I suffer from GERD, and take a generic Prilosec 2x a day to keep it in
check.

However, I noticed a couple of weeks ago that every time I ate boiled
cabbage (from my corned beef dinner) I didn't experience the heartburn
like usual. This was the same story when I made a big pot of Bigos
this weekend. It seems that the absurd amount of cabbage in that stew
kills GERD for several hours after I eat it.

Anyone else notice this with cabbage or other foods?

If this is the case, I think I'm going to try to eat cabbage daily. I
like it, it's pretty inexpensive, and I don't get any side effects
from it. I know that a lot of people say it gives them gas, but it
doesn't do that to me. (And neither do beans. Such a
disappointment).

It seems better to eat a vegetable than to take a pill for things, no?

Cabbage contains a lot of sulphur which aids the stomach and digestive
tract. If you suffer from GERD you
probably don't have enough HCL in your stomach and the cabbage
probably helps.

Have you thought about juicing cabbage? It's used a lot to help with
digestive problems.

Hot Buffalo wings relieve my GERD. The cayenne pepper (Durkee Red Hot)
acts as an anesthetic. Spaghetti and mild wings are a killer for me.

DING DING DING!!!! Doctors *assume* GERD is caused by too much acid when in
many cases it is caused by too little. So what do they prescibe? Acid
lowering drugs!

I love cabbage and pear juice. I juice one whole cabbage and one small
pear. It tastes GREAT! And my tummy loves it.

It's extremely gay to call your stomach your "tummy" if you're a man.

Does it make you fart a lot?

That's what we called it on my last expedition to the Congo where after a
grueling 90 day canoe trip all but 2 of my Namibian guides were killed by
giant tarantulas, I wrestled a 50 foot python to the death with just my wits
and bare hands. Afterwards we feasted on its flesh then smoked cigars and
drank whiskey under the vast African sky with happy tummies all around.

GERD has to be caused by something. It's not the natural state. Most
likely it is caused by something you eat almost all of the time and
never considered it might be hamring you. I went wheat free never
considering it anything other than fattening and suddenly my cough
caused by constant GERD went away.

I did notice that certain foods turned it off unitl the next meal.

Absolutely. Have you tried other cabbage family foods? Brocolli and so
on.

Alternatively, it could be caused by a hiatal hernia, as it is for my
husband and two children.

Cabbage juice seems to be a traditional treatment for acid reflux. Try
the other cruciferous vegs and see if they work as well. Cabbage every
day could get a little dull maybe.

And it's not the greatest for some people's thyroids if it's raw.

Cabbage is a wonderful food for the stomach. It calms the spasms, digests
easily and soothes the colon. Plus it is a wonderful source of fiber. You
should try cabbage juice with pear as a digestive tonic. I love cabbage as
it really helps my weak digestion. It's amazing what it can do.
