i do have things to chat about yet it will have to
wait until tomorrow, but this evening was great because
i finally got Mom to leave the dishes on the counter
instead of piling them in the sink.

saves me a lot of time and detergent/bleach water if
i can do it myself, etc.

progress is nice when it happens. :)

if your answer contains things like "dishwashing
machine" or "someone else" you can skip on the reply
because you're not talking about the same thing and
you could just instead be whistlin' dixie...

When I washed dishes by hand, I favored a double sink or a single
sink with a dishpan, with a running-water rinse in the hottest
water my hands could tolerate. Then into the drying rack to
air dry. Naturally it was better if someone didn't randomly
fill the sink or dishpan with dishes, since flatware and glasses
came first, then dishes, then pots and pans.

Now I usually just put some dish soap on a paper towel to
clean sharp knives or whatever won't fit in the dishwasher.

Yep. Other than the fancy knives, certain non-stick pans, and the rare
*too big* item, everything goes in the dishwasher. In 1992, we moved
back to StL from FL, and we had enough cash to buy two appliances, so we
bought a washer and dishwasher, and for the next 7 years we had no
clothes dryer. That was OK because our apartment had a large, private
basement, so I just put up clotheslines. That was way better than doing
dishes by hand.

Disinfectant. Only a very tiny amount needed, only a percent or two.

We know that, but why would he need to disinfect his own dishes?

i don't use bleach when i'm washing the dishes but
Mom will sometimes squirt bleach in things she leaves
in the sink to be washed because she doesn't like the
smell and so she prefers to smell bleach.

i use bleach (cut with water) as a deoderant or to
kill off microbes.

If dishes are rinsed and to be washed later, there
will be no smell. It's when food is left on dishes
that they begin to smell. No, I don't know by
personal experience, I know it from a lazy guy
I knew who would do this. Then he'd complain
HOW HARD IT WAS TO GET THAT DRIED ON FOOD OFF
HIS DISHES. He wasn't the brightest, for sure.

I used to use a little bleach when 'washing as I go' but can't now. I
had a problem (excema) come out due to overuse of hand sanitizer. The
Dermatologist told me it's genetic related allergies and may stay
dormant until something sets it off. Apparently she kept quite busy
with the issue during covid.

I now have to be very careful with any scented products and all sorts
of odd things. Raw chicken! I have to wear gloves or it burns. LOL,
just a wierd thing to have happen. Under control now but still there
and once woken, the allergy never really goes away.

I also have eczema, and I can't tolerate any kind of hand sanitizer.
Sometimes I really had to fight people off pushing sanitizer during
COVID. No, I'm not going to trash my already painful skin by applying
alcohol to it multiple times daily.

I limit the use of beach to laundry, and try to keep my hands in it as
briefly as possible. When a eczema flare up comes on, almost no topical
ointment helps.

I found cerave to be the best but don't use the aunti-itch as it sets
off bad itching. I used the cream and the vasoline types. Right now
in remission thank goodness.

All has a brand thats super 'free-n-clear' or something like that name,
which is used for laundry here or my socks set it off on the bottom of
my feet.

Ah well, I use gloves to protect my hands when cooking some things,
leave dishes now to Don. Making turkey soup, had them on to get the
skin off and another pair to debone it.

Ahh... those lovely corona times! I remember I was attacked outside for
not wearing a mask. A guy tried to hit me with a shopping bag full with

I told him some naughty words and said I had a medical condition (which I
had) and after a 20 second silence he said "ok" and left.

Yep, corona exposed a scary pack mentality that showed that people at
large are only way too happy to repeat what they did in nazi germany. It
is my belief that we could easily have ended up with concentration camps
for people who rightly did not want to wear a meaningless mask or
vaccinate themselves, and the public at large would have cheered on the
camp guards. =(

Of course, but not as big a problem as cshenkie. She faints when she's

Scented products are hard on me, also. There are few I can use. Most
laundry soaps and scents are a no-go. The only soap that's worked well
for me is a budged Mexican brand of powder soap, called "Foca". It
comes in a blue bag with a baby seal on it. Our water is soft, so a
little bit of soap goes a long way.

