I never thought about this before, but should we eat eggs every day?
Should we share?

All of my life, eggs have been plentiful and cheap. I like eggs and
most days have two for breakfast. The bird flu has caused millions of
chickens to be destroyed, this eggs are in short supply. Of course,
supply and demand had driven up the price. I went to BJs and bought my
usual xtra lg eggs, two packs of 18. Been buying them like that for
many years. 36 eggs at a time. Not long ago, they were about $^, then
$8.50, then $12, and today, $18 or 50 cents an egg.

Sure, I can afford them, but should I keep up consumption or reduce? I
happen to like blueberry pancakes and when I make a batch, I get four
breakfasts from them. I have them every other day, thus cutting egg
consumption in half. Oh, I also bought enough blueberries to make two
batches. I'll make some Sunday.

Waffle House announced they are charging an extra 50 cents per egg until
prices go down.

Why would they charge 50 cents extra if an egg costs 50 cents in the
supermarket (and probably less for them)? It's not as if eggs were
free before this egg crisis.

Because they can. I've been to Waffle House twice. The first time I
ordered waffles. Very disappointing. Given the name, I had high
expectations.

the other time was on a trip when I stopped for the night. Short walk
from the motel the only benefit.

I guess I saved myself some disappointment by not stopping to eat at the
one we passed on a road trip. I can't say I am surprised. I think I have
posted here before about how disappointed pancakes have been at pancake
specialty restaurants. One should expect that when a restaurant
specializes in a particular type of food they should be good. They
could at least be mediocre. They should not be bad.

IHOP. They use outlandish toppings to disguise the mediocrity of

pancakes. Chocolate Chocolate-Chip pancakes. Mexican Tres Leches
Pancakes: layered with vanilla sauce and dulce de leche caramel
sauce and crowned with whipped topping.

Gack.

There *are* good pancake places. This place is near where gm lives.
http://www.walkerbros.net/
There are two of these in STL, https://ophmo.com/
The cornmeal buttermilk pancakes here are great.
https://southwestdinerstl.com/
Sure, IHOP and Waffle House suck. At IHOP, they have a $6 special, with
2 eggs, two slices ofbacon and a short stack(2). At Southwest Diner,
that would cost $14.50. At Original Pancake House, 2 eggs with 3 slices
of bacon and 3 pancakes is $16.25. Walker Bros. has 2 eggs, 4 slices of
bacon and 3 pancakes for $14.50. Both Walker Bros. and Southwest Diner
are known to have long lines to get in on weekends, often over an hour.

Back in the late Sixties, the Cal Neva in Reno had a forty-nine cent
breakfast special. You got two eggs, I had mine over easy, a choice of
ham, bacon or sausage, hash browns, and toast with jelly packs.
I haven't seen prices like that since. I think they wanted you to
gamble after breakfast.
As far as I remember, it was a good slice of ham or three slices of
bacon or three sausages.

I would imagine that breakfast is still pretty cheap because they still
want you to gamble. My guess is that eating might get you ready to
gamble but gambling might make you lose your appetite. That's just a
total guess on my part.

My dad and step-mom spent a lot of time in the Vegas casinos. I think
that gambling was a big pass-time for him.

The Flying Saucer in Niagara Falls ON had a 99 cent breakfast for years
and years. You got two eggs any style, white, brown, Italian or rye
toast and a pile of home fries. Bacon and coffee were extra. When I was
working we often stopped there for a coffee break breakfast.

Yeah, another example of pancake specialty places making horrible
pancakes and sausages. If they specialize in them you should be able to
expect them to be good, not horrible. They are cheap and easy to make,
and they certainly charge a lot. Any time I go to a breakfast place I
am stunned at the prices they charge for a couple pancakes.

Agreed. IHOP is a let's pretend all pancakes are dessert place. I don't
understand the appeal.

It's nice that they are open 24/7, but the last several years in
particular, I've been disappointed with WH. They are a lot more
expensive now, but quality hasn't improved. Forget about their
waffles... If I'm hungry, I'll stop for hash brown, bacon, and eggs
with coffee.

