We are keeping it fairly simple this year. My wife likes to have multi
course dinneers than will keep us eating all night. I prefer something
lighter. We have some smoked salmon for an appetizer. We went out this
morning to pick up something for tonight and tomorrow. We ended up
getting some sea scallops that I plan to pan sear and the main course.

We picked up a nice looking rolled rib roast that we plan to have
tomorrow and have invited my brother and SiL. My wife is making exlairs
for tomorrow's dessert.

We closed all the windows so the cats wouldn't get too scared from
possible fireworks here in suburbia, turned on the airco and went to
bed at 10 PM. I got up on Jan 1st at 4 AM. Rest assured: 2025 is quite
doable, so far.

Thanks for the reminder. Earplugs on the nightstand tonight, ready
for midnight insertion.

We're expecting kind of a slushy night with the low only around 0 C.
I'd crack the window open a little, but it'll be quieter if I don't.

Instant Pot Chili here, with green onions and shredded cheese on top,
along with a dollop of sour cream. Oh, and some Margarita's too,
with the salt ring.

Leftover rib roast here. I think I'll slice some up, soak it for a
while in a little fish sauce, garlic, and whatever else seems nice,
then serve it over a salad dressed with balsamic vinegar, soy sauce,
and extra-virgin olive oil.

My mother used to cook nice big roasts and always made lots of gravy to
go with it. Then she would use up the leftovers and gravy. Sometimes it
was sliced and warmed up in gravy for hot roast beef sandwiches, and she
usually made fries to go along with it, always extra good with the
gravy. Other times she would grind it up, mix it with the gravy, add
some vegetables and make Shepherds Pie.

I'd have to fabricate some stock to make gravy. I didn't get a
teaspoon of fond out of this roast; all the juices stayed inside.

I really don't like warmed-over meat. I made a cheesesteak with
some of the leftovers, and it was mostly onions with the meat
barely warmed through.

I am not all that thrilled about reheated meat either, though warming it
in a nice rich gravy works, and I loved that Shepherds Pie.

Today, da family is going to have Korean BBQ. My brother gave me some
gift certificates to da joint. Last night, I had a bowl of mapo tofu
ramen. Gosh, it was good. I hope to do nothing on Wednesday.

The side effects weren't nearly as debilitating as the first
shot. Just teeth chattering chills and a very droopy feeling.
One thing I noticed this time as I did last time, when I woke
up each morning I was simply ravenous. That's unusual as I
normally don't get hungry until after I've been up 2 or 3 hours.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. My first shot was painful and hurt for weeks
but that was the extent of my suffering. Still.... from what I heard
from friends and family who had shingles it is well worth the side
effects. Having been triple vaccinated against Shingles I am going to
be really pissed off if I still get it.

i always tell the person giving me a shot or drawing blood i'm a
machinist, getting jabbed with jagged pieces of metal is just part
of the job and i never feel a thing from the tiny tubes designed
to penetrate skin. it usually raises an eyebrow from them. :)

Strange, I've been following the Shingrix posts and the
two that I had left me with zero side effects, in fact
the shots were painless too, months apart.

Must be something to do with everyone being different. <shrug>

My first injection made me think I'd been shot through the
apple orchard and hit every tree. The flu shot doesn't
bother me and thank goodness this vaccine only has the
two injections.

my father and my wife both had shingles. they both said it feels
like a blowtorch being held to their skin. my father got the
singles vaccine when it became available and the shot gave him
the singles again. apparently the vaccine has been improved
since then, or so they say. my wife refuses to get it.

Damn, one would think she'd want it after having shingles once,
do people get it more than once? Having it offers no immunity?

I knew a guy that got it in his eye, that's supposed to be
really dangerous. It sort of burned off part of his eyebrow
too.

When I was a kid, probably 8 or 10 at the time, I overheard my parents
talking about out neighbor, Mr. B. Turns out, my mother said, Mr. B had
shingles under his arm pit.

