Ever see this Japanese candy?

I used to get this all the time at the Japanese grocery store, but I
haven't seen it for years. These were a jelly candy based on kanten, I
suppose. They were fruit flavored rectangles, covered with rice paper,
wrapped with cellophane, in a plastic bag. I found this on the web,
but I'd rather find the distributor:

Is that the candy where you eat the wrapper too? If you're ever up
this way, I bet you'll find it on Clement St or in Japan town. Why
are you looking for the distributor?

I've only seen the rice paper candy in the little box with the toy in it.
You can still get those.

We have it in Hawaii and the brand is Tomoe Ame. I remember, as a
kid, when the box came with great toy- I still have a glass "apple" I
got in a box, and cost 5 cents. Now when I get Tomoe Ame for my
grandchildren it only has a paper prize and costs more than 10 times
as much.

Yes it is rice paper surrounding the jelly rice candy. Fun candy.

That stuff is availble everywhere here. I think Bartell even sells it in
the candy section. I remember the first time we got it after we moved here.
We were in some place in Pioneer Square, sitting at a counter with stools.
My dad was trying to peel the rice paper off it and some guy laughed at him
and told him that we were supposed to eat the whole thing, including the
paper. We were all very skeptical on this, thinking the man was just
messing with us. So we all ate just one and waited, thinking for sure that
we were going to die or at least have some sort of stomach distress or
choking or who knows what. But of course it was fine. None of us
particularly liked the candy. It wasn't bad. Just wasn't really good
either. But we did like getting the toy. These days the toy is no good,
just like in Cracker Jacks. I think they came out with some kind of rule or
law or something that whatever they put in there can't be something that a
kid could choke on. They're usually those temporary tattoos now.

It's not a law, it's the lawsuits. The toy can't
be anything else because somebody will claim an
injury and sue. (A lawyer told me this.)

Thanks, Cea, but what I used to buy is a little different. It was made
with agar agar (kanten), and came in multiple flavors -- strawberry
was my favorite. Here we can get Botan rice candy and it's not the
same.
