It's been a week since I adopted her and Cleo has settled in
beautifully! She's still a tad skittish and needs her own space, which
is fine with me. But she's turning into a love bug. She loves to get
scritches and she sleeps on a pillow behind my head. She now joins me
on the couch when I am watching TV or reading a book. She "kneads" me
and purrs. So sweet!

She loves playing with the fishing-wand toy and I use that to work out
her excess kitten energy. I have a carpeted cat tree with a barrel and
if I dangle the little mouse from the wand in front of it she leaps
through the barrel back and forth like a little circus cat. :)

She gets the "zoomies" and runs from one end of the house to the other.
She loves looking out the windows at the birds (and NO, Graham, she will
*never* be allowed outside so she won't be killing them).

She's eating well, loves her kitten food, wet & dry, and no problems
using the litter box.

She also doesn't seem to have a problem being left alone when I'm at
work during the week. I come home and find toys in the living room have
been moved around. But she sleeps a lot, as cats do.

I'd share a picture of her but I can't figure out how to get this damn
Win11 computer photo import feature to let me save pics from the SD card
to someplace where I can actually find them. Technical learning curve.

All this just to say, Cleo is a happy and fun kitten! I'm so glad I
adopted her. :)

Looking forward to pictures!!

In 'File Explorer' I had to create folders to store different
things such as pictures or some documents. There might be a
simpler way, but photos I'd right click the picture and when
the box appeared I'd do a 'Save image as' to whatever folder
I'd chosen. ⬅️This is probably clear as mud.

I'm now able to save the files but I can't seem to access postimages.org
anymore. Doesn't matter if I use Firefox (I have the duckduckgo
extension) or try to access it using Edge, I get errors telling me the
connection is not secure. I really don't like futzing around with new
computers.

PowderDVD seems to have a feature for that. Me, I just plugged my SD
into the computer slot and copied it from that drive to my pictures
directory. Looks like they didn't install the right drivers?

Sorry, what is PowderDVD? At any rate, I have figured out how to use
the photo import feature and save the images from my camera's SD card
where I want them (it's painful). But now I cannot upload the images to
postimages.org. The site is blocked saying my connection is not secure.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1431159

Try changing secure DNS over HTTPS (DoH) to "Off" or "Increased
Protection" and in Connection Settings change "Use system proxy
settings" to "No proxy".

https://smallbusiness.chron.com/fix-blocked-websites-firefox-52590.html
A block in Firefox prevents you from viewing website pages in your
browser window. Blocks usually occur when you have an add-on -- a piece
of software that performs specific functions -- that guards against
certain sites. Blocks are useful if you do not want problematic sites
popping up on your business computer, but they are easy to forget about
once they are set. Use the Firefox menu to edit the settings of the
BlockSite, FoxFilter or LeechBlock add-ons, which are commonly used to
stop sites from loading in Firefox.

BlockSite
Launch Firefox, click the "Tools" menu and select "Add-ons" to go to the
Add-ons Manager page.

Click the "Extensions" link on the left side to display BlockSite in the
window, then click the "Preferences" button.

Select a website in the Blacklist text box and click the "Remove" button
to unblock it. You can also click the "Clear list" button or the "Enable
BlockSite" check box at the top to allow all sites to be visible again.

Your browsers probably don't like the certificate.
issuer= /C=US/O=Let's Encrypt/CN=E5
subject= /CN=postimages.org
notBefore=Oct 20 16:45:46 2024 GMT
notAfter=Jan 18 16:45:45 2025 GMT

In Firefox, you just need to add an exception for Let's Encrypt. You
can do that on a permanent basis, or as a one time only exception
(every time you encounter a Let's Encrypt certificate).

Click on the "Advanced" box/link. the click on the "Add Exception"
box/link. Unmark "Permanently store this exception" for a one time
use (prolly a better choice at this point). Click "Confirm Security
Exception" and you should be good to go.

Actually, it appears Norton AV is generating the exception.

Preloaded bloat ware.

You're fine to shut it off and go with Windows Defender and firewall,

Isn't Windows Defender or whatever it's now called sufficient? I don't

It's the year 2024 and yoose people still can't figure out how to work
your computers. It's a very sad thing.

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

Actually, it appears Norton AV is generating the exception.
I don't know shit about Norton AV, because it is shit.  And proving
it now by giving bad info about postimages.org.
I'm just tired of dealing with it.  Could be Malwarebytes also blocking
or Adblock software.  I've stopped trying to upload images
postimages.org for the moment.

