Idaho/russet potatoes were on sale BOGO 10 lb bags, so we have a big pot
of potato soup simmering on the stove top this chilly evening. I pulled
a quart bag of home made stock from the freezer, but I don't remember if
it's beef or poultry. I guess it will be a surprise when the soup is
done. :)

That's a problem because, out of respect, you should always name a
soup after the dead animal you put in it.

Bruce's vegetarian agenda is tiresome. But perhaps Michael can call it
potato poultry soup or potato beef soup, depending upon what kind of
stock it turned out to be. ;)

I had filtered him for a long time but stopped after he took a noble
stand against some tea party tyrants in the RFC FaceBook page. I can
understand people leaving the group here because there is a small group
of people who are obsessed with being assholes, but when he left here
with those parting shots I figured there were some people who would be
pissed off.

He never took any parting shots at me, probably
because he had kill-filed me for years because I once
asked him what he had said to Ray Banana to permanently
ban him from motzarella / eternal-september.

Does anyone else recall? After that he ignored me of course.

Obfood: My fridge pickles have been steadily improving.
Batch 4 was 2 one litre jars. Jar 1 was broccoli + cauliflower
(boiled exactly 2 minutes then rinsed cold). Jar 2
was the manly medly of king oysters, (peeled) red bells,
and (peeled) english cucumbers sliced into triangular
prisms in order to slice off a seed sub-prism.
(i.e. The outer flesh forms trapezoidal cross sections.)
There were also some experimental 'flat' pea pods.

Spices: Mustard, turmeric, dell seed, coriander seed, nutmeg,
cloves, allspice, cinnamon bark.

I will do my next batch when I see some okra.
Does anyone have any advice on that?

He had one weakness: he combined too many strong flavours, as if his

ailments were real.

Have you not learned to label things you put in the freezer? IMO potato
soup is best made with chicken stock.

One would think I'd have learned by now, but I froze it some time ago.
I'm pretty sure that it was poultry stock. Either way, the soup turned
out well, and the kids asked for seconds.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the soup. Get yourself a marker and put the

Idaho/russet potatoes were on sale BOGO 10 lb bags, so we have
a big pot of potato soup simmering on the stove top this
chilly evening.  I pulled a quart bag of home made stock from
the freezer, but I don't remember if it's beef or poultry.  I
guess it will be a surprise when the soup is done.  :)
Have you not learned to label things you put in the freezer?  IMO
potato soup is best made with chicken stock.
Jill
One would think I'd have learned by now, but I froze it some time
ago. I'm pretty sure that it was poultry stock.  Either way, the
soup turned out well, and the kids asked for seconds.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the soup. Get yourself a marker and put
the date and contents on whatever you're freezing. Unless you prefer
guessing. ;)
Jill
Thin role of masking tape works to write on for most containers.
You should also add whether Don likes it or not.

Plain old Scotch tape works, too. Write the date & contents on it with
a Sharpie marker.

Sounds like what they did in the Az. and Pa. electoral fraud in '20...

I've got a vacuum sealer, and it produces a 'tail'
actually it's the top of the bag. Looking at this
picture I grabbed off the internet you can see the
top 'tail.' That's where I write the contents,
weight, and date I sealed it.

When I cut the bag open, that written 'tail' goes
in the garbage and the bag can be used again after
it's washed.

Yes, I do that on my vacuum-sealed stuff.
But some things get packed in square, stackable storage boxes, and the
blue masking tape works well on them.

I have a sealer too and cut the bags long to be able to do that. Then
masking tape which comes off easier. To dry, just put the baggie open
over a coffee mug or something.

Why use masking tape? Just write the contents on that
portion to be cut off. But yes, I make my bags super
long to be able to use them again and again. They're
draped over a long barbecue tool that is propped up
in the dish drainer to hold them open while they're
drying.

It may be my bags or markers but they tend to wipe the writing off, so
masking tape. I have a lot of masking tape left over from some
painting jobs.

It took me years to get my wife to stop writing with permanent markers
on Rubbermaid containers. I don't always use the same stuff. There are
things we binge on for a while and then stop using. Better to use tape
or labels that can be removed. If the tap or label falls off the stuff
has probably been there too long.

I would never use a marker of any kind on a Rubbermaid
or any reusable container. I've got some freezer tape,
but I've never used it as I just use the vacuum bags.

Same thoughts here. Anyways, works on bags and rubbermaid etc. It's
just simple.

When we moved back stateside, the house was a wreak. Estimated 80.000$
worth damage by insurance comany, but Don and I were healthy then and
handy so did most of it ourselves. That's where the excess masking
tape comes from. I guess we are sort of 'waste not, want not' people.
We find simple reusable things all the time.

Right now my handy task is trying to get seedlings properly established
and that means better seedling pots than I tried last year (too small).
These are all food crops. I want my Cubanelles and Chocolate Bell
Peppers dagnabbit! ;-)

I'm going to try the containers I get with my instant coffee (Hill's
Bro's and International or maybe it was Constant Comment?) as one set
is definately big enough for Bell Pepper sraters and the other will be
fine for herb seedlings. Looking at peanut butter jars as well. Some
of the yogurt (6oz) or sourcream (8oz) ones would do well. Ah well,
that's my planned veggies for the table next year!

Oh ok. I use Sharpie markers and once I write on the
tail of any bag, it's permanent.

Idaho/russet potatoes were on sale BOGO 10 lb bags, so we have a big pot
of potato soup simmering on the stove top this chilly evening. I pulled
a quart bag of home made stock from the freezer, but I don't remember if
it's beef or poultry. I guess it will be a surprise when the soup is
done. :)
It was a Mexican pinwheel from my neighbor that was
my supper tonight.

I'm not familiar with a "Mexican pinwheel". Browser lookup makes it
sound like some sort of appetitizer. Could you elaborate?

It was made using a large flour tortilla, a blend of
"Mexican cheese," salsa, garlic, and I forgot what
else she said it had in it. It is then rolled up
and sliced into pinwheels.

No, the recommendation was to let it sit for a while
so the flavors could meld.

My wife cooked tonight. She made a Greek style marinade and chunked up
some chicken to throw into it for a while. Later in she cooked it in the
cast iron grill pan and served it tiziki, Greek salad and a grilled
pita. It was great.
