Dinner Plans for Tuesday? 1/14/2025

What's your dinner plans for this almost mid-January Tuesday?
Cleaning up leftovers from the weekend or heading out to a
favorite restaurant?

It's going to be chicken and dressing here with mashed potatoes
and yet to be determined green vegetable. Cranberry sauce, too!
Chicken came out of the freezer Monday morning and it's almost
thawed but will be easy to cube. Cornbread was made last night
and ready to be crumbled, seasoned, and then turned into dressing.

This meal will be shared with a neighbor.

I was supposed to go next door to my son's house for dinner. Turns out,
his wife is not feeling well so he called about an hour ago and is
bringing pizza for the two of us.

Still have to decide, red wine or beer.

ended up with a nice wine from Portugal.

Yep. When I tried wine, in my Twenties, I preferred Mogen David. ISTR
it tasted like Welch's grape juice with a minor kick. I tried
Amontillado once because of Poe. Am I a wine guy, or what?

The one I liked was a simple table wine. Nothing fantastic, the sort
that you'd have to sip along with lunch or dinner. Think similar to
the 'Barefoot' lines from down under.

Gallo was a cut below it. I don't think I ever tasted Mogen David.
I'm not much into wine very often and when I am, simple decent but
fairly inexpensive suit me best.

Have you ever had Welsh's Grape Juice? If yes, you've tasted Mogen
David. Very little difference.

When we were kids, we'd sometimes have a tiny bit of it on holidays.
Sweet wines can be OK to sip, but not well paired with a meal.

I can't tell the difference between a good $10 to $15 bottle vs a $50
bottle so I stick with the lower range. Even some of the boxed stuff is
decent. Black Box and Bota Box are OK.

I like wine with dinner so I always have quite a selection on hand. My
wine cooler holds 30 bottles.

Nope, to make a similar drink to mogen david NY jew wine, here's the recipe:

Welch's grape juice
Vodka or everclear grain alcohol.
1/4 cup kerosene, Xylene or lacquer thinner.

Stir to mix well. Chill and serve in fancy glasses.

I buy Black Box for cooking. They've got those little 500-ml tetra
packs, which is usually enough for a recipe and maybe a snort for
myself.

I'm sure I have. Sounds like the wine is overly sweet then for me. I
don't like dry or markedly sweet.

I'm in your zone I think. My prices are based on the Exchange
liquor-locker (much cheaper) so nominally 6.99-9.99 is where I fit
mostly. Since I open a bottle a year probably, my wine rack is a
simple pretty wood one on the bar.

Naw. I think my rack holds 12 and I have 3 more on the side for
cooking (reds as I don't drink them but some recipes call for them like
beef stews).

While the original Barefoot Wine brand originated in California, USA,
the brand has expanded internationally.

Australian Production: Some Barefoot wines are now produced in
Australia specifically for the Australian market.

So, while the core of the brand is American, you can find some
variations produced in other countries like Australia.

Dry white wine is good, sparkling wine is good. Grape juice works. But red
wine... no, not a chance.

Strange how it affects different people so differently.

Reds I only use for cooking. Jusy not into drinking them. Rose's are
different and I like them quite well.

If you look at my recipes, with the exception of mirin at times and
rare uses of a little saki or plum wine, I'm obviously not a 'cooking
with wine' person.

Everything does not need to have wine in it. This is the truth. The last
time I had wine in something was when we did the stew with meat and
barley. The wine was too sweet though, so next time we make it, it will be
a dry red wine. Red wine for cooking is the exception though, there I can
tolerated it, since I assume all the poison boils away. =)

There ya go. Just good enough for cooking.

I make a big pot in my large crockpot and others bring sides and stuff.
They show up with freezer containers and pack away lunches to take

it tasted like Welch's grape juice with a minor kick. I tried
Amontillado once because of Poe. Am I a wine guy, or what?
The one I liked was a simple table wine. Nothing fantastic, the sort
that you'd have to sip along with lunch or dinner. Think similar to
the 'Barefoot' lines from down under.
I've never heard of Barefoot wines. Reason being that they're from
California.

Turns
out, his wife is not feeling well so he called about an hour ago and
is bringing pizza for the two of us.
Still have to decide, red wine or beer.
BEER! Gotta be beer. Call and ask what's his favorite plonk? Run up
to 7-11 if you don't have it?

Just hope it's not Strohs as your reputation will be ruined if seen
with it (snikker).

Why beer? Red wine is always a favorite in Italy.

Why Stroh's in particular? There are plenty of lousy American beers.

As a daughter of Detroit, I was raised on Vernor's ginger ale and
Stroh's (just a sip from my grandfather's beer until I was old
enough to have my own). I got a six-pack of Stroh's for my 18th
birthday, which was the legal drinking age at the time.

Back in the Dark Ages (1970s), Stroh's made a very acceptable bock
beer every late winter. I used to look forward to it very much.

This could indeed be the truth! They are so tasty that they are frequently
used as bait for animals. Open one, wait 10 meters away or so, and all the
animals of the forest will soon appear for their Busch light (TM)!

Busch is awful. I grew up on that crap. In the 1970s, that was what
the parents drank, so when there was a BBQ, wedding reception or
whatever, there were 12 oz cans of Busch, and that's what we kids got.
I'd rather have Natural Light. These days, because of carbs, it's
either that, or for a treat I buy a 24 pack of Ultra. Good beer is too
carby.

Ultra doesn't taste like much. A 12 oz Ultra poured into a pint glass,
with 4 oz of good beer added works. ALDI has a decent one for pretty
cheap. Shuteye Peak. It's $13.99/12 pack. I should try it with the
Nat Light. :-)
Back in the old days, parents let kids drink beer on occasions. Now,
kids and younger grownups drink significantly less, but smoke a lot more
reefer.

Yuck! I think it smells horrible! =( Well, as long as they aren't my

We did Jasmine rice and beef potstickers. This was a follow-up to a
lunch of salad with creamy vegetarian roasted bell pepper soup.
What a coincidence. I had a vegetarian cup of coffee this morning.

Simple and easy!

Today I had an eye appointment to check before cataract surgery but the
referral didn't come over right. Sadly found out at the Doc's office.
Ah well, a silver lining, it's only 1/4 mile from my favorite Asian
store and exactly in line with the way home.

I picked up lots of greens and a 16oz pack of oyster mushrooms for 3.19
(they are the cheapest spot for mushrooms in town). I looked for the
right pork cuts I wanted to try in a pork pho but they only had other
cuts that cost 7$lb so skipped. It can wait to our regular shopping
day (tomorrow).

Looks like a pork sausage, mushroom and cabbage dish with diced
tomatoes tonight. I have a bunch of bacon that can go in it.

Sadly the wife is away at some company event, so I had to cook for myself.
=(

Todays dinner consisted of:

2 fried eggs with black papper and Worcestershire sauce.
1/3 of an apple I found behind a box in the refrigerator.
1/3 of a bag of very tasty dried mini pork susages.
2 slices of rye/spelt bread.

Delicious and all the nutrients the body needs! To go with that, most
likely a glass of milk!
