I have made it, but sans the fruits - I prefer pearl onions and red
mini-peppers. I also use a dutched up oven, not a tagine.

works great.

The pearled couscous is also used as a bed for braised chicken thighs
with lemon slices.

Ya want that recipe?

Oh and applewood smoked lamb shanks are insanely good too!

Mebbe you need it with a familiar accent:

I use apple juice and cider vinegar for my shank sauna to finish.

I guess I'm even more comfy than Leo!

There are rednecks here too, although not 50%. But that
semi-religious, offensive, psychiatric right-wing drivel that comes
out of types like Coogan's Bluff seems to be typical for extreme
right-wing Americans.

Of course, what clouds the picture is that some of these trolls
constantly change their name. A mental patient may change their name
but that doesn't change how they talk.

By FAR the lesser "evil" I'd say!

From the beginning, I thought it was stupid of the Democrats to choose
Kamala Harris. She's a woman, she's intelligent, she's not white and
she's woke leaning. That's asking too much of most Americans. They
should have picked an average white man, maybe her intended VP.

end he looks like the lesser of two evils, given the two
choices I had.
From the beginning, I thought it was stupid of the Democrats to choose
Kamala Harris. She's a woman, she's intelligent, she's not white and
she's woke leaning. That's asking too much of most Americans. They
should have picked an average white man, maybe her intended VP.
I'm not going to get into a political pissing match here but
suffice it to say she is disliked here more than Trump, so
that should tell you something, and it has nothing to do
with 'rednecks'.

Certainly, but they come in different types.
Voting here usually boils down to which candidate one dislikes
less, unfortunately.
I can hardly imagine a candidate I'd dislike more than Trump.
Two choices, and the people have spoke.

Defunding the police is a ridiculous idea.
There are people here that chant that with a sign in their hand.
I think they're idiots. I think/hope that most police are ok and if
they are, they're indispensable to society. Just get rid of the bad
apples.
Police forces are begging for applicants here, to little avail.
I know I wouldn't want that job, seems like the criminals have
more rights than the police now.

Replace the bad cops with
better ones and preferably even more of them. IMO.
That job is hard to fill here now, many know what a pain
in the ass it is.
I can imagine.
Shame on the mess.

Hawaii has a shocking lack of Middle Eastern restaurants. We do go to
one on special occasions. It's a whole nother world within those walls.
Here's a dish made with chicken or lamb and nuts. The last time we was
there, I fell into a deep sleep on the cushions. They sprayed some
rose/orange water in my face to bring me to. It's a traditional thing
they do. If you're in the desert, they throw hot sand in your face.

It's a Moroccan dish called pastilla. It's traditionally made from
pigeons. Ha ha - so funny. That is powdered sugar and cinnamon on the
top. It's not for breakfast as it's a savory dish. It's supposed to be
an easy dish to make. Well, okay. I'm up to it, I suppose.

perhaps I should just grab one and start munching on a whole one like

I never understood cornish hens. I've seen them mentioned on RFC
before, but I passed at my local market. Two of them frozen cost more
than a whole chicken, for a whole lot less meat to boot.

A semi-regular RFC discussion was always ox-tail. I've seen a bit of
that at my local market lately, but the cheapest package is $10, and for
so little meat... I don't see the point paying that much for scraps.

Not excessively so:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tyson-All-Natural-Premium-Chicken-Cornish-Hen-Twin-Pack-3-25-lb-Frozen/48533971

$10.54
$3.19/lb

$10.95
$2.36/lb

And the meat is sweeter by a noticeable margin.

The typical fryer these days is a hormone-laden monster compared to a
natural free range bird.

The wife and I missed the chicken delivery window from a local farm, and
since we'll be in sweden for 3 weeks for christmas, we'll miss the next
windows as well. But in january we hope to get our free range, farm
produced chicken and it will be very exciting to compare the taste with
the hormon-monsters we probably usually get in the super markets (and they
add water as well those bastards!).

Expect a less yellow-skinned bird, and as well much sweeter tasting meat.

Ironic that free range eggs tend to be a lot more yellow/orange.

The world is an awesome place filled with much wonderment. You would
think that one of those baby chickens would cost less than a grown
chicken. They should sell those things 2 for 5 bucks in the hot food
section of stores. I'm might even go for one of those. Our friend must
think they're special party food. I'll have to give that a try.

Oxtail soup is popular on this rock. It probably comes from the
plantation days when some discarded tails was all the workers could get.
It's quite easy to make but a bowl will cost you 20 to 25 bucks at a
restaurant. Maybe I can make it for Thanksgiving. That would be radical.
Oxtail soup in Hawaii is different from the soup made on the mainland,
which is more like a stew. Hawaii's version is a Chinese based, clear
soup.

