"The term "German chocolate cake" is actually American in origin and
is named after an American chocolatier named Samuel German."

If there's nothing German about the cake, then why does the recipe say
to add German chocolate?

Exactly. Seems German enough to me.

What are some good German Chocolates though? I do not have much

I lived 15 kms from the German border for 45 years and never thought
"Let's go to Germany and get some of their chocolate". Chocolate from
Belgium, yes. Beer from Germany, yes. But chocolate from Germany?

IOW, you haven't tried it.

In this group, if posters offer a recipe it's expected
to be one they have tried and tested, recommend and know
to be good.

This is considered common courtesy in a food and
cooking group.

I thought the Cooking group was for recipes whether they are copied
and pasted or tried and true.
This one looked tasty to me and will
eventually bake it.
IOW, you haven't tried it.
In this group, if posters offer a recipe it's expected
to be one they have tried and tested, recommend and know
to be good.
This is considered common courtesy in a food and
cooking group.

So, we can't post pics of stuff like humming birds or wildlife in our
backyard?

And no banter about shit where we work, or anything other than pure food
recipes?

No crap about where we've lived, army or navy shit or anything else not
grub related?

I think you are the only person that has ever followed these rules

When someone posts a hummingbird recipe, and we find out

take action.

Those are generally marked O.T. but no griping about food

What is click-bate about it? There is a full recipe in her posts. Did
Chunk Mummy show up to your lean-to Jill and make you click the link or
are you just so miserable in your existence that you feel the need to
complain about everything? I bet your cats even hate you, don't they Jill?

As far as I know, the only reason anyone would want to click their links
is to either see the picture or attachment or the original post that
Chunky is responding to. Remember not all NNTP servers have long
retention periods.

I know several of us have posted links to photos or articles
accompanying our posts since this group doesn't support binaries. As
far as I see it, that is no different except the JLA links that I see
going back nearly two decades appear not to be suffering from link rot.
Not as much can be said about many image hosting services or other
various sites we have all linked to in the past.

So, I assume you received your share of the $50 million dollars that

So that would be about $10.00 for each of our posts.

DejaNews revolutionized the nature of Usenet. First, it offered a Web-based view of Usenet. Although Web browsers dating back to Mosaic include the ability to read and post on Usenet, many users never explored those features. DejaNews' Web interface exposed Usenet to millions of Web users; in fact, many new users thought that DejaNews was Usenet.
Furthermore, prior to DejaNews, most participants in Usenet discussions thought of their postings as ephemeral. The thousands of distributed Usenet News servers at universities, ISPs, and companies usually archived newsgroup material for no longer than a week or two. Over time, DejaNews built an archive of Usenet postings that lent a sense of permanence.
Equally important, DejaNews provided a searchable index of Usenet. The index made it possible to find which newsgroups carried current discussions on which topics. Someone researching a topic such as digital cameras would search DejaNews first, find newsgroups with current discussions on the topic, and then post questions or comments.

Dejanews did not have click-bait
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Groups
The Deja News Research Service was an archive of messages posted to
Usenet discussion groups, started in March 1995 by Steve Madere in
Austin, Texas. Its search engine capabilities won the service acclaim,
generated controversy, and significantly changed the perceived nature of
online discussion. This archive was acquired by Google in 2001.

While archives of Usenet discussions had been kept for as long as the
medium existed, Deja News offered a novel combination of features. It
was available to the general public, provided a simple World Wide Web
user interface, allowed searches across all archived newsgroups,
returned immediate results, and retained messages indefinitely. The
search facilities transformed Usenet from a loosely organized and
ephemeral communication tool into a valued information repository. The
archive's relative permanence, combined with the ability to search
messages by author, raised concerns about privacy and confirmed
often-repeated past admonishments that posters should be cautious in
discussing themselves and others.

While Madere was initially reluctant to remove archived material,
protests from users and legal pressure led to the introduction of
"nuking", a method for posters to permanently remove their own messages
from search results. It already supported the use of an "X-No-Archive"
message header, which if present would cause an article to be omitted
from the archive. This did not prevent others from quoting the material
in a later message and causing it to be stored. Copyright holders were
also allowed to have material removed from the archive. According to
Humphrey Marr of Deja News, copyright actions most frequently came from
the Church of Scientology.

