We dodged a bullet yesterday when they were calling for 6-8 inches of
snow but it turned out to be only about two inches. I didn't really need
to shovel out parking area but it took only a few minutes. It was
another matter today. We were supposed to get another 6-8 inches and
they were pretty much on the mark. Had it been cooler and the snow
flakier we likely would have got that 8 inches, but for a couple hours
it was more like a frozen mist so there was less accumulation but what
fell was dense and heavy to push and lift.

I went out to the barn to get my snow blower and the damned thing would
not start. I gave up and figured it would wait until I was finished
shovelling and then it would start easily. While I was cleaning out
around the cars my neighbour was doing the lane and offered to clear the
rest of the parking area for me. I told him that now that we were done
the snow blower would start and that is exactly what happened. There is
probably some condensation in there that has frozen in the lines. Once
it got warmed up it ran great.

Good thing I had a hefty breakfast this morning. We had some back bacon,
peameal, a fried egg and some buttermilk pancakes. My wife is
intrigued by this pancake mix. She wondered how much oil and egg it
needs. None. Just add some water, about 4 parts mix to 3 parts water.
They are surprisingly good.

I put blueberries in it. Had the las of the last batch this morning.

I make a batch and get 16 to 18 pancakes from it. For each meal, i use
4, five if I have it and two pieces of bacon. I make the bacon in the
oven along with the first batch so I'm set for the next 7 to 8 days as I
alternate with eggs.

We had an extreme cold warning this morning predicting a windchill of
-40C.
However, that airmass stopped just east of the city and it was a balmy
-19C when I went for coffee this morning.

I'll just stay at home. I don't have a stove - it's great I don't have
to cook. By next week all the snow will be gone.

You win. I won't complain about 6 inches of snow at -3. I have been in
-40 once and I will be happy to never do that again.

Funny how -19 can feel so nice after that -40.

Both. -40C is the same as -40F.

Formula
(-40°F − 32) × 5/9 = -40°C

Ouch. It is 18F here. It must be rough for people used to your regular
climate. Feel sorry for Graham. I have experienced -40 C or F, same
thing. It is a whole new dimension of cold. I ran into in back in 1976
when I went out there to look for work. Apparently there were lots of
jobs out there. I arrived on Dec 6 got off the plane and directly into
the airport where my friend met me. We stepped outside and I walked into
a wall of cold. Holy crap it is awful.

Do you use something like Sta-bil in the gas tank??

We've had close to 6 inches of rain over the last 4 or
5 days and my sump pump in the basement was pumping
constantly starting Saturday night. It has finally
slowed down to about every 5-10 minutes but still
sounds like a dying cow down there. Lots of flooding
in several of the surrounding counties.

Cloudy, cold, and windy here.

I do, but I don't remember if I had some in this batch. It was fine when
I started it up a few weeks ago.

Mine runs a lot in the spring. There is a high water table here and
when we get snow melt and spring rains it cycles a lot.

If your basement somehow floods, Joan, you could invite "dsi1" over and
he could sail his model Hawaiian outriggers and canoes and such down
there...

What brand of pancake mix are you using?

I'm happy to report it is not snowing but it also is not 80°F (20°C)
outside, either. That was a fluke. It's 66°F/19°C. It poured down
rain yesterday and earlier today but the sun finally came out.

The 15-bean soup is simmering in the crock pot. I'm about to make some
cornbread to go with it. I can't decide whether to make corn sticks or
do the usual and bake it in the cast iron skillet.

It is the Krusteaz mix that Ed recommended. $15 for a 12-1/2 lb bag of
the stuff.

That sounds pretty tasty. The last time I had corn sticks was in the
early 60s. I think that's what they were..... corn bread cooked in a
cast iron pan with a bunch of small cob shaped molds.

Yes, it is a cast iron mold shaped like small corn cobs. It's great for
dipping in soups and stews. The problem is the recipe for cornbread
makes more batter than for one 8 cast iron corn stick pan. I don't
really feel like standing in the kitchen making multiple batches of corn
sticks. I could buy another one, I suppose. But for tonight I'll just
make cornbread in the skillet and cut it into wedges.

or you could adjust the recipe to fit or buy a second
cast iron mold.

we don't have enough room here for storage of such
things that we'd hardly ever use.

I did say I suppose I could buy another one. I don't bake corn sticks
often enough to bother. And no, I'm not going to fiddle around trying
to adjust my cornbread recipe for that. The amount of batter fits my 9"
cast iron skillet perfectly. That skillet is never used for cooking
anything else.

I very rarely make corn sticks but the cast iron corn stick pan doesn't
take up much space; it stores easily in the drawer underneath the oven
along with the baking sheets.

I really have to make cornmeal mush again. I love it. My wife hates it.
It goes well with cheap margarine and Log Cabin syrup. :)

Yesterday was gross. Snow then rain then snow. Looks like it totaled
about 3 inches. I went out this morning and did the snowblowing on
nothing more than a bowl of oatmeal. Now we're all set for the deep
freeze arriving tonight. A couple days of lows around 0 F and highs
in the mid-teens.

It should get to 8 F on the day after. This thermonuclear winter has
been tough because Payday candy bars isn't exactly all that it seems but
I still dream.

there wasn't any rain up this direction but we did get
some of the snow that was forecast. luckily it wasn't
as much as the day before.

the wind blew enough that a lot of the snow was moved
for me that made shovelling go about 20 minutes less than
it would have been otherwise.

when i took the trash out this morning there's a little
new snow out there but the wind blew most of it away so i
don't really have to shovel much this morning. i will do
it because i like to have the driveway clear before the
snow gets driven on.

I like that, too. But I'll be satisfied with "mostly clear"
and let the sunlight hit the asphalt.