Funny, raw meats don't bother my hands, but potatoes are the *worse*.
My hands are so painfully itchy after dicing up potatoes if I'm not
rather careful.

I don't wear rubber gloves, I find them clunky and difficult to work in.
Either way, I don't put bleach in my dishwater, so it's not an issue
for me. I only use a little bit of Dawn soap, which is one of the only
things I won't buy off-brand. It's easy on the skin and, and apparently
the baby ducks too, heh.

alcohol to it multiple times daily.
Do you have a problem wearing rubber dish washing gloves?
I don't wear rubber gloves, I find them clunky and difficult to work in.
You could try single-use surgical gloves, which ate not
clunky; come in several hand sizes and large boxes, and
you can get hypo-allergenic ones. Used by medics with
sensitive skin. Not expensive, we use them a lot for
painting, varnishing etc.

Yup, even the new head of the DNC agrees, lol...!!!

From The New York Times:

Democrats Don’t Have a Shortcut Out of the Wilderness

"The weakened condition of the Democratic Party leaves it ill prepared
to defend itself against a Republican Party determined to eviscerate
liberalism and the left...

Evidence of the fraught state of the party can be found everywhere...

Pew Research asked Democrats and Republicans whether they were
optimistic or pessimistic about the future of their party after the five
presidential and midterm elections from 2016 to 2024. Republicans in
2024 were more optimistic, 86-13, than after any of the previous four
contests, including Donald Trump’s 2016 victory...

Among Democrats, optimism fell to 51 percent, while pessimism rose to 49
percent, well below the 61-38 for Democrats after the 2016 election...

Ken Martin, the chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party
and a leading candidate to become chairman of the Democratic National
Committee, acknowledged this erosion of political clout in a memo to
party leaders:

"...For the first time in modern history, the perception that Americans
have of the two major political parties switched. The majority of
Americans now believes that the Republican Party best represents the
interests of the working class and the poor, and that the Democratic
Party is the party of the wealthy and the elites. It’s a damning
indictment on our party brand..."

Poor Graham should prepare to BEND OVER come 20 January - and take his
BUGGERY like a MAN...!!!

Not statistically significant. Sample size too small. Sample not

About 7% of American adults have eczema. Same thing for Australia

I use the gloves like at the Doctor's office when handling irritants.
All these Americans with their sensitivities. I bet it's the xanthan
gum!
Not statistically significant. Sample size too small. Sample not
randomly selected.
About 7% of American adults have eczema. Same thing for Australia
and The Netherlands.
But maybe those statistics don't know about Michael. After all, he
doesn't use Google.
It's possible those statistics don't know about Michael, since they
derive from data obtained by doctors.

I now have to be very careful with any scented products and all sorts
of odd things.  Raw chicken!  I have to wear gloves or it burns.  LOL,
just a wierd thing to have happen.  Under control now but still there
and once woken, the allergy never really goes away.
Scented products are hard on me, also. There are few I can use. Most
laundry soaps and scents are a no-go. The only soap that's worked well
for me is a budged Mexican brand of powder soap, called "Foca". It
comes in a blue bag with a baby seal on it. Our water is soft, so a
little bit of soap goes a long way.
yep, we use that too. it's about the only laundry
detergent we can tolerate.

Funny, raw meats don't bother my hands, but potatoes are the *worse*.
My hands are so painfully itchy after dicing up potatoes if I'm not
rather careful.
potatoes have some toxins in them. i can't eat
raw potatoes, it would be a bad day...

raw meats don't bother my hands, but i don't like
the smell of meat or grease. if you've been vegetarian
for any length of time you do notice smells that other
people won't.

a little bleach in some water will deodorise plastics
which often have smells clinging to them. i prefer to
cook, eat and store foods in/on glass or enamelled things
which don't have that problem. once you wash them well
enough with dish soap (we dilute that too) they don't
have any smell clinging to them.