What a visual for a kit. I knew what shingles where, they are on the
roof. Can't image them under your arm.

My brother-in-law used to do roofing. He's worked with shingles. I'll
have to ask him if he's gotten the vaccine but I don't think he's into

But, his big niece stories are hilarious. I wish he would publish a
compendium ... "Best of Officer Dave's Big Niece".
It would sell like hotcakes on amazon.

I've only seen him crowing about himself for the most part, he even
snips me out of the attributions. That's how I know what he's all about.
The Big Niece stories would make a good TV series character though.
Maybe All In The Family or similar.
Love me some Archie and Edith.
I wonder how many people loved that show without realising that Archie
was a parody of THEM.
Mostly Aussies, would be my guess.
At least one Canadian. I'm not sure about you yet.
I caught on to the Norman Lear humor.

And don't forget our own hawaiian, Uncle Tojo Bunker-jefferson ... This
would make a great TV show! Uncle Tojo george jefferson Bunker is a guy
living on da rock. He hates everyone except da hawiians and da asians...

Tojo's not really a hawaiian himself, but is only a mixed breed asian
married to an evil white woman. He always attacks anyone that isn't pure
hiwaiian, or pure asian. He Hates all white people with a vengeance,
just like george jefferson.

Shit, it would be an easy show to produce. Just bring a cellphone camera
and follow him around, and you'd easily film each episode.

I never got into the BN stories - they were too long to read and
somewhat mean. OTOH, the series does seem popular in rfc.

Not a problem. I never held a gun to anyone's head and forced them to
read them. They are all free to ignore, skip or filter my posts. The
poor dumb bastards must be enchanted to me. Considering that so many of
them are gay I am guessing it is a homoerotic thing.

Absolutely, Officer Dave! People are free to read your posts, or ignore
them (as long as her Majesty allowed them to be posted).

And I'd also say that folks who don't read your posts are definitely
dumb ass gay homosexuals.

I also remember that Popeye also had lots of problems with queers when
he got to be your age. Maybe they're after you?

Good Luck dave.

Officer Dave: "it is a homoerotic thing". ... direct quote.

So, now you can relax, and it's even OK if you go and suck a few dicks.
Don't worry about it. I don't care a bit, and I won't tell Queen

I'm not dissing your posts or saying that your stories are without
merit. They're just out of my genre circle. If you had written about big
car or big guitar, I'd be reading it at this very moment.

It certainly could be a homo thing. The ones we got here are supa-mean
and unhappy. They must be using iPads.

I prefer the ’60 Chevys to the "batwing" ’59...

Chevrolet was stuck with the ’59 hardpoints but managed to de-emphasize
the batwings by squaring them off, returning to double or triple round
taillamps rather than the odd cat’s eyes, and simplifying the grille for
a more ’60s appearance...

Against all this toning-down was the chrome jet plane emblazoned on the
'60 rear flanks...

The ’61 Chevy vastly simplified the shape, particularly at the rear with
the huge horizontal fins gone...

The only gays I can think of here are Greg and, in the past, possibly
Sheldon. They both have that same gay self hatred that occurs when men
are so conservative they can't forgive themselves for being gay.

But who knows what's hiding in the closet.

It was not aimed at you. There are a couple of nymshifting assholes and
constant assholes who bitch and wine about how boring my posts are but
they read them and they reply to them like a bunch of silly school
girls. They are the reason why I am suspicious of any new user. When
they come in with a new name and post a bunch of crap they get tossed
into the nymshifting assholes filter. Then they get pissed off because
they are ignored and have to try changing names.

I'm not a nymshifting asshole, so I must be a constant asshole, in
your childish vernacular.

