This week we picked up a nice big ham hock and I started a pot of French
Canadian pea soup. I is simmering away. I just now remembered to put
some bay leave in it. It's been cooking for an hour and a half but it is
going to need about an hour more because the beans aren't mush yet. The
longer it cooks the easier it will be to retrieve the meat from the hock.

What is French Canadian pea soup?

Also, today I picked up a bag of four parsnips at
Walmart. There were no singles 'snips so it was
a bag. I know I can Google and search out dozens
or hundreds of roasted parsnips, but give me YOUR
recipe, please.

Parsnips have a fairly stout flavor, so I just us a little salt, maybe
some pepper.

Celery salt is sublime with them.

It's a nicely pungent but not too sharp salt.

Is it something popular in your neck of the woods?

Yes, I've had it on occasion, but I can't for the life of me remember in
what combination! My mother used to love it, but I don't remember with
what. It's probably one of those things that will come back to me in a
week or two, when doing something else.

Can they be bbq? I wonder if bbq parsnip with salt, pepper and melted
butter would be a way to consume them?

I do that with beetroots and I love it! Maybe parsnip is too tough and/or
plain to gain anything by it?

You pose a fair question.

But what holds for a carrot also should for the parsnip.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DFY-Uo_36h0?feature=share

Can be done on grass grill or in the oven.

This way could be good for grill marks first, but I'll go with the oven
pan method.

It's almost enough (but not quite) to call me back to Wal Mart tomorrow,
but oh the crowds...

Found semi-decent microwavable clams this last trip - and those are
tough to carry off as a frozen entree.

Yellow split pea soup, usually with some form of fatty pork. I use a
smoked ham hock.

OH, and still another reason to love Walmart...!!!

Walmart rolls back DEI policies, says it’s ‘willing to change’ after
activist’s anti-woke campaign

https://nypost.com/2024/11/25/business/walmart-rolls-back-dei-policies-after-robby-starbuck-pressure/

"Walmart is making a slate of changes to its diversity, equity and
inclusion (DEI) policies, becoming the latest in a growing list of major
corporations to halt the so-called “woke” initiatives...

Anti-woke activist and filmmaker Robby Starbuck, who has been leading a
campaign exposing major corporations’ woke policies, said on X on Monday
that he warned Walmart executives last week that he would be doing a
story on “wokeness” at the retail giant...

“Instead,” Starbuck shared, “we had productive conversations to find
solutions.”...

Starbuck outlined the changes Walmart agreed to make, including working
to remove sexual and transgender products inappropriately marketed
toward children, and reviewing grants to Pride events to avoid funding
sexualized content targeting kids...

The company has also decided not to extend the Racial Equity Center it
launched in 2020 as a five-year initiative, and will ditch the terms
“LatinX” and even “DEI” altogether in official communications. It will
instead focus on the term “belonging” for all associates and
customers...

Walmart also joined an array of companies in recent months – including
Ford and John Deere – to end participation in the Human Rights Campaign
Corporate Equality Index, which is an annual survey and report used to
gauge “policies, practices and benefits pertinent to lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) employees...”

Amazing! However, the cynic in me tells me this would never have happened
if the democrats would have won.

I would not be surprised if the woke policies would come back the second
Trump is out of office. =/

It takes a loooong time for a woke company to rebuild the trust they lost
by going woke.

I am guessing that it was embarrassing for a lot of Bud Light fans to
realize that they were drinking the kind of beer than an extremely
flamboyant like Dylan Mulvaney would like. Other beer companies have had
some success marketing to women, actual women.

I have spent enough time in bars to have learned that most women were
more into wine and mixed drinks. These days my only bar drinking is at
craft breweries and they often have more female customers than male.
Women do seem to like beer but it was a huge mistake to connect a very
popular beer with trannies.

Beavers are making a comeback here. The were pretty much wiped out in
the fur trade and then as pests. There are a few ponds in the woods and
the fields behind us and over the last ten years or so some beavers have
moved in. When kayaking on the local rivers and streams we come across
their dams. They can change the landscape.