It's very gentle on baby stuff. My favorite part, it costs so little.
You have to use warm or hot water, of course, for powdered detergent.

solanine is the name of the toxin, other foods can also do this
(peppers, tomatoes). "plant family Solanaceae which includes
the genus Solanum (nightshade, tomato, potato); Nicotiana
(belladonna, jimsonweed, tobacco); and Capsicum (including hot
peppers and bell)."

i would like to, but Mom has issues with getting things
open so some plastic containers work better for her. just
trying to get her to not use them for reheating things is
a challenge. if she wants mixed vegetables from the freezer
she'll heat them up right in the plastic bag which makes me
shudder. lol i hate the smells that cling to plastic and
also cardboard, i've found that most of the freezer smell
that really gets me to gag is from the cardboard packaging.

I also have eczema, and I can't tolerate any kind of hand sanitizer.
Sometimes I really had to fight people off pushing sanitizer during
COVID.  No, I'm not going to trash my already painful skin by
applying alcohol to it multiple times daily.
Do you have a problem wearing rubber dish washing gloves?
I don't wear rubber gloves, I find them clunky and difficult to work in.
Either way, I don't put bleach in my dishwater, so it's not an issue
for me.  I only use a little bit of Dawn soap, which is one of the only
things I won't buy off-brand.  It's easy on the skin and, and apparently
the baby ducks too, heh.
Then the answer is, you don't wear dish washing gloves. :) I surely
hope you didn't think the question was "snarky". Heh. I don't use
bleach when washing dishes, either. Can't imagine why anyone would. I
use Dawn. It cuts the grease well and is mild on the skin.

there are many versions of Dawn, some of them include rather
harsh and nasty chemicals along with fragrances. when you are
sensitive to fragrances and various chemicals it often makes
things much worse to throw complications into the mix.

we've tried various dish detergents and some are much worse
than others. i don't wear gloves as i do not react to them
but Mom has problems with her skin reacting and her fingernails
splitting, and also the fragrances.

i don't soak in the bleachwater or use a lot of it, perhaps
a tablespoon of dillute bleach, i rinse off and wash my hands
quite frequently even when washing dishes so i'm not doing much
damage to anything. i do most of the dishes here now anyways
so that is reducing how much bleach is getting used on the
dishes.

What snark? It looked like a legitimate question to me. A negative
reaction to wearing gloves would be a good reason not to wear them.

proscribes said snark.

Just curious why you add bleach when handwashing
dishes...
i don't use bleach when i'm washing the dishes but
Mom will sometimes squirt bleach in things she leaves
in the sink to be washed because she doesn't like the
smell and so she prefers to smell bleach.
i use bleach (cut with water) as a deoderant or to
kill off microbes.

I've said this before and I understand it's problematic but perhaps it's
time you stopped letting your mother rule the roost. Inhaling bleach
fumes in dish water is not a good thing.

It's used in small amounts, helps cut grease and sanitize. Nothing
special, 1/2 cap in a 1/2 full sink. I used it in the soaking water
side of the sink.

One of my essentials is a very small dish rack, just right to sit in
one of the 2 sides or then sink or can be placed on a towel beside it.
That way I can have one with hot soapy water, one with rinse, stack
then when done, put the rack in the sink (out of the way) as it dries.

At the time when I got it, small ones like that were very hard to find.
I'm not sure if they are common now.

I may use a machine most of the time (we take 1 load every other day)
but it's nice when in 'wash as you go' times hit!

Why? Because I find it easier. There are only a few dishes to be done so
it doesn't take much time. I have lots of dishes and cutlery but few
pots, so I have do them anyway. It takes the same amount of water and it
only takes a couple minutes more to do the dishes.

I suppose there is a chance that it isn't easier but that doesn't matter
because as long as I think it is easier it is easier. That's all I need
to know.

dishwasher when storage space is at a premium.
yes, we also have a small house with limited space and
any taken up by a dishwasher would be wasted. i enjoy
doing dishes, but i enjoy doing them even more when i'm
able to get them done with as little effort and resources
as possible.

We don't have a big kitchen, but the loss of one base cabinet
for the gain of a dishwasher is worth it. That one cabinet
represents 20% of the available space for base cabinets in
our kitchen.

It was 25% of the space before we moved the fridge into the
dining room and installed a cabinet next to the stove, where
the fridge used to be. That also enabled us to get a bigger
fridge. I hated that little old side-by-side; the bottom-freezer
with which we replaced it enables us to use a sheet tray of
stuff (like containers of soup) for freezing.
