What are you chowing down on tonight?

I couldn't decide what I wanted but then spied a rope of Kielbasa
sausage in the 'frig. It was sliced in about 4-inch lengths then
split open. Into the toaster oven to brown and I used a cast iron
meat press to flatten the sections once they began to slightly curl.

No hotdog buns so it was white bread wrapping the sections and smeared
with spicy brown mustard. Pretty darn good for an undecided meal.
Enough left over for Wednesday supper or even lunch.

Leftovers. On Sunday he had chicken skewers. Last night we had steak. I
had the chicken on a pita with some chopped tomato and onion and
tzatiki. My wife had the steal sliced up and on top of leftover spinach
salad.

What are you chowing down on tonight?
Grilled Korean short ribs in a gochujang/teriyaki/sesame oil marinade
with black and white sesame seeds on top. Paired with broiled French
sliced green beans topped with crispy onions.

Vanilla ice cream scoop with a spoonful of very dark clover honey on top
and crumbled pistachio nuts.

Kombucha tea, chilled over ice.

About my speed of cookery just now. Might do that for dinner tonight.

Last night was a gumbo from a box kit. Cajun type.

My wife had hot dogs, and I had leftover pork ribs with barbecue sauce.
Tonight will be pot pies or shrimp scampi from frozen.
We are getting a new LG fridge on Friday, so reducing frozen food seems
like a good idea. I wanted a cheap fridge. My wife didn't. Guess who
won?

This one. It sticks out a bit, but we can handle that. It went in
without incident. We didn't hook the ice maker up. Ain't no water back
there. More storage. ;)

When we re-did the kitchen in '87, all our major appliances got boxed in
by counters and cabinets. Now we have to buy appliances that fit the
paradigm. I dread a new stove, but so far, so good.

had to fit in the existing hole, which forced us to buy a Chinese

Wow, that sticks out quite a bit, but I don't think a counter
depth 'frig would have made much difference. Is it finger
print proof?

As mentioned here a long time ago, I had to have my 20+ year
old Whirlpool chiller worked on 3 or 4 years ago; it came
with an ice maker that I never hooked up. The repairman
said that's why I never had to make a service call. But I
did have him to remove the ice maker when he worked on my
freezer and it freed up a LOT of wasted space.

I dread the day when I have to replace my refrigerator but
I'll go with a bottom freezer and no ice or water in the
door. They all pretty much come with an ice maker these
days, but it won't be hooked up to a water line either.

Well, stuff like that does drive some folks crazy, thus my
'frig is white, slightly textured so it doesn't show prints.
And yes, the folks it drives batty are sometimes men.

("No, no, no. Don't wipe in a circular motion, up and down
only!!) Statement made by a man I knew a few years ago.
Made up my mind then and there to never buy a stainless
steel refrigerator.

My wife had hot dogs, and I had leftover pork ribs with barbecue sauce.
Tonight will be pot pies or shrimp scampi from frozen.

Currently visiting my father in sweden, so dinner last night was an epic
portion of swedish meatballs (made according to the family recipe) with
pickled cucumber, lingonberries and mashed potatoes.

We wanted to be an all Korean appliance family but they have been a
disappointment. Our Samsung refrigerator did not fail to disappoint. The
compressor worked fine. It was the seals, hinges, the fan, and the ice
dispenser that was the problem. Other than that, it was a rock solid
refrigerator.

I keep reading these on Samsung frigs, which is a crying shame as they
have exceptionally well-designed storage spaces and overall layout.

They also look very top end, in the same way LG does:

Otoh, their laundry units seem to have recovered from a few major glitches.

https://www.consumerreports.org/appliances/appliance-recalls/samsung-top-load-washing-machines-recalled-for-fire-hazard-a7986864210/

"Samsung has recalled more than 663,000 top-load washers featuring its
super speed wash option due to fire risk if the machines overheat and
short-circuit. The super speed setting is marketed as an advanced
cleaning technology that allows you to wash a full load of laundry
considerably faster. However, this recall only affects a series of
top-load washers with the super speed wash setting—not front-loaders."

I can only relate that we had nothing good to say about a Whirlpool top
loader which was incapable of removing soap foam from the wash.

Astounding, given the lid opening and wash drum was so large you could
have laundered a baby hippo in there!