The capability to "nuke" postings was kept open for many years but later
removed without explanation under Google's tenure. Google also
mistakenly restored previously "nuked" messages at one point, angering
many users. "Nukes" that were in effect at the time when Google removed
the possibility are still honored, however.....

The service was eventually expanded beyond search. "My Deja News"
offered the ability to read Usenet in the traditional chronological,
per-group manner, and to post new messages to the network. Deja
Communities were private Internet forums offered primarily to
businesses. In 1999 the site (now known as Deja.com) made its primary
feature a shopping comparison service. During this transition, which
involved relocation of the servers, many older messages in the Usenet
archive became unavailable. By late 2000 the company, in financial
distress, sold the shopping service to eBay, who incorporated the
technology into their half.com services.

My understanding at looking at the JLA links that go back a couple of
decades, they either point to the original post that a person is
replying to there. Obviously since not all news servers have long
retention periods and in those cases someone today or 20 years from now
would be able to see the OP if by chance it wasn't quoted or those posts
are no longer available in their newsreader cache??? There also seems
to be a link posted when there is a photo or something else attached to
the post. Probably because this group is not for binaries. Curious,
when a post starts there and there is no photo or something else
attached, no link seems to be posted. I am basing this off of the links
that I looked at in this group, rec.food.baking, alt.checkmate and
alt.arts.poetry.comments among others

They seem to indicate that the group Chunky posts from is
rec.food.cooking as I saw posted here:
http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=648550211

and they posted the unaltered rec.food.cooking group FAQs:

No nitwit, we'd much prefer you posted something you've
actually made and can testify to its' taste and perhaps
difficultly in making.  Any half-brain can copy and post
an untried recipe and claim it "looked tasty to me."
Not to mention the link to jlaforums, which is a click-bait
advertising site.
Jill
Must be something different in our setups? I get no 'click bait'
when I click on the link. Am I not looking at it right?
My understanding at looking at the JLA links that go back a couple of
decades, they either point to the original post that a person is
replying to there. Obviously since not all news servers have long
retention periods and in those cases someone today or 20 years from
now would be able to see the OP if by chance it wasn't quoted or
those posts are no longer available in their newsreader cache???

We post links to pictures all the time here. David out in Hawaii loves
to post endless youtube links (I just skip them as they waste time).

The RFC autopost from Vic has been there forever. Vic used to be a
member but is probably dead. No one 'owns' RFC to make statements
about it.

Let me guess, you thought Google Groups was stealing Usenet content and
reposting it too? What about NovaBBS or any of the other web based

Who ever claimed it was?

Were you one of these people back in your WebTV days (you might have
been what, in your 50s or 60s back in the 1990s) that though Dejanews
was Usenet. I bet you've lived the past 30 years with your bloomers in
a wad over your ignorance? Is this why you've carried on in such a
bitter manner here all of these years?

DejaNews revolutionized the nature of Usenet. First, it offered a Web-based view of Usenet. Although Web browsers dating back to Mosaic include the ability to read and post on Usenet, many users never explored those features. DejaNews' Web interface exposed Usenet to millions of Web users; in fact, many new users thought that DejaNews was Usenet.

No onr but you need to be specific. Your own comments wander back and
forth with 'here' and 'there' but not defining them. No wonder it
causes confusion.'

RFC is USENET. DEJANEWS, GOOGLEGROUPS, ILA and even Fidonet (which
people here mistakenly call NOVABBS) are all seconday providers with
their own TOAs and style.

Me, I don't really care where a person accesses us. GG (gone now) and
ILA (recent for me to see) are just reaching in and returning comments.

I don't like the actual ILA interface to read but others I suppose, do.

Big whoop. Fidonet had it too back in the late 80's or early 90's.
Some idiot turned my bbs address as linked to every disability usenet
group and was force feeding the comments one by one to my netmail
directory completely downing my system. It took 2 weeks to get it shut
off. I didn't sign up for it and could not make sense of the
directions to turn it off. My feed was mad at ME over the traffic!
His system was mostly down from it all. DEC89-Feb90, it was someplace
there.