I tend to read the first one or two lines of your posts. If your posts
are longer, you'll either start talking about one of your army of
"friends" (read: people who once held a door open for you in a shop)
or you'll tell us how you ate something special in a foreign country
in 1976. I don't need to know.

somewhat mean. OTOH, the series does seem popular in rfc.
https://groups.google.com/g/rec.food.cooking/c/iDVqQLPJM4A/m/LkuVjviR_y8J
Mean?  They are true.  Yes, like watching the proverbial train wreck.
If Uncle says it's mean, then BN must actually be an asian or hawaiian.

Man, you do need to respect stuff like that. I remember when Popeye
wanted to jump BN's bones, but I don't think he was ever able; then he
went senile.

What a visual for a kit.  I knew what shingles where, they are
on the roof.  Can't image them under your arm.
 >
 >
Just think of all the roofers who haven’t got the Shingles vaccine.
I wonder if the vaccine would put them out of work.  No material.
Perhaps we need to give you some new material Ed.  ;-)
 >
Ed's material is much better than your endless paragraphs of you
patting yourself on the back.
Maybe you can lookup some of his old big niece (BN) stories. Hilarious
stuff. His style is sort of like bob newhart would have told it.

His BN is comedy WELL worth reading. Most of his other stuff is as you
say ... long winded gasbag stuff, crowing about punishing wrongdoers and
enforcing the most obscure, tiny, idiotic regulations. (I'm sure he was
a "hall monitor" or "patrol boy" in grade school.

I also liked his stories about collecting roadside trash and dumping it
on his enemy's property, but not as good as the BN tales.

I'm pretty sure he's a high Dataw official, appointed to her majesty
queen McCrone's court. At least, they do seem to kiss each other's ass
constantly.

OK. As we get older, it is good to keep your brain exercised and in
shape too. To do that, I've been doing a lot of studying important stuff.

I can name the capitol of every US state, every Canadian province and
every country in Europe. Just ask me.

OK, here is an example. Lithuania is L.

The capital of Lithuania... Riga is Estonia, I believe. Ljubljovic
doesn't exist. Liechtenstein might be its own capital. Latvia sounds
like the neighbours. Ok, I give up.

Well done, and no one even had to set you up for it.
When travelling my wife likes to pass time by listing the 50 USA states.
She makes it a little easier by doing in in almost alphabetic order.
Almost because she goes by the first letter... the one you would call
the capitol. Then I do it on order of location. After that I go through
the state capitols. It is interesting to watch American quiz shows when
they ask state capitols and I usually do better than the contestants.

my father and my wife both had shingles. they both said it feels
like a blowtorch being held to their skin.
When I was a kid, probably 8 or 10 at the time, I overheard my
parents talking about out neighbor, Mr. B.  Turns out, my mother
said, Mr. B had shingles under his arm pit.

Probably just some soup here.  I've been rather lethargic
all day after Monday's second Shingrix injection.  A nap
has helped to perk me up.
No kidding? Well hopefully we will be spared that
nasty shingle thing. I've seen it on friends and
it's nasty looking, and I hear it feels even worse
than it looks.
my father and my wife both had shingles. they both said it feels
like a blowtorch being held to their skin. my father got the
singles vaccine when it became available and the shot gave him
the singles again. apparently the vaccine has been improved
since then, or so they say. my wife refuses to get it.
She is a wise woman! I naturally refused corona vaccines. I told my wife
that she shouldn't but she insisted. After her vaccine she was sick for a
week, and after that never touched it again with a 10 ft pole.

My father on the other hand, is a vaccine ninja. He takes (almost)
anything that can be delivered through a needle, and never has any side
effects.

I think one acquaintance of my wifes mother died due to the corona
vaccine.

Caveat emptor!

