OT: Winter Storm Alert 1/21/2025

It's been a while since this kind of Winter weather has hit this the
part of South Carolina. The outside temp was already 32°F when I got
home and the low tonight is expected to be 27°F. That means it will
likely be freezing rain/sleet with some snow. If predictions hold true,
tomorrow morning the streets will be covered in ice. They have changed
the predictions from 1-3 inches to 3-5 inches of snow overnight.
They'll close the bridges to anything but emergency (ambulance, fire
trucks and police) vehicles.
It's not gotten over 24°F (-4.44°C) all day here and tonight
it's predicted to be 7°F (-13.88°C). Windchill is expected
to be -5°F (-20.55°C). BRRRRRRRR
I had to stop at the hardware store after work to get a garage door
remote battery. It was already starting to spit rain. There was a sign
on the door saying they'd be closing at 5PM rather than the usual 9PM
and closed tomorrow. I saw people in there getting grill propane tanks
refilled. (I already have bags of lump charcoal for the grill if
needed). Some people were picking up bundles of firewood and Duraflame
type fire logs. I'm sure at other stores people were last minute
stocking up on toilet paper, etc.
Loading Image...
Upon arriving home I set the outside faucets to run enough to hopefully
keep the water flowing through the pipes. If we get this Winter storm,
it will be interesting. It's a rare occurrence.
OB Food: I'll have some leftover corned beef & cabbage for dinner
tonight.
Jill
I'd seen on the news about the snow in Houston, New Orleans,
and the panhandle of Florida. We've got a cold front with
wind keeping that snow well south of Tennessee or we'd be
in the same snowy deepfreeze. As cold as it's been all week
I'm not planning on getting out of the house until Friday
for weekly grocery shopping.

Good timing for your post. I was just watching the news and wondered
how you were going to make out. Northern FL has a few inches

When I lived in CT, it is just another day and they have the equipment
to take care of it. Best thing people in the areas that never had snow,
stay home.

Two of my northern friends texted me this morning, Joan in PA said -2F,
Sue in MA said -4F I get no sympathy from then when it was 48 this
morning.

Starting Sunday, back to low 70s.

I redeemed myself and made a good grilled cheese tonight.

Love a good grilled cheese sandwich!  Are you expecting any Winter
weather?  I'm hearing a lot of sleet right now which does not bode well.
Tomorrow will be a mess.  Smart people will not be driving anywhere.
I am still urging people to try cooking grilled cheese sandwiches in an
air fryer.

It takes about the same time in a skillet on the stove top. I don't
butter the bread first. I heat some neutral oil with butter in a
skillet until hot, add the cheese sandwich and cook until golden
brown on one side, flip with a wide spatula and finish. Different
cooking methods. If I buttered the bread first I'd probably try this
using my little air fryer.
Jill
I think I'd rather use a skillet for easier cleanup. The bottom of my
AF is almost certain to be different and if any cheese dripped, it
might not be that easy to clean off. No time savings. BRW, Ed was
joking (pretty sure).

It's not about the cleanup. It's about how nicely the grilled cheese
sandwich turns out in the air fryer.

No, the second one I made I used the AF. I put a thin coating of mayo
on the bread and once the top is toasted, flip it for a few more minutes.

I was quite pleased with the results. Some cheese did leak, but after
the AF cooled a but i took it out and ate it. Fried cheese is very good.

Your husband doesn't have an air fryer???
No. I suppose he could carefully use his oxyacetylene torch.
Naturally with the largest size rosebud tip?

Or maybe just use a large cutting torch but don't hit the oxygen lever?

I have a wonderful air fryer, gifted to us. I'm still not sure what it
is or how to use it. Old dog...
I think the people who gifted it to us were Old dog..., too.
It's kind of like being gifted a complete acetylene torch outfit.
Um...thanks?

Nothing like you will be getting.  Low 39, high 53 for the next four days.
Driving in snow takes some practice and caution.  No matter how good you
are, ice can still wipe you out.
This is why I didn't drive anywhere this morning:

https://ibb.co/7yDDKkJ

It's only supposed to get up to 33°F today. The sun came out. Just
enough to make surfaces and roadways slushy. When the temps drop back
to the 20's tonight it will all freeze again.

