Last week was my birthday so my granddaughter bought me a Sacher-torte.
There is some story behind it so she knew I'd appreciate it. Some years
ago I bought one as a special treat for my wife so it is not just a
cake, it is full of memories.

It is chocolate, but not overly sweet, nothing at all like the typical
chocolate cake you'd make or at the corner bakery. The whipped cram
rounds out the flavor.

“Oh, that he may not discredit me tonight!” – These words of Prince
Metternich of Austria marked the beginning of the story of the Original
Sacher-Torte in 1832. The court of Prince Metternich had requested a
dessert for a special occasion, but the chef was ill at the time, so
16-year-old apprentice Franz Sacher filled in. The cake he created could
not have been more delicious.
The Original Sacher-Torte is still hand-made using Franz Sacher’s
original recipe to this day, and is best enjoyed with a dollop of
unsweetened whipped cream. (Chocolate) dreams do come true!

Sacher Torte is a real treat. My DiL is off to a conference in Vienna in
about two weeks and my son is going along for the ride. We was thrilled
when they first planned it and he was looking forward to real Wiener
Schnitzel, apple strudel, great cakes and other great German cooking
but he has since been diagnosed celiac and has to stick to gluten free.

It was his birthday tonight and he came over for supper. I went to the
corner to get desserts and made sure to order a variety of gluten free.
They had three GF desserts so I got one of each, a macron, GF brownie
and a poached pear tart and tried a piece the brownie. They were all
well received.