It's a bit like what supermarkets do. The moment someone on TV says
'inflation', supermarkets increase their prices.

My last waffle experience on the mainland was a positive. I loved the
bake-it-yourself waffles at the free breakfast at the hotel. Typically,
the free waffles at hotels have been dismal.

Unfortunately, the great waffles at the hotel prevented me from going to
the local breakfast spots. Next time, I won't get distracted like that
again. I love going to breakfast places on the mainland. You get out of
the cold, gloomy, morning and sit in a bright, heated, dining room with
pretty good coffee.

My favorite places would be up North where they do stuff like cutting
down giant trees and hunting deer so the breakfast plates there are
pretty hearty. My breakfasts down South have not been as wonderful.
Things seemed murky and dim and the water was so bad that it made the
coffee undrinkable.

Breakfast: it's the most important meal of the day.

It's the highest markup meal, though bird flu has lessened the difference.

But I don't care. I've got real maple. Big deal. I'd rather have coconut
syrup or any number of fruit syrups. The mainlanders' obsession with
real maple syrup is puzzling to me.

Some of us appreciate the natural flavor of the real syrup over
chemicals and crap. Do you keep Hexametaphosphate in the kitchen for
your cooking?

Log Cabin Syrup
Ingredients
Corn Syrup, Water, Sugar. Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Natural Flavor,
Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sodium Benzoate and Sorbic Acid
(Preservatives), Caramel Color, Phosphoric Acid, Mono and Diglycerides.

I took chem in college. I'm not intimidated by words with a lot of
letters. I wrote "It's better dying though chemistry" in regards to
fentanyl.

I never said you were special, I wrote "You think you're oh so very
special, don't you?" There's a difference. The truth is that I'm not
particularly concerned with whether you think you're special or not. I
got my own life to live.

fentanyl.
I never said you were special, I wrote "You think you're oh so very
special, don't you?" There's a difference. The truth is that I'm not
particularly concerned with whether you think you're special or not. I
got my own life to live.
I sure think yoose special, Uncle Tojo!

Some of us appreciate the natural flavor of the real syrup over
chemicals and crap. Do you keep Hexametaphosphate in the kitchen for
your cooking?
Log Cabin Syrup
Ingredients
Corn Syrup, Water, Sugar. Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Natural Flavor,
Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sodium Benzoate and Sorbic Acid
(Preservatives), Caramel Color, Phosphoric Acid, Mono and Diglycerides.
So you like real maple syrup. What's that got to do with me? Not a
thing. You think you're oh so very special, don't you? Well okay, then.
Damn, he's not even an asian or hiwaiian. How dare that sorry bastard?

Real maple syrup is really good. The artificially flavoured and/or
adulterated stuff maybe be good enough for those who are have never had
the real McCoy. Once you have had real maple syrup it is hard to settle
for less.

I've had real maple syrup. There's a bottle of the stuff in my cupboard.
I can use it anytime I want but I haven't. I like strawberry jam with
pancakes. I'm a rebel... a loner.

We went to a pancake house this morning. My wife had pancakes, I had
Portuguese pickled pork. The vinegar is pretty intense - I don't know
what kind of vinegar they're using. I get vinha d'alhos whenever I go
there.

Maple syrup isn't part of Hawaiian culture. It's also not Asian. Of
course you don't use it. It's not speshial!

I love real maple syrup, although I really don't have a need for it. I
was gifted a bottle of it last year after my boss and his wife came back
from an Alaskan cruise. They got off the ship in Canada to fly home and
bought a few bottles to bring back. I guess I'll actually have to make
some waffles or perhaps my recipe for spice cake which calls for maple
frosting.

I'm a Best Foods guy (Hellman's, east of the Mississippi). Add sugar for
Miracle Whip. Yuck!

I really ought to get to bed. I haven't been up this late for a while.
I'm taping the Super Bowl for the commercials. We're having ham wraps,
roasted chicken wings and Chung's Egg Rolls, because tradition dictates
that we do something odd today.