Once, when I was a young man, I watched two girls slide right past me,
looking straight at me through their front windshield as their car
rotated, on Hwy 40. They slid to a stop. Nobody and no equipment were
harmed. I think all of us learned a snow/ice lesson.
Hwy 40 is now Interstate 80, only bigger.

It has been about 10F all day here. I went out to run some errands. My
last stop was the produce store in town. A strange thing happened.  I
was only in there for about 10 minutes and while I was in there it has
started to snow quite hard. When I came back out I was surprised to
find my windshield covered in snow. I tried to clear it off the wipers
but it was frozen on. I had to get out and scrape it.
You should be used to that by now.
I have been putting up with it every winter of every year of my life. I
can't say that I like it. That being said, as I walked across the
parking lot at Walmart this morning I didn't feel the need to zip up my
parka.
I saw people in there getting grill propane tanks refilled.  (I
already have bags of lump charcoal for the grill if needed).  Some

Gotta have the toilet paper. What's with people these days? Don't they
normally have a supply of toiler paper? It seems like every time there
is a minor glitch in the weather everyone has to run out and get an
Armageddon supply of toilet paper.
I don't understand not having a stock of toilet paper or basic supplies
whatever even when you don't have storms predicted.
I only buy it every few month... in bulk.
We had leftover  beef stew. It had been made last week and we froze
the leftovers.  It was even better tonight that it was the night we
had it last week.
The storm has moved in here and I'm hearing and seeing freezing rain
pelting down on the patio.  Nope, I won't be going anywhere tomorrow.
That stuff is pain in the put. We usually get rain or snow and skip the
freezing rain stage.

I always try to have basic things in stock.
When Scotland went into lockdown in March 2020, I was _very_ glad to
have a stock of TP and pantry staples, as well as a full freezer.
I was also glad that I had learned how to bake - I generally have a
large stock of various flours on hand, as well as yeast and baking powder.

Yup. A non-issue in Canada. I'm not sure Dave really gets how
different this type of snow event is here. Don's Doctor's office is
closed but a reptionist got in at 10am and is trying to reschedue
folks. We have a preliminary in March but priority for any
cancelations because he was last seen 7 months ago and all since got
cancelled. He's supposed to be quarterly.

We show 4 inches on the driveway which seems the average around me?

Today, all is frozen solid. High today is 26F. Hit just cold enough to
block my solar (they are slightly warmer when collecting but others
with NextDoor say it's because it all hit at night when they quell to a
trickle feed. The big commercial solar units aren't affected. I guess
they have internal heaters of some sort?

It's the first time snow covered them for me. We see some meltoff
though so may get some free electricity later today. I just checked,
getting ,9 kwh on live status. Below normal but, hey, it's something
at least.

Friday we warm up. Saturday I'll get the few things we need at the
grocery as it's too messy out there to try for the store.

It was 10°F when I went to bed but expected low was
5°F. 🥶 We've now climbed to 33°.
I'm still waiting for the mythical 26F they promised but looks like it

The low was almost -10 F yesterday early AM in Ohio, some areas got
cold. It was well below -20 with windchill! Surprisingly, my 36 year
old car started for work without terrible trouble, and streets are all
clear. Unfortunately, the drafts in my house are rather evident in this
weather, but it's already warmed up to 15 above F this morning.

And it just started snowing again. All channels predicted no more
snow... Pretty thick big fat fluffy flakes...
116F here yesterday.
Well, if you got snow overnight it would be gone fast!
I've only seen temperature that high once, passing through Arizona years
ago, it was 120.
It is 45F here, normal would be 70.
There's a heat wave going on here. It always gets hot in summer, but
this is extreme. 45F must be very chilly for Floridians.

block my solar (they are slightly warmer when collecting but others
with NextDoor say it's because it all hit at night when they quell to a
trickle feed.
Which is why I have no interest in solar. I don't want to have
to go out and remove a foot of snow from the collectors.
Not to worry. trump will have all that new solar shit torn down before
the end of the year. And those damn windmills too.
Damn STRAIGHT...

And THE DONALD is saving the whales by tearing down all of those pesky
off - shore "wind farms"...

On Joe Rogan, he said that he'd like to be a "whale psychologist"...!!!

