What will be dished up at your house tonight? Any
pre-cooking for Thanksgiving in the USA homes that
will mean your dinner might be something very quick
and simple tonight and Wednesday night?

Here it will be boneless country style pork 'ribs'
baked in a pan with rice. The ribs got seasoned and
a quick browning and then into the Pyrex dish and
smothered in rice I had cooked and seasoned as well.
Diced onions were part of seasoning with some spices
along with parsley. Covered and into the oven the
dish went at 350°F for about an hour so they'll be
tender.

Those parsnips will be part of this meal.

Sounds seasonally on point!

Beef curry (Japanese S&B) with pearl onions and multiple mixed veggies.

Served over basmati rice with saffron.

served in a baptismal bowl because spell checker nearly screwed me out
of basmati...

I have nothing planned for tonight. Lunch at work today was leftover
spaghetti with Italian sausage from Sunday. I'll probably just snack on
cheese & crackers tonight.

You may keep your share of the parsnips. ;)

Are you sure you don't want some?? They're not terrible,
but not great either. I don't think I'll be blowing the
grocery budget on them.

Jill has a very limited food repertoire. Typical white old church lady

LOL Parsnips have never been my cup of tea.

I'm dealing with computer problems at the moment. I'm going to have to
replace this old laptop with a new one. Not looking forward to doing
the file transfer thing and setting everything back up.

Oh, more of a priority: I'm adopting a kitten on Friday! She's about 4
months old. She's a grey tabby with a white face and white blaze on her
chest. She was abandoned and taken in by a nice couple who already have
3 cats and 2 dogs so they need to rehome her. They have a heated garage
so that's where she's been staying. That might sound awful but they
have a small cat tree out there and a litter box and toys and she's
comfortable. They go out and play with her. They took her to the vet
and had her spayed and got all the required shots. I'm told she's very
sweet. They'll be bringing her to my house on Friday morning. They
were calling her "Kitten". She looks like a Cleo to me so that's her
new name. I ordered kitten food for her from Chewy. The office where I
work will be closed for Thanksgiving weekend on Friday so the cat and I
will have a long weekend for her to get used to her new surroundings and
me. Of course she'll hide, but I have no doubt she'll start to explore
and get comfortable if I just let her alone for a bit. :)

I got a new laptop almost two years ago and I found
out if I plug a thumb drive into one of its' ports
I can copy everything from the old p.c. to the new
one in one fell swoop. Plug it into a slot on the
new laptop, open it, and voilà! everything is on
the new computer. Just make sure the thumb drive
is large enough and hang on to it in case you hit
a snag.

Oh Graham, it's just a baby kitten! Jill's new
baby might end up being just an indoor kitty and
no danger to birds. My Pepper is strictly indoors
and has never harmed a bird (not that she wouldn't
enjoy sinking her teeth and claws into one).

Dogs that get free reign from their owners do a lot of damage to
wildlife here too. Kangaroos with babies in their pouch may not be
able to escape a dog that's after it.

We let our cat out. She roams all over the parking lot. She keeps the
chickens off the walkway. This keeps our walkway clean - this is very
useful to us.

But da boids - is she a boid killer?

If not I think in your parts they are useful against centipedes:

The cats and the chickens are cool with each other. That's so weird. It
seems that the chickens have wiped out the centipedes. I haven't seen
one in years. The chickens love those bugs.

I also know Graham is from the UK where many people seem to think cats
should be allowed to wander around outdoors. I have never let either of
my previous cats go outside. Strictly indoor only. This cat will not
be going outside, either. They're not outside killing the beautiful
birds I also post links to pics of occasionally.

How To Train Barn Cats
Oh man, I've used those in my camper, nothing like waking
up around 2am to a loud thumping noise, or the smell if
you don't find them soon enough, over in that closet you
forgot to check.
What a way to go, I hate to see any animal suffer, not
to say I won't kill one though.
Yeah we'll hang flypaper if we feel the birds are not in residence,
otherwise - hard pass.

my barn cats for lunch a few years ago, can't erase that
from my memory.
That would have been terrible. This picture is a cat with a lethal
brown snake around its neck. I don't know how it ended. Ten days ago,
I got up extra early and saw one of our cats play with a baby
small-eyed snake, in the living room. He didn't get bitten and I got
the thing outside.

You folks have poisonous snakes around your home, right? I'm not
very up on snakes, thankfully we don't have many venomous snakes
in these parts. Is a small eyed snake dangerous?

Small-eyed snakes are bad, but brown snakes are worse. Both are
common, but small-eyed snakes are nocturnal, so you don't see them as
often. And then there are 20 more types around here.

Once, a small-eyed snake. I know better now. 99% of the time they want
nothing from us except being left alone. 1% of the time, brown snakes
are moody and territorial. One charged at me 10 years ago. I ran.

Sure did, the worst part was I couldn't do shit about it,
the hawk half flew off with her at a low clip. The hawk

Hawks will also kill other hawks.

Found a perfectly sectioned off hawk wing on my patio table one morning.

🪽

Like it had been removed with a scalpel. And nothing more nearby.