I have to go into work and setup a Windows computer for them. It's so
crazy. They should pay me $500 to do that! I the first thing to do is
remove bloatware.
Then prevent programs from loading on startup. At that point, I can
start loading in programs.

Windows is so awful but I try to make it as sleek and fast as possible.
I've been avoiding going into work but my day of reckoning will soon
come. Perhaps I should take up drinking liquor.

It may be best if you refuse to work on that non google rubbish. Both

Shudder! This reminds me of my youth when I had my own consulting company
doing IT-support for small business and retired people. This was a huge
part of my daily routine. I did get paid for it, but it still isn't fun.

This is also why my parents got the ultimatum, move to the lizard, or get
no more support.

They accepted the lizard, and from that point in time, there were no more
viruses, reinstalls, scams, etc.

Oh yes... ubuntu is often very buggy. As for mint, I think mint is a good
option. I've heard if spoken of in poisitive terms from time to time.
Elementary I have no experienc of.

Just like any distro. Gnome, KDE or Xfce or anything you like. Plenty of
software available, and they have a unique "webbased" system here:
software.opensuse.org. You search for what you want, click on a link, and
the GUI package manager opens and installs. If you are more of a CLI guy
there's the command zypper that does the same thing.

It is my great sorrow. I prefer a regular distro, without any flatpaks or
immutability. I know enough of the system and how it behaves, to not shoot
myself in the foot, and I also use it for day to day computing and not as
some kind of container platform. So if opensuse moves to that, I'm forced
to move on sadly. =(

I'm currently looking at FreeBSD, debian, slackware and perhaps alpine
linux to replace my dear opensuse if it is discontinued. =/

Those are not beginner friendly but they all align more with how I like my
linux to work.

It's been a week since I adopted her and Cleo has settled in
beautifully! She's still a tad skittish and needs her own space,
which is fine with me. But she's turning into a love bug. She
loves to get scritches and she sleeps on a pillow behind my head.
She now joins me on the couch when I am watching TV or reading a
book. She "kneads" me and purrs. So sweet!
She loves playing with the fishing-wand toy and I use that to work
out her excess kitten energy. I have a carpeted cat tree with a
barrel and if I dangle the little mouse from the wand in front of
it she leaps through the barrel back and forth like a little
circus cat. :)
She gets the "zoomies" and runs from one end of the house to the
other. She loves looking out the windows at the birds (and NO,
Graham, she will never be allowed outside so she won't be killing
them).
She's eating well, loves her kitten food, wet & dry, and no
problems using the litter box.
She also doesn't seem to have a problem being left alone when I'm
at work during the week. I come home and find toys in the living
room have been moved around. But she sleeps a lot, as cats do.
I'd share a picture of her but I can't figure out how to get this
damn Win11 computer photo import feature to let me save pics from
the SD card to someplace where I can actually find them.
Technical learning curve.
All this just to say, Cleo is a happy and fun kitten! I'm so
glad I adopted her. :)
Jill
PowderDVD seems to have a feature for that. Me, I just plugged my
SD into the computer slot and copied it from that drive to my
pictures directory. Looks like they didn't install the right
drivers?
Sorry, what is PowderDVD? At any rate, I have figured out how to use
the photo import feature and save the images from my camera's SD card
where I want them (it's painful). But now I cannot upload the images
to postimages.org. The site is blocked saying my connection is not
secure. Damn I hate new computers.
Jill
Apologies, powerDVD. You may not want it but if having problems
watching a DVD (and seems to have picture stuff too), it's good.
Apparently not free forever but I'm just testing that.

Apparently not free forever but I'm just testing that.
PowerDVD isn't free, which doesn't matter because VLC is the best
player and is free.

I just got an external USB one because of that. Works fine. It was
39$ but was a 'black Friday' type sale. I just looked, seems still on
sale?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5CFWHPL?

Nicely sturdy unit.

Not adding internal CD/whatever is getting more common. Even desktops
are skipping them to cheap out.