The idea of a fast washing machine is very appealing to me! The Samsung
front loader washer we had took forever to wash a load. It did have a
very cool pancake motor that drove the drum directly. We replaced it
with a Whirlpool "Commercial Series" washer. The washer had some
problems with it too. Mostly, the Commercial series is a marketing term.
What a disappointment that was. I like large drum washers. If we ever
get a baby hippo, we'll be all set up for that.

My wife had hot dogs, and I had leftover pork ribs with barbecue

We are getting a new LG fridge on Friday, so reducing frozen food
seems like a good idea. I wanted a cheap fridge. My wife didn't.

There's not much that can be done with the digital control systems but
the mechanical parts should be easy enough to work on. We have an LG
dryer that's been going for 13 years. The belt and pulley for the drum
is pretty much the same parts that I've seeing since the early 70's. I
suppose the heater or motor could go South at any time but these are off
the shelf components that are easily available and replaced.

That looks similar to my Samsung. Had one in the last house,, same
model in this house. Good layout, good lighting, holds temperature.

Only issue, I do have to unclog/defrost the ice maker a couple of times
a year. Every brand has ice maker complaints.

That@!

Which one laid the egg, the ice door or the panel control?

Are we in need of some kind of smart reset function, or did the ice door
fail and overheat the control panel out as a consequence?

Also frig wiring for door controls travels through hinge shielded
runners, just like one's car window power controls.

If we can do car wiring that lasts, why does frig door wiring break up
and short out?

They were unconnected. A plastic part on the ice chute broke the front
panel is the user control and the brains of the refrigerator. They seem
to be troublesome. I also had a problem with the bottom hinge bushing
wearing out. That's so weird - or is it?

Indeed, and here's where the wiring loom tends to break and short out:

i always remove those, i want the freezer space for food
and we don't care about having ice. always hear of people
having trouble with leaks and clogs.

our LG fridge has been doing ok since we got it but it
does have some odd quirks to work around. pretty much we
can use it almost the whole year round having it set on
the least amount of cold. once in a while i turn it up a
notch if we put a lot of warm food in the fridge but then
i turn it back down later because it will get things too
cold (like freeze some things towards the back cold).

Everybody's different. We use so much ice the icemaker can't keep
up. I buy a bag every week when I go to the grocery store.

On mine, (Samsung French door) the ice maker is in the refrigerated
section. I still have plenty of space so not a bother. I like the
convenience of it.

I don't understand the need to turn the fridge up and down. My freezer
is at zero, the refrigerator is at 37 and it holds it rather well.
There is a drawer that can be set from freezing to warm but I keep that
at 37 also.

complexity really means!

So we had a time when these things were within our power, yet now...

Washer drum spin drives - this is basic drive belt, unit balance and
clutch engagement, yet somehow modern washers in either vertical or
horizontal orientation go walkabout like a drunk Asstralian...

We're regressing, and it ain't just from suspect circuit boards I believe.

loader which was incapable of removing soap foam from the wash.
Lol...yabutt...yer gonna need a swimming pool within weeks...
It is amazing how many basic appliances we can't seem to find properly
built anymore?
Real basic functions too.

Yes, that's one improvement. The other one is that no flight mechanic is
probably needed in the Boom. I imagine that with fiber optic cables and
modern materials, the new generation will probably a lot lighter as well
bringing with it somewhat improved fuel economy.

I do hope they launch commercially in 2030. As much as I hate
travelling, anything that allows me to spend less time inside a
composite tube is a good thing!

That nose in the sky landing profile freaks me out.

I wonder how low the stall speed is with those delta style wings.

No, the only thing I have heard is that so far they have only tested
sub-sonic speeds. Hopefully they will move on to testing super-sonic speed
next year.

I think that was one of the problems they found out during testing. Some
flutter that they need to understand and control.

The original concorde shifted the weight profile of the plane between sub-
and supersonic speed with pumping the fuel to different fuel tanks
distributed throughout the plane.

Due to thermal expansion, when concorde was supersonic, you could squeeze
in a hand behind the pilots seat, which was not possible when sub-sonic.

And did you know the SR-71 leaks fuel when on the ground, due to the exact
same phenomenon!