Now we're talking:

https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/oxtail-soup-16991398

Recipe courtesy of Rutt's Hawaiian Cafe
Oxtail Soup

Boil the oxtail in 2 gallons water in a saucepan for 2 hours over medium
heat, skimming the top for any impurities and adding more water if
necessary to ensure that the oxtail is covered with liquid. Check the
meat for tenderness, then continue to cook if it is not tender. Add the
beef base, salt and pepper, then add the ginger, shiitake mushrooms and
daikon. Let simmer for 30 minutes, then add the celery and carrots.
Continue cooking until the meat comes off the bone easily.

Indeed - "You're next!" Our friend has said that she will bring some
Cornish game hens to our Thanksgiving lunch. I'm not a big fan but
perhaps I should just grab one and start munching on a whole one like
those Chinese dudes. That would be classic.
They truly would be a rotisseries machine treat!
Precisely the right size for a meal for 2 or 1 hangry ohana...

Hawaii's version is a Chinese based, clear
soup.

It sounds good to me. I like a clear broth so after boiling the tails
for a while, I'd rinse off the tails and dump the water and continue
with fresh water. I don't care for star anise so that's not going in -
unless a Chinese person is going to have some. Typically, the meat is
served on the bone but I'm not against deboning the dish - unless a
Chinese person is going to have some. The carrots, mushrooms, and diakon
makes the soup more Okinawan style.

It's interesting alright. The cheese thing is probably the influence of
the post-war influence of the American army bases in Okinawa. It's the
same thing that happened in Korea and Hawaii. We all unabashedly have a

I've had them in the past. If you have a big appetite you can make one
per person, even a half is good portion. They are just a small breed of
chicken.

IMO, the main advantage would be to impress your dinner guests

I've had had them a couple times. My mother did them once and then we
had them for Christmas dinner the month after my MiL died. My nephew
was living with a very talented chef and she prepared them. She did a
great job on them. A turkey would have been a lot easy but the
presentation was amazing.

Based on the reports I see in the regional public health releases that
probably saves them a lot of work. There are an inordinate number of
Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants that get shut down for
violations, but the Middle Eastern are most often the source of
infections. Those rotating spits of meat are food poisoning waiting to
happen.

Also watch out for the unshaven arabians with long beards. They can be
really nasty! Clean shaven ones, are generally ok, except if those are
unshaven ones masquerading as ok arabians. Very tricky to detect them!

True. But its culture and cuisine are Middle Eastern flavored.

"The Muslim conquest of the Maghreb that had begun during the mid-7th
century was completed under the Umayyad Caliphate by 709. The caliphate
introduced both Islam and the Arabic language to the area; this period
also saw the beginning of a trend of Arab migration to the Maghreb which
would last for centuries and effect a demographic shift in the region."

True, but history has moved on. Today, the culture and
cuisine of Morocco are distinct from those of modern
Saudi Arabia, Egypt,(and other ME countries).

The cultures and cuisines of USA have changed from the
current culture and cuisines of European nations which
colonised the Americas just a few centuries ago.

Much of the Middle East is so close to Europe, that
Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, are popular cheap holiday
destinations.

Distinct, but identifiably similar.

Kind of the way Afghan food is a bit like Middle Eastern

I never said Morocco is in the Middle East. Its culture and

True. But its culture and cuisine are Middle Eastern flavored.
You mean that they're Muslims. That doesn't make it part of the Middle
East. The US isn't Europe.
I never said Morocco is in the Middle East. Its culture and
cuisine were strongly influenced by Arab immigration starting
in the early 8th Century.
Good, then we agree.

Thanks for the geography lesson. That's just what Americans call that
area of the world. Feel free to be outraged by it if you want. It's not
my kuleana. Here's a nice American English lesson for you.

First it was good, but towards the end it became a bit too much, he told

You can't speak of Turkey anymore. Erdogan (Turkey's Trump) doesn't

This is the truth! Strangely enough my father just came back from a 1
week holiday in Morocco, and there were some dried fruits in every
single dish. First it was good, but towards the end it became a bit too
much, he told me.
For me it's almost always too much fruit, but as a change of pace no
problem.

The amazing ability of goats to move about on rocky mountain sides is
legendary. This is not one of them.

"Why was he stuck?" Indeed.

Da Hawaiians don't typically see goats on the mountainside. Perhaps it
was much ado about nothing. We don't see bears on the mountains either -
praise the Lord. I did see one of these critters hanging on to some
bamboo. I suppose the little guy wanted to talk to me about my car
insurance.
