FFS I want to buy a replacement kitchen knife--why in Cthulhu's mephitic green squamous

I guess we better not tell him that Amazon is having a Prime
Big Deals day on October 8 & 9. That will really set him off.
I've already started my list.

Is someone forcing him to shop on Amazon? Ads on Amazon and other web
sites: why the surprise? It's been going on for years. Here's a hint.
Don't buy stuff you don't want or need simply because there are pop up
ads and "suggestions". Most people know how to ignore them.

I believe the point is that it's a bit of a stretch to try and derive
someone's interest and even taste in music from the fact that they're
buying a knife.

Makes sense to me. I have different playlist to listen to depending on
what I'm using the knife for.
For the bread knife, a classical symphony is perfect
Slicing a tomato would be a bit more upbeat, maybe some rock 'n' roll
Chopping and dicing an onion, Jazz is perfect.

Seems that with different size knives, different music would be
recommended. Amazon is just trying to help you be a better cook.

There's a song that covers both knives and forks:

"A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork
That's the way we spell New York"

That wanted to make me cut up a cabbage for coleslaw.

YouTube is going to crap with advertising. I had to watch a 1 minute ad
to get to the actual video. I used to play a lot of music from them,
but no more. There are other sources. I have an ad blocker, but does
not stop them.

Before clicking on "Send" I thought I'd try the link again. This time a
2 minute ad for some movie.

Yep, Youtube is cracking down on the use of ad blockers although you can
sometimes click SKIP a few times to get past them. Of course they are
owned by Google who wants to control everything.

Some links are better than others but the whole forcing people to watch
ads or to pay to view what used to be free content is getting ridiculous.

I stream a lot of video on Tubi. They have commercials but they are
short and infrequent. When you start a program there are usually two
short ads, like 10-15 seconds each. Then about every 20-30 seconds they
will pause for one or two short commercials. It is not a major
interruption as it stands now, but whose to say they won't start running
longer ads of more frequent breaks.

1. Tubi doesn't have ads every 20-30 seconds. That would be
unwatchable.
2. My ad blocker stops all ads on Tubi.
3. You can download your Tubi movie and you'll get a version without
any ads.

I don't think they're trying to derive his interests. I think
they're just trying to get him to buy what they want him to buy.

I get the same thing with Amazon Prime Video. They'll recommend
movies that very obviously have nothing to do with my taste. I
imagine they've paid the money for the streaming rights and want
to get their money's worth, especially from users who don't pay
for the ad-free tier.

You have a hangup with AI :)

The other day, I had to learn how to use Inkscape software. It's a bit
like CorelDRAW, but free. Anything I had to figure out, I asked my AI
acquaintance. That shortened the learning curve enormously.

You just have to use it wisely and be prepared for it to talk nonsense
every now and then.

But you and I agree, Cindy, no one is forcing him to shop on Amazon or
to pay any attention to what other alleged customers listened to in
terms of music podcasts. I tend to be very linear when it comes to
shopping. I shop for what I want and ignore the rest of it.

At work they use Google Chrome as the default browser. Sometimes when
I'm on my lunch break at work I'll look something up, perhaps a local
weather forecast, but because my work computer came from NY, Google pops
up and asks me if I want to check the weather in White Plains, NY. Uh,
that would be a NO. Prompts me to sign in to Google. NO.

Location aside, just because I look something up does not mean I intend
to buy it. Sometimes I'm merely curious. Google is entirely too
intrusive. I don't use Google at home.

The OP wrote: ""Customers who bought this also listened to these Amazon

And perhaps we all live on the Big Rock Candy Mountain.
But you and I agree, Cindy, no one is forcing him to shop on Amazon or to
pay any attention to what other alleged customers listened to in terms of
music podcasts.  I tend to be very linear when it comes to shopping.  I
shop for what I want and ignore the rest of it.
I got fed up with Google tracking my shopping searches and having ads
showing up all time for items I had looked at online. I got into the habit
of occasionally doing searches for lingerie at Victoria's Secret. Now I get
ads showing hot women in sexy lingerie.
At work they use Google Chrome as the default browser. Sometimes when I'm on
my lunch break at work I'll look something up, perhaps a local weather
forecast, but because my work computer came from NY, Google pops up and asks
me if I want to check the weather in White Plains, NY. Uh, that would be a
NO. Prompts me to sign in to Google. NO.
Location aside, just because I look something up does not mean I intend to
buy it. Sometimes I'm merely curious. Google is entirely too intrusive. I
don't use Google at home.

You should use DuckDuckGo (ddg.gg) or startpage.com. That will at least
shield you somewhat from the influence of google.

I'll put a word in for Russia's Yandex - their results are smartly
non-biased.

Yandex is a very fascinating options from a privacy perspective. Sure,
russia will track your choices and interests, but, what's the
probability of russia and the US cooperating exchanging information on
you? Pretty close to zero these days I'd say.

So I have heard of some technologists who actually do have yandex email
based on that reasoning.

I forgot they had email too, oh well...back door to Pootin who's eagerly
tracking all our Amazon Prime day purchases to see if surface to air
missiles are on the list...

I stocked up on pool torpedoes, just in case he invades my motel...

Careful there, you don't know what they could contain. Given the fact that
israel managed to stick some explosives into pagers, Putin could very well
stick some more in one of the pool torpedoes!

Good gravy, you think maybe they have a thermonuclear torpedo for
sending up the Thames River?

interesting pop ups.

Maybe, but at least they are 40 years younger than your Majesty, and
probably not nearly as vindictive.

Everybody pretty much tracks your online shopping. The supermarkets will
track my purchases too. That's just the way marketing works in the year
2024. I think there's one store that might not be tracking my food
purchases but they certainly could be because I use a card for my
purchases. As it goes, I'm not going to use cash because I'm fearful of
being tracked.

With all those free range parking lot chickens running around, might
they be a form of trade currency?

I guess we better not tell him that Amazon is having a Prime
Big Deals day on October 8 & 9.  That will really set him off.
I've already started my list.
YAY!  Sell me some more shit Amazon!
Would you like me to drop by your house and disconnect
your internet connection for two days??
Is someone forcing him to shop on Amazon? Ads on Amazon and other web
sites: why the surprise? It's been going on for years. Here's a hint.
Don't buy stuff you don't want or need simply because there are pop up
ads and "suggestions". Most people know how to ignore them.
I believe the point is that it's a bit of a stretch to try and derive
someone's interest and even taste in music from the fact that they're
buying a knife.
I don't think they're trying to derive his interests. I think
they're just trying to get him to buy what they want him to buy.

FFS I want to buy a replacement kitchen knife--why in Cthulhu's mephitic green squamous
realm would I have any interest in a spread entitled, "Customers who bought this also

Good grief, 5 cents, please.
Welcome to the year 2024. In this era, everything is connected - even if
you don't know why or how.