And I am certain that when you push the human organism and our

if the "edge" kind of rips apart reality for a tiny instant, allowing
some elect few to get a glimpse. But this is just speculation and

No hotdog buns so it was white bread wrapping the sections and
smeared with spicy brown mustard. Pretty darn good for an
undecided meal. Enough left over for Wednesday supper or even
lunch.
My wife had hot dogs, and I had leftover pork ribs with barbecue
sauce. Tonight will be pot pies or shrimp scampi from frozen.
We are getting a new LG fridge on Friday, so reducing frozen food
seems like a good idea. I wanted a cheap fridge. My wife didn't.
Guess who won?
LG's don't have a good reputation around here.
True of a lot of their scroll compressor failure models.
I have an LG OLED 55" tv, and have no complaints. On the other hand, I
only use it as a monitor connect to a Radxa zero, so it could be that it
might be horrible if you have to rely on the product itself for TV and
"smart" functions. Caveat emptor, as the saying goes!

Those LG displays were (in their day) very much brighter and color
saturated than others.

I had one for a time as a monitor and it required readjustment for TV
vs. data.

This is the truth! It is enormously powerful and can easily burn a hole

became comfortable to watch.

that it might be horrible if you have to rely on the product itself
for TV and "smart" functions. Caveat emptor, as the saying goes!
I have an old LG TV.  Works fine hooked to the cable box.
Leave it to one of the "D's" to change the subject to something as far
flung as TV's.

What TV do you have? I think it's high time for you to confess!
Better not go there ... Her Majesty is very high-strung.
Thank you for the warning Hank! You are right, I will back off.

What are you chowing down on tonight?
I couldn't decide what I wanted but then spied a rope of
Kielbasa sausage in the 'frig.  It was sliced in about 4-inch
lengths then split open.  Into the toaster oven to brown and
I used a cast iron meat press to flatten the sections once
they began to slightly curl.
We are getting a new LG fridge on Friday, so reducing frozen
food seems like a good idea. I wanted a cheap fridge. My wife
didn't.  Guess who won?
LG's don't have a good reputation around here.
True of a lot of their scroll compressor failure models.

September 8, 2020 – Settlement Website Is Live
The class action lawsuit detailed on this page has been settled. Please
fill out the form on the official LG refrigerator compressor settlement
website to file a claim.

A detailed breakdown of the settlement can be found over on our blog.

This Alert Affects:
Anyone who owns an LG refrigerator and had problems with the linear
compressor, a part responsible for cooling the appliance.
What’s Going On?
LG Electronics has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging a
defect is causing the fridges to stop cooling, sometimes within only a
few years of use.

The refrigerators at issue contain linear compressors, which were
supposedly meant to make the fridges more reliable and durable. For many
consumers, however, the refrigerators have stopped working within 36
months of use in what one news outlet calls a “pandemic of dying fridges.”

Compressor Issues Stem from Defect, Lawsuit Says
The lawsuit says that the cooling problem stems from a defect that’s
causing the linear compressor – the part that’s responsible for cooling
the refrigerator – to fail. When this happens, the fridge will start to
warm and food will begin to spoil. Some consumers who had this problem
have reportedly been forced to “live out of coolers” or prematurely
replace their fridges.

According to the lawsuit, the problem starts in the tubing of the
evaporator, a part that works in conjunction with the linear compressor.
The suit says that the tubing is “prone to corrosion and pitting” and
that small holes can develop, which can cause leaks and allow air to
enter. Because of this “air leakage,” the refrigerant that moves from
the evaporator to the condenser generates excess pressure that puts
stress on the compressor, according to the suit.

The compressor can’t take this additional pressure, the suit says, and
begins to fail. It is usually the discharge valve in the compressor that
is the first to go, as it is the weakest component.

Even if the fridges are serviced, they will likely fail again within two
years because LG technicians are allegedly using the same defective
parts in repairs. So, even though their refrigerators were “fixed,”
several of the plaintiffs later noticed that food was again going bad
and that their fridges weren’t keeping cool.

Correct. Mine was good for about three years. Now, a couple of times a
year I have to clear where the ice jammed and stops operation. Takes
about 10 to 15 minutes with a hair dryer and good to go again.

It is the most common complaint with every brand. A good one would
probably cost a dollar more to manufacture.

Yes, they can. Our icemakers over the past 35 years have been
largely trouble-free. A handful of times the water line has
frozen and we had to thaw it.

I've only had a refrigerator/freezer with an icemaker since I moved
here. (When I lived in TN I used ice trays.) Never had a problem with
the icemaker in the ancient fridge/freezer my parents bought or the new
Frigidaire I bought about 6 years ago.

I haven't had any problems with my ice maker. If it breaks, you bolt in
a new one, plug it in, and wait. No problem.