It's been a week since I adopted her and Cleo has settled
in beautifully! She's still a tad skittish and needs her
own space, which is fine with me. But she's turning into
a love bug. She loves to get scritches and she sleeps on
a pillow behind my head. She now joins me on the couch
when I am watching TV or reading a book. She "kneads" me
and purrs. So sweet!
She loves playing with the fishing-wand toy and I use
that to work out her excess kitten energy. I have a
carpeted cat tree with a barrel and if I dangle the
little mouse from the wand in front of it she leaps
through the barrel back and forth like a little circus
cat. :)
She gets the "zoomies" and runs from one end of the house
to the other. She loves looking out the windows at the
birds (and NO, Graham, she will never be allowed outside
so she won't be killing them).
She's eating well, loves her kitten food, wet & dry, and
no problems using the litter box.
She also doesn't seem to have a problem being left alone
when I'm at work during the week. I come home and find
toys in the living room have been moved around. But she
sleeps a lot, as cats do.
I'd share a picture of her but I can't figure out how to
get this damn Win11 computer photo import feature to let
me save pics from the SD card to someplace where I can
actually find them. Technical learning curve.
All this just to say, Cleo is a happy and fun kitten!
I'm so glad I adopted her. :)
Jill
PowderDVD seems to have a feature for that. Me, I just
plugged my SD into the computer slot and copied it from
that drive to my pictures directory. Looks like they
didn't install the right drivers?
Sorry, what is PowderDVD? At any rate, I have figured out
how to use the photo import feature and save the images from
my camera's SD card where I want them (it's painful). But
now I cannot upload the images to postimages.org. The site
is blocked saying my connection is not secure. Damn I hate
new computers.
Jill
Apologies, powerDVD. You may not want it but if having problems
watching a DVD (and seems to have picture stuff too), it's good.
Apparently not free forever but I'm just testing that.
This laptop doesn't have a CD/DVD drive.
Jill
I just got an external USB one because of that. Works fine. It was
39$ but was a 'black Friday' type sale. I just looked, seems still
on sale?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5CFWHPL?
Nicely sturdy unit.
Not adding internal CD/whatever is getting more common. Even
desktops are skipping them to cheap out.
You totally missed my point. I'm transferring images from an SDHC
card in my digital camera via SDHC card slot on the computer.
Nothing to do with CD's or DVD's or your external whatever.

There comes a time when the users have to stand up and be counted and
let the manufacturers and retailers know that they insist on certain
options.

I recently took a bag of old DVD's to a charity shop ..
which refused them because they are obsolete and "nobody
uses them". I offered them to our cleaner and she said the
same. I offloaded them on Freecycle.

We do still have a player and use DVD's; I've just
ordered DVD of Wolf Hall which we missed when it was
broadcast on TV 10 years ago.

The sequel (The Mirror and the Light) has just been newly
serialised on TV and we've been gripped by it.

They are an obsolete medium on computers. It's rare to find new
software or anything on disc. We still sell a lot of DVD's in our
second hand shop. $1-5 each depending on the title.

Nobody wants VHS tapes anymore, so I grab old Disney tapes for free when
I come across them. The kids don't care about the quality and still
enjoy watching them. Occasionally the babies like the bright colored
animations.

There are movies released this century that never came out on DVD
because the studio didn't think there was a market for it.

I have two HP laptops, both are 14". neither has a CD drive.

The first one is about 7 years old, 8 gig of ram, weighs 62 ounces

The new one is 2 years old, faster with 16 gig of ram, and more storage.
weighs 48 ounces.

Not a big deal sitting on my lap, but if I had to carry it through
airports a lot, the weight could be noticeable.

In 2006, I bought a 17" Toshiba for business. It weighs about twice your
newer HP.
Lugging that to clients was a real drag. The battery won't hold much of
a charge and it runs XP so it's "archived" with all my old desktops,
which go back to a 486 model.

really had nothing to do with the SD card reader and importing photos

I'd share a picture of her but I can't figure out how to get this
damn Win11 computer photo import feature to let me save pics from
the SD card to someplace where I can actually find them.
Technical learning curve.
All this just to say, Cleo is a happy and fun kitten!  I'm so
glad I adopted her. :)

This laptop doesn't have a CD/DVD drive.
Mine does. The laptops I rejected did not. At least if you have enough
USB ports you can get a external CD/DVD drive.
I don't want or need an external CD/DVD drive on this machine.  And that
really had nothing to do with the SD card reader and importing photos
from my camera, which I did figure out how to deal with.

And all this crap has nothing to do with cooking!

Honestly, the payback should end where kitties are concerned.

Every human is entitled to companionship by God's creatures.

Genesis 2:18-19
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I
will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God
had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and
brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the
man called every living creature, that was its name.

Proverbs 12:10
Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy
of the wicked is cruel.