I believe the rise of the sweeter microbrews changed that - Fat Tire Ale
for one.

And those wheat beers with citrus.

Oh yes, that was a huge disaster! It even made the news in europe in some

situation and it was discussed a lot at one of his bigger clients.

The entire nature of this matrix is to revise itself like a virtual Las
Vegas.

I honestly hate that these companies get away with a quick 'mea culpa'
and go forward like the past doesn't exist.

Imagine how many non-hires were the victims of those now-terminated DEI
programs.

I would like to see a national "settlement" in which those who can prove
damages get to be part of a class action pooled settlement in which
every damned one of these corporations is identified and made to
contribute meaningfully.

And I don't want to hear any bullshit about how it hurts their
shareholder value - they literally ruined lives and careers with casual
insouciance and the sheltering arm of the infernal DemoCrap party.

This must be made right.

Also, today I picked up a bag of four parsnips at
Walmart.  There were no singles 'snips so it was
a bag.  I know I can Google and search out dozens
or hundreds of roasted parsnips, but give me YOUR
recipe, please.
I remember years ago a friend made fab mashed parsnips, don't remember a
recipe...
OH, and still another reason to love Walmart...!!!
Walmart rolls back DEI policies, says it’s ‘willing to change’ after
activist’s anti-woke campaign
Amazing! However, the cynic in me tells me this would never have happened
if the democrats would have won.
I would not be surprised if the woke policies would come back the second
Trump is out of office. =/
It takes a loooong time for a woke company to rebuild the trust they lost
by going woke.

See Bud Light.
Oh yes, that was a huge disaster! It even made the news in europe in some
circles! My marketing/PR partner in the company was deeply analyzing that
situation and it was discussed a lot at one of his bigger clients.
The entire nature of this matrix is to revise itself like a virtual Las
Vegas.
I honestly hate that these companies get away with a quick 'mea culpa' and go
forward like the past doesn't exist.
This is the truth! I think consumers need to be way more principled when
it comes to the companies they support. Doing this woke dance, should be
very painful and expensive for these companies. If not, they'll just do it
again and again.

Imagine how many non-hires were the victims of those now-terminated DEI
programs.
I would like to see a national "settlement" in which those who can prove
damages get to be part of a class action pooled settlement in which every
damned one of these corporations is identified and made to contribute
meaningfully.
Amen! At least there have been some law suits and positive outcomes
against companies who fired people for not getting the vaccine. A catholic
woman was awarded several millions since blueshield fired her for not
getting vaccinated, despite the fact that she was working from home.
Sometimes there is justice!

And I don't want to hear any bullshit about how it hurts their shareholder
value - they literally ruined lives and careers with casual insouciance and
the sheltering arm of the infernal DemoCrap party.
This must be made right.
Amen!

There is a scramble among the corporations now, to seem as if they never
where woke in the first place. An acquaintance who is a middle manager
somewhere deep within the IBM machine told me the other week, that now, it
is not seen as good any longer to be against white men. It seems that with
Trump, corporations are now quickly adopting the story that they never
were woke in the first place. ;)

Isn't that "any way the wind blows" _convenient_ of them!

He also un-woked Tractor Supply and a host of others.

Corporate whores they al are, just scumsucking gutter-sluts for the
leftard herd mentality.

There should be no need for you to proactively have to defend yourself
against the googlers. This is a group for talking and social interaction,
so _not_ googling everything is actually the expected default. The ones
who should defend themselves, are the ones harping on everyone else to
"google it".

I'm looking forward to many wonderful and powerful parsnip recipes!

Peel and trim then. Cut lengthways into quarters.

Either, put them in a tin, sprinkle a little olive oil
and toss to cover; season; then roast in hot oven 35 to 40
mins.

Or, if I'm roasting a chicken or joint I just drop the
parsnips in the hot tin beside the meat. Start roasting
the bird/joint first because the veg won't take as long.