Because they can.  I've been to Waffle House twice.  The first time I
ordered waffles.  Very disappointing.  Given the name, I had high
expectations.
the other time was on a trip when I stopped for the night.  Short walk
from the motel the only benefit.
My last waffle experience on the mainland was a positive. I loved the
bake-it-yourself waffles at the free breakfast at the hotel. Typically,
the free waffles at hotels have been dismal.
But the syrup is shitty artificial maple.
Hotel waffles are so sweet that you can forgo the syrup. I was fine
with just butter on mine last time. I almost never bother, but I have a
nearly 100 year old waffle maker, and it does a much better job with
home made batter.

Avian flu might have something to do with it. People locally were
literally posting pics on Nextdoor showing empty shelves; absolutely NO
eggs for sale at Publix and the same reported at Walmart last week. And
yes, Waffle House is charging a premium because egg supply is affected
by the avian flu. They'll probably still be able to sell waffles since
they use a powdered mix and add milk or water to it.

Yeah I know. They did it before they can do it again. Personally I
prefer potatoes and hope that is chosen for more dishes. They were
doing a delightful potatoes au gratin but then they doused them with
greasy butter. Recipes, like alchemical experiments, are constantly
evolving! If you like this dish don't worry they'll ruin it in a week
or two.

I don't work in the kitchen, but I would do something like

Eggs are @ 2-3 servings in the food pyramid. Attach the real measure
2.5 to represent this. Then compare by product

2.5 X 78 cal. / egg * 1 egg / 50 cents = 3.9 value per penny

Compare potatoes.

What did they do before and who are they?
They measured the cost effectiveness and decided to bank in eggs. The
people who decide what ingredients the kitchen is to receive.

Yeah I know.
But how do you measure it?
Dollars per gram of protein?

Figures are approximate:

Egg: $0.5/6 = 1.08
Chicken: $3.29/82 = 0.04
Ground beef: $6/65 = 0.09
Pork: $6/123 = 0.05
Tofu: $2.79/31.5 = 0.09
Dry beans: $1.19/91 = 0.01

Avian flu. People locally were literally posting pics on Nextdoor
showing empty shelves where cartons of eggs would be. There were
absolutely NO eggs for sale at one Publix and the same was reported at
Walmart last weekend. And yes, Waffle House is charging a premium
because egg supply is affected. They'll probably still be able to sell
waffles. I think they use a powdered mix and add water to it.

While Avian flu has been around for a while it seems that outbreaks are
getting bigger and more frequent. When there are birds found with the
virus the whole flock is killed off. Maybe they should cut reduce the
the size of those chicken farms and make more smaller farms. That could
reduce the number of chickens that have to be killed off in an outbreak.

I suppose they could arrange for more fertilized eggs to start working
on new flocks but that might mean some farmers would have to house and
feed large numbers of birds is standby replacements for culled flocks.
They could end up not being able to sell them and there is also the
chance that their replacements might end up catching the virus.

Then eggs would always be more expensive. Economies of scale favor
farms with a million (literally) chickens on them.

Of course, people who complain about spending a buck on two eggs
will spend around $7 on a Big Mac.

Large eggs were $4.99/dozen at the grocery store yesterday. Limit
two per customer. Huh. They're more expensive than that at Aldi.
My grocery must be using them as a loss leader.

Waffle House announced they are charging an extra 50 cents per egg
until prices go down.
Then eggs would always be more expensive. Economies of scale favor
farms with a million (literally) chickens on them.
Of course, people who complain about spending a buck on two eggs
will spend around $7 on a Big Mac.
The Big Mac is the shittiest sandwich McD's offers. A big Mac is
exactly the same as a McDouble, but with an extra middle bun, a penny or
two worth of lettuce, and puke sauce instead of ketchup and mustard.
Look at this special.
https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/meal/5-dollar-mcdouble-meal.html A
Big Mac alone is almost $5. Some folks must really prize that vomit sauce.

My wife buys large eggs exclusively for baking. Other than that, we
always buy jumbos. They are less expensive per weight.

Normally you would expect that economy of scale to lead to lower prices.
That falls through the cracks when a small number of those birds come
down with Avian flue and you that to kill a million birds.