I'd consider it if I was younger but the payback is too long at my age.

Our electric company has a lot of solar farms. They have a program and
I pay $27 a month for a portion of my use. Depending on the amount of
solar generated, I get a rebate depending on amount generated. This
time of year I lose a few bucks, in summer with long days I save quite a
bit. At the end of the year, I save enough for a pizza and beer.

They'll
close the bridges to anything but emergency (ambulance, fire trucks and
police) vehicles.
Upon arriving home I set the outside faucets to run enough to hopefully
keep the water flowing through the pipes.  If we get this Winter storm,
it will be interesting.  It's a rare occurrence.
OB Food: I'll have some leftover corned beef & cabbage for dinner tonight.
Jill
Yeah, I'm having leftovers too, your Majesty. And I'm dining alone, same
as your Highness.

Maybe John will come back some day.

They are still flipping about. 9F-20F is us for the next 4 days it
seems. Snow ranges from 1-7 inches depending on site used. No melt
off soon.
It's sticking to the steets. Something shifted fast to hit us. We were
out of the path yesterday. No time to prep any roads or driveways here.
Ah well, we are well stocked and if the electric holds, we'll be fine.
If electric drops, keeping Don's air machine working will be
interesting.
I imagine that is pretty cold for you guys. Seven inches of snow will be
challenge if you aren't used to it. That's typical January and
February for us, and sometimes November, December and March as well.

Yes and the biggest part os the one you can't really concieve of
probably. No snow clearing gear. It's very common to ignore or vastly
underestimate the impact of that.
Don says at 8am the news tracked 83 accidents already? No fatalities
that I have heard of yet. Probably most are fender-benders.
Damn, I bet there were thousands of rickshaw accidents in Sasebo!!

None at all? Well, I guess if you don't get much snow and don't have
much call for snow removal you might just as well throw in the towel.
Nothing compared to folks up north. We get the stuff funded for the
interstates. I-64, I-664, I-264, and I think I-464 got approved? The
3 digit ones are all beltways linked off I-64. They span various parts
of the 5 cities 'southside' of the Cheasapeake River. (there's 4 more
north of it or 6 depending on where you stop calling it Hampton roads.
Most leave off Yorktown and Williamsberg.)

What we have has to be used on interstates first then the city gets to
'borrow them' for an attempt at other major roads. People don't live
on major roads with rare exceptions (maybe 1 in 1,000 live right by
one). All interstates are offramps to those mjor roads. It's hard to
explain. Roughly 1M live in 'southside' and you can see on a map that
it sprawls all over the place.

I'd say the average person here has to travel 7-10miles on untreated
roadways to get to work. I planned better and can get to 2 7-11 type
places on foot and once I get to Lynnhaven road, I can get to groceries
but not my normal store.

Basically, wait for melt off. I'm also lucky but for a bad reason.
Rosemont gets earlier service bur because one side is gas stations and
the other, homes with very short front lawns. 3 of the houses have had
big cars crash into them and there was a narrow miss where someone
almost took out 8 gas pumps. Not all in one year of course. It's a 1
mile strip from I-264 to Holland and probaby 250,000 transit that so
pretty major.

Anyways, it's a lot different and add lack of experience, it's best to
stay home if you can.

It has been about 10F all day here. I went out to run some errands. My
last stop was the produce store in town. A strange thing happened. I
was only in there for about 10 minutes and while I was in there it has
started to snow quite hard. When I came back out I was surprised to find
my windshield covered in snow. I tried to clear it off the wipers but it
was frozen on. I had to get out and scrape it.

Gotta have the toilet paper. What's with people these days? Don't they
normally have a supply of toiler paper? It seems like every time there
is a minor glitch in the weather everyone has to run out and get an
Armageddon supply of toilet paper.
OB Food: I'll have some leftover corned beef & cabbage for dinner tonight.
We had leftover beef stew. It had been made last week and we froze the
leftovers. It was even better tonight that it was the night we had it
last week.

I'm hearing and seeing sleet/freezing rain when I look out back so I

I checked out Beaufort/Dataw links before posting. Congratulations! You
have more snow than my specific area of Reno/Sparks, so far, this season.
I'm pretty sure that it doesn't happen very often.
