken farms and make more smaller farms. That could
reduce the number of chickens that have to be killed off in an outbreak.

Then eggs would always be more expensive. Economies of scale favor
farms with a million (literally) chickens on them.

Normally you would expect that economy of scale to lead to lower prices.
That falls through the cracks when a small number of those birds come
down with Avian flue and you that to kill a million birds.

Large eggs were $4.99/dozen at the grocery store yesterday. Limit
two per customer. Huh. They're more expensive than that at Aldi.
My grocery must be using them as a loss leader.

Eggs are running about $4 here. Ours are more expensive. We pay $7 for

I used to have an Isuzu Rodeo that chickens would lay eggs by the
windshield. I don't like to keep chickens from doing their thing but it
messed up my driving the car. My theory is that the pattern on the
screen for the heater intake caused the chickens to lay their eggs on
it. I wish we still had that Rodeo. For one thing, we need the eggs.

I never thought about this before, but should we eat eggs every day?
Should we share?
All of my life, eggs have been plentiful and cheap.  I like eggs and
most days have two for breakfast.  The bird flu has caused millions of
chickens to be destroyed, this eggs are in short supply.  Of course,
supply and demand had driven up the price.  I went to BJs and bought
my usual xtra lg eggs, two packs of 18.  Been buying them like that
for many years.  36 eggs at a time.  Not long ago, they were about $^,
then $8.50, then $12, and today, $18 or 50 cents an egg.
Sure, I can afford them, but should I keep up consumption or reduce?

My wife eats many eggs. I don't eat breakfast, so I eat very few.
Reducing your egg input reduces the producer's incentive to sell them
to anybody.

Support your chicken rancher! Support _any_ food producer! They're our
only defense against starvation. I've heard that's bad. :(