Eggs are running about $4 here. Ours are more expensive. We pay $7 for
our neighbour's free range. She thinks they are worth it.

A few days ago, I bought dinner at McDonalds for the first time in
several months. I bought 1 Big Mac, 1 Quarter Pounder with Cheese,
1 Filet 'O Fish, 2 medium orders of fries and 2 medium mango-pineapple
smoothies. It cost me over thirty-seven bucks.
That's pretty expensive for two meals. I don't think that I can afford
to eat out anymore. Home cookin' rulz!

That's pretty expensive for two meals of utter crap. I'm happy
to pay for real food.

We went to our local Turkish restaurant a few days ago. It was
about $25/plate for lunch. He had a sort of lamb ragu over
roasted eggplant puree. I had cauliflower and lamb stew. Each
came with soup or salad and a choice of rice and orzo pilaf,
bulgur pilaf (vegan) or rice pilaf (gluten free).

37?!?! I think I paid 6 or 7 EUR for 1 double cheese burger and 1

I'm paying (per large free-range British egg) 26p UK

Sure, I can afford them, but should I keep up
consumption or reduce?

Your imported/exported egg trade is chiefly with
Canada, EU, UK and China.

There will be new tariffs on those markets so the
price of eggs is going to get more expensive.

Better eat more American eggs to support your US
producers.

We Americans live in an imaginary world. While that's not true, some
aspects are like a bad dream. Today we're having lunch at our favorite
restaurant. It'll probably be one of the ones that are closing for a
week in solidarity with the undocumented folks who are being rounded up.
I told my wife that if the jack-booted immigration thugs show up, that
I'm going to point and say, "Look everybody! Nazis!" Then ask them,
"How does it feel to be evil?" Heck, the pricks couldn't do anything to
me because *Soy ciudadano Americano*.

Why would the eggs be more expensive with tariff's? Trump has his
supporters convinced that the countries facing tariffs will be paying
off their national debt.

Fortunately, at least for a little while longer, I get eggs for free

They can be if some infected bird flies over and craps in your
manager's yard. Still, the odds are small.
Fool, no bird flying over the kingdom of Dataw would dare shit.

They instinctively hold their bowels until they exit the kingdom.

Fortunately, at least for a little while longer, I get eggs for free
from my managers' wife who has about 8 laying hens.  They are not likely
to be exposed to avian flu.

How nice for your Majesty. Thanks for letting us know!

I'm paying (per large free-range British egg) 26p UK
=32c US

Sure, I can afford them, but should I keep up
consumption or reduce?
Your imported/exported egg trade is chiefly with
Canada, EU, UK and China.
There will be new tariffs on those markets so the
price of eggs is going to get more expensive.
Better eat more American eggs to support your US
producers.

I used to have an Isuzu Rodeo that chickens would lay eggs by the
windshield. I don't like to keep chickens from doing their thing but it
messed up my driving the car. My theory is that the pattern on the
screen for the heater intake caused the chickens to lay their eggs on
it. I wish we still had that Rodeo. For one thing, we need the eggs.

Amazing! Talk about value add to the car. Every morning, with your Isuzu
Rodeo, get fresh eggs! It's a shame you don't have it any longer. =(

I wonder why chickens endorse Isuzu? You should try with different brands
until you find the right one. ;)

Just remember, it was obama and biden that made your eggs so expensive.

Be patient, and within days, trump will issue an order that will make
eggs free!

ALL it takes is an Executive Order from President Trump, and then he'll
have THE ELON go in and "clean the hen house"...

Because they supported those trans hens. If you were hatched a rooster,
then you should be a rooster, and you have no business using the
facilities of the hens!

No Hank, they will be more expensive, but they will be totally worth it
because they will be Trump brand eggs. It will be totally worth it.
You can buy them with Trump Coin, and show your love and loyalty to Il
Douche'.

My wife eats many eggs. I don't eat breakfast, so I eat very few.
Reducing your egg input reduces the producer's incentive to sell them
to anybody.

Support your chicken rancher! Support _any_ food producer! They're our
only defense against starvation. I've heard that's bad. :(