Wow, tuck that in your hat, it may bring good luck. Hawks are cool,
my wife says I have a pet hawk, there's one here that sort of hangs
around if I'm outside, I think it's a coincidence but one time this
summer I was spreading some mulch and something big buzzed my head,
scared the hell out of me.

I looked over to the fence and it was a hawk, so here's me singing
pretty bird to it. He just sat there, prolly thinking 'look at this
asshole'.

Cool story, they are amazing predators but also curious enough to become
familiar.

The wing was from a younger male we had seen, clearly the boss hawk was
taking no competition for his turf.

I actually buried it so the dog wouldn't get choked.

He could have grabbed the cat. That's what I did 10 days ago. And then
I grabbed the snake with thongs and put it outside. Granted, it was a
baby, but they're already venomous.

Bravo.

https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380

The impact of free-ranging domestic cats on wildlife of the United States

We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0 billion birds
and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals annually. Un-owned cats, as opposed to
owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality. Our findings suggest
that free-ranging cats cause substantially greater wildlife mortality
than previously thought and are likely the single greatest source of
anthropogenic mortality for US birds and mammals.

I may be from England but I don't necessarily share the average
Englishman's mindset:-)
It was a cat-loving, High Court judge in the 19th or early 20th
Century who ruled that the bloody things should be allowed to roam
freely as that was only natural. He didn't feel the same way about dogs!

will not be allowed outside, either. If you don't ant to see pics of

I am not a cat person. I don't value them as pets like I do dogs and a
few other animals. I think of them more as pest control tools. I spent
enough time around farms to appreciate then has useful tools to deal
with rodents. I know that our cats killed a few birds, but we also had
no mice when we had cats. Unfortunately, cats had short lives here due
to getting run over by cars or becoming dinner for coyotes.

That tends to be the fate of outdoor cats. Good thing I don't live on a

Please don't!
You don't have to look at them.  And keep in mind, unlike the "UK
mindset", I have never, ever let my cats go outside.  Indoor only.
The birds are safe and so is the cat.
Jill
I may be from England but I don't necessarily share the average
Englishman's mindset:-)
It was a cat-loving, High Court judge in the 19th or early 20th
Century who ruled that the bloody things should be allowed to roam
freely as that was only natural. He didn't feel the same way about dogs!
As I said, I've never let my two prior cats roam around outside. Cleo
will not be allowed outside, either.
We get it.

Who on earth heats their garage?
Americans. My previous house had a heated, attached garage,
which contained the water heater. Heating the garage kept the
water pipes from freezing.

Not that we have much freezing weather in southern South Carolina, but
yes, the water heater is often located in an attached garage. So is
mine, but my garage is not heated space. I didn't bother to ask the
woman who rescued this abandoned kitten why they have a heated garage.
Not my monkey, not my circus.

Oh, she's pretty!  Will her cat tree come with her?
Yes, she is pretty! I'm told she's very sweet. No on the cat tree. I
already have one, along with a gazillion cat toys, litterbox & litter,
scratching posts, etc. (My last cat, Buffy, died 4 years ago but I
didn't get rid of any of the cat stuff.) Chewy.com delivered an order
of dry and canned kitten food yesterday. :) Having a cat that is less
than two years old is new to me but this should be fun!

I'm typical American. Cats and dogs indoors, exceptions for dogs to go

Some dogs live indoors and some never see the inside of a house. Some
dogs like being tied up. I had a Bouvier/Shepherd that we got when he
was 18 months old. He used to ask to be let out and would then run out
to the rope and wait to be tied up. I never taught him that.

"Studies suggest that 60-70% of American cat owners allow their cats
to roam outdoors at least some of the time."
"Approximately 80% of cat owners in the UK, including England, allow
their cats some level of outdoor access."
"Estimates suggest that about half of Dutch cats are outdoor cats."

And the winner is...

I've never understood why anyone would think domesticated cats belong
outside. I used to cat-sit for a former neighbor who insisted her two
cats be let outside during the day. One cat (Schwartzie) showed no
interest, preferring to snooze on the couch, so when I was cat-sitting I
let him do that. Her other cat, Fedders, loved going outside.
Sometimes I couldn't find him to get him inside in the evening. I'd
call and call for him. As you can imagine, if he didn't show up I
worried something had happened to him. (This was the same neighbor who
called me one morning to ask if I knew there was an alligator in my back
yard.) I never understood her attitude about cats needing to roam
around outdoors.

Yet we often see cats in our yard that are obviously not feral.
Whenever we spot a cat in the yard, one of us runs outside and
hisses at it until it legs it out of sight.

We occasionally see cats in our yard and in our barn and we have no idea
who they belong to. As far as I know, none of our neighbours have cats.

I'm dealing with computer problems at the moment. I'm going to have to
replace this old laptop with a new one. Not looking forward to doing

I got a new laptop almost two years ago and I found
out if I plug a thumb drive into one of its' ports
I can copy everything from the old p.c. to the new
one in one fell swoop. Plug it into a slot on the
new laptop, open it, and voilà! everything is on
the new computer. Just make sure the thumb drive
is large enough and hang on to it in case you hit
a snag.
And always remember, the 3-2-1 Rule!

