But not together. I used the juice from a jar of Claussens, put in a 69
cent cucumber, added extra salt and black pepper, and topped it off with
vinegar. A week later, they were thoroughly pickled. When I finish
them, I'm going to put in another cucumber.

Also, if you've never had hickory nuts, they are one of the most
delicious nuts. They *are*, however, a bitch to crack. I ordered some
from eBay.

I also ordered a special nutcracker, as the standard ones are not robust
enough.

I like merchants that have free ship to store.

Just a hint for your well being. If your wife ever gets PO'd at you,
hide that nutcracker.

We get along very well. Have you ever cracked hickory nuts?

I took a pork shoulder steak, and cut up the fatty portions (the
majority) into small pieces. I fried it all in very hot rendered lard,
adding salt, black pepper and cayenne, then most of the way through
cooking, powdered sage. I love crispy fried pork fat. The middle piece
was medium well, and very tender, and the little pieces were nice and
crispy. A bit like streaky bacon, but without the cured taste.

I had a hickory tree at the last house. You could not crack them even
running over them with the car.

I've cracked them, using a hammer and brick. Then you have to pick out
the tiny bits of nut meat with an icepick or small stiff wire.

It's not worth the effort. It was mostly done during the great
depression years by poverty stricken low class people in rural areas. It
gave a glimmer of fancy that could be obtained without the dollar.