LOL that reminded me of someone telling me someone had fallen out of the

We are keeping it fairly simple this year. My wife likes to have multi
course dinneers than will keep us eating all night. I prefer something
lighter. We have some smoked salmon for an appetizer. We went out this
morning to pick up something for tonight and tomorrow.  We ended up
getting some sea scallops that I plan to pan sear and the main course.
We picked up a nice looking rolled rib roast that we plan to have
tomorrow and have invited my brother and SiL.  My wife is making exlairs
for tomorrow's dessert.
Enjoy your meals! :)

I am still not feeling well from before Christmas and still have little
appetite. I've been subsisting for the last week or so on hot chicken
bullion with saltines, the occasional scrambled egg and buttered toast.
I'm not sneezing anymore but still much sinus congestion (using lots of
tissues). Last weekend it migrated to include chest congestion; I've
been coughing a lot and my throat is very sore. Needless to say I have
nothing planned for NYE or New Year's dinner. I did make some cherry
Jell-O this afternoon; should be nice and cool on my throat. :)

If you have any OTC stuff, continue to take that and some
honey lemon cough drops would help soothe your throat.
Sometimes you just have ride this stuff out.

My mother used to get upset with the medication my father used on us
when we were young. I remember a couple times when I was really coughing
and hacking and he would come into my bedroom with a little glass and he
would tell me it was cough syrup but it tasted awful so just knock it
back and don't taste it. It was straight Rye whiskey. It worked.

Now that I am older and like the taste of liquor I tend to have a hot
toddy when I am coming down with something.
Then there was my thesis advisor, who was quite a character. He used the
red toque green toque remedy. You put in a red toque and drink a bottle
of whiskey. Of you are still sick the next day switch to the red toque
and drink a bottle of rum. There will be nothing left alive in your body
after the second treatment.

Yeah, well I don't have any whiskey or liquor in the house. Don't think
it would actually help with sinus problems and a chest cold, either.

course dinneers than will keep us eating all night.
BTW nobody has to read this, but our shopping experience today was to
make up for my failed trip to Costco yesterday. My wife did not even
want to go into the store because there were so many people and with
Covid trying to make a comeback she did not want to be in a crowd.

On the way in I noticed that the east side of the store where access to
check out is usually blocked they had opened it up and there were a lot
of people in line. I went back and grabbed a nice looking rack of lamb
and then headed over to get a case of Perrier there was a double line
from the checkout area to meat department. The lamb is good and it is
cheaper than most other places, but I was not going to spend more than a
half hour in line to save a couple dollars.

I don't go to the store the day before a holiday. I'd rather have
crackers and peanut butter that fight the crowds for real food.

I have filtered water and not over priced bottles too.

This was yesterday not today and it was before noon. I had expected it
to be busy, but that was nuts. It seemed kind of odd because I had been
shopping in local malls the week before Christmas and they were
surprisingly not busy. When I went to the local grocery store this
morning we were waited on immediately at the seafood counter and when we
got to the checkout there was one with one customer paying and about to
leave so we lucked out there too.
I have filtered water and not over priced bottles too.
I have distilled and it's good fro drinking but the fact is that I
really like Perrier. I used to have a snack at night or occasionally a
night cap, but now my wife and I split a bottle of Perrier.

We are going to survive on snacks (easier to print than hors...). My
wife made pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and dismembered a cauliflower.
Oh, and she made ranch dressing.
I cut up some celery and carrots, unfroze and boiled twenty large shrimp
and made ham-wraps. Tomorrow, I'll cook up some chicken wings.
Which reminds me, she also trimmed some radishes and made shrimp dipping
sauce using ketchup, mayo and creamed horseradish.
It was a lot of work for old people, but it's over. Happy New Year!

New Years Eve was always a snack food night for us. pepperoni,
cheese, crackers, pumpkin pie, cheesecake. this year we had beef
on weck with potato chips for a change.

made beef stock with a couple forgotten about beef knuckles found
in the freeze, simmered them all day. roasted a beef top round to
medium rare and let cool. made au ju with the drippings from the
roast, several cups of the velvety gelationous stock, a bit of
water, and a teaspoon of better than bouillon. sliced half the
roast as thin as i could with a slicing knife and heated it up in
the au ju. served on kimmelweck rolls fresh from a bakery.

encore presentation with the other half of the roast is coming
saturday evening.