3 Copies of Data: The first principle of the 3-2-1 Rule is to have
three total copies of your data. This includes the original data and at
least two backups. The rationale behind this is to mitigate the risk of
data loss due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, or corruption.

2 Different Types of Media: The second component requires that these
copies be stored on at least two different types of media. This could
include a combination of hard drives, solid-state drives (SSDs), tape
storage, or cloud storage solutions. Using different media types helps
protect against failures that may affect one type of storage but not
another, thereby enhancing redundancy.

1 Copy Off-Site: Finally, the rule stipulates that at least one
backup copy should be stored off-site, away from the primary location
where the original data resides. This is crucial for protecting against
disasters such as fire, flooding, theft, or other catastrophic events that
could compromise both the original data and local backups.

Then you will be safe! =)

Jill
YAY!!!!! Be sure and post pictures of her!!
Maybe it's my imagination, but tabbies are so
sweet in their nature.

Were you migrating data from Windows 7 to a Windows 10 machine? This
new one will be a Windows 10 laptop. I know there is a file transfer
function but not sure how well it ports between the difference in
operating systems. I do not want to have to re-create my Thunderbird
email list or lose things like my saved photos, folders with important
documents, etc. FWIW, I have all of that stuff backed up to an external
hard drive, not a thumb drive.

Good to know, thanks! I asked the "tech guy" at the company I work for
but he didn't even know there was a file transfer function. I
remembered it from when I had an HP laptop back in 2010 that was
crapping out on me. Bought another laptop, connected the two with an
ethernet cable and did the transfer. That was years ago, though, and
both were running Windows 7. I wasn't sure how or if it would work with
the operating system change.

a snag.
FWIW, I have all of that stuff backed up to an
external hard drive, not a thumb drive.
Jill
W10 ? That'll be obsolete next year.
Then, I might get an Ipad, much to my son's disgust.
Doesn't matter. I'll be able to upgrade the machine to W11. I use W10
at work so I'm familiar with it.

Those parsnips will be part of this meal.
You may keep your share of the parsnips. ;)
Jill
Are you sure you don't want some??  They're not terrible,
but not great either.  I don't think I'll be blowing the
grocery budget on them.
LOL Parsnips have never been my cup of tea.
I'm dealing with computer problems at the moment. I'm going to have
to replace this old laptop with a new one. Not looking forward to
doing the file transfer thing and setting everything back up.
Oh, more of a priority: I'm adopting a kitten on Friday! She's about
4 months old. She's a grey tabby with a white face and white blaze
on her chest. She was abandoned and taken in by a nice couple who
already have 3 cats and 2 dogs so they need to rehome her. They have
a heated garage so that's where she's been staying. That might sound
awful but they have a small cat tree out there and a litter box and
toys and she's comfortable. They go out and play with her. They
took her to the vet and had her spayed and got all the required
shots. I'm told she's very sweet. They'll be bringing her to my
house on Friday morning. They were calling her "Kitten". She looks
like a Cleo to me so that's her new name. I ordered kitten food for
her from Chewy. The office where I work will be closed for
Thanksgiving weekend on Friday so the cat and I will have a long
weekend for her to get used to her new surroundings and me. Of
course she'll hide, but I have no doubt she'll start to explore and
get comfortable if I just let her alone for a bit. :)
Jill
Purrfect! I love her already!

I'm told she's a really friendly little cat. :) She'll be frightened at
first in her new surroundings but she'll be fine. I won't push her.

What will be dished up at your house tonight?
I took half a jar of tuna and mixed it with lemon zest, minced
parsley, minced celery leaves, salt and pepper. Let it marinate
while I prepared salad (romaine, cucumber, thinly sliced celery,
grape tomatoes). Plopped the tuna on top and drizzled lemon
vinaigrette on top.

Any
pre-cooking for Thanksgiving in the USA homes that
will mean your dinner might be something very quick
and simple tonight and Wednesday night?
I made the cranberry-orange relish on Monday so it could
macerate. I'm going to try to talk my husband into making
the stuffing this afternoon, and I'll clean out the turkey.

I'll ask my husband what time he wants to eat tomorrow; he'll
probably say "around 2:00". That means getting the turkey
in the oven by about 9 am, to give it 4-5 hours roasting and
rest after it comes out of the oven. So while he's eating
breakfast I'll be stuffing the turkey, or he'll stuff it
right after he's done with breakfast.

Good plan. It's not nearly as stressful if some of the
cooking, slicing, chopping, peeling, etc. can be spaced
out over a few days.

For us, it was a long day of medical tests for Don. Looks like his
hernia operation in 2018 came undone? Comes and goes. Tired, we
stopped at HT for rotisserie chicken, some of Don's favorite tea, and a
creamer for me.

I'll bake the rum bread tomorrow and use some already dried croutons
for stuffing.

Is tortured factory chicken good for hernias that sometimes come
undone?
