My granddaughter went on a charter fishing trip on the Gulf of Mexico
today. She caught a few but only kept one fish. Red Snapper has a
limited season. They are also bottom feeders so the line was dropped
180 feet to snag this one.

This was the largest caught so she won the pool. Most were less that
half the size. It is 32" and weighs about 20 pounds.

So far, I have one fillet for tomorrow and I'll get more tomorrow to
freeze. My job in this was to take her to the boat at 4AM today and
pick her up when they got back at 5PM.

Yay! Is this the daughter with disabilities? It's good that you are taking
care of her; I think she is also taking care of you too!

It doesn't get any better than that.

Red Snapper is pretty good eating.

What does red snapper taste like? Is it comparable to any well known

It's similar to rockfish, a flaky white met, not too firm but not too
soft. Fillets up easily and is not too strong a taste. Primarily a reef
structure fish also found by wrecks.

Red snapper is a fine textured, mild white meat with a distinctive sweet
flavor. Snapper is a versatile fish that can be sautéed, baked, roasted,
grilled, fried, and broiled.

Just the one season on the Weather Channel, might be some torrents out
in the wild yet.

I recall they were getting $15-20 a fish from seafood restaurants along
the coast, not bad until you start adding up the cost of fuel.

Really? Last time I was in the US the weather channel was about weather!
;) You guys are innovating at such a fast pace that it makes me all
confused!

One weird reality show I heard about in sweden was called "the neighbour
feud" and consisted of the TV finding retarded villages far, far from
civilization where two neighbours enjoyed shooting at each other with
hunting rifles.

Then they tried to provoke them into giving the best possible show for the
viewers. I wonder if it came from the US, or if the idea would be a great
success in the US?

That's almost 'Running Man' in its incarnate evil.

Once upon a time we had a film that may have foreshadowed all this:

1932...even in that vastly different era savagery sold just fine.

Ahh... did they also replace regular warm weather on the maps with
glaring, bright red in the US? In europe, to stoke climate fear, they
changed the coloring of the weather maps the past 20 years or so. When I
was young, the map looked nice and faded to yellow and orange during
summer.

Today, the same temperatures fade into bright screaming red to reinforce
the illusion that the planet will die tomorrow.

Interesting! Never heard of.

There is also the Japanese book (or perhaps movie as well?) Battle
Royale on a similar theme. But there it is high school children who
fight it out on a remote island.

When I was a kid, Dad and I fished for red snapper off of Bodega Bay.
When I got older, I learned that there are no red snapper in the Pacific
Ocean. We caught red rockfish. They had super nasty spines on their
back. I fell on a gunny sack full of them once. I've never had red snapper.
Nice fish, by the way! Congratulate your granddaughter for me.
Oh...and you're a good grandpa. She owed you the fillets for the taxi
time. ;)

She is my favorite. When she first moved to FL she lived with me a
while until she bought a trailer and is now four miles down the road.
Walking distance to work. I'm still her wheels, but she always does
little things for me. There are always flowers on my coffee table from
taking her shopping.

until she bought a trailer and is now four miles down the road. Walking
distance to work. I'm still her wheels, but she always does little things
for me. There are always flowers on my coffee table from taking her
shopping.
That's nice. Makes you wonder, perhaps I should get a child? On the other
hand, with all the horror stories I've heard through the years based on
poop, puke and nastiness, I think you need to be very lucky (or very
skilled) to get nice children like that. ;)

She owed you the fillets for the taxi
time. ;)

I didn't know about her visual impairment either. I thought she might
be one of those people who don't like to drive. When I was young I
could not wait to drive. I had so much trouble waiting that I once got
caught driving without a license. I have people in my family who don't
like to drive. My brother's late wife did not get a license until she
was in her 40s and she never liked driving. Big niece has a license but
never drivers. A nephew did not get his license until he was in his 30s
and almost never drives. He told me he hates driving and is much happier
to sit in a passenger seat and read. I don't understand it.

I had to push my son to get his license. I knew that the government was
preparing to go with a graduated licensing system that would mean it
would take a lot longer to get a license and that there would be a lot
of restrictions on new drivers. He used to drive our car until he left
home. He went to Africa for a while, came back for university here then
transferred to Montreal. He relied on public transportation. Later on
he moved to Toronto and again relied on public transportation. He moved
back this way and finally bought a car when he was 34.

True, some people don't like to drive so they never get their license.
Or never needed to. My maternal grandmother never learned to drive a
car. But hey, she was born in 1896, in the days of horse & buggy. She
probably knew how to drive a buggy. After they emigrated to the U.S.
she never needed or wanted to learn to drive a car. Grandpa drove the
car. The grocery store was in walking distance.

I wanted to get my license but my father wouldn't let me. Everyone I
went to school with (and my brothers) got their licenses at 16. It
wasn't until I turned 18 and the legal age was 18 that I said to my
mother, I'm going to the DMV to get my drivers license and Dad can't
stop me. She said, "But you don't know how to drive!" Of course I did.
I had a friend from school named Darin who had his license and a VW
Bug. 3-speed, standard transmission. He'd pick me up and we'd go to
some neighborhoods where they had put in the streets but had not yet
built houses. Darin taught me how to drive. I said, "Mom, I'm going."
She said "Okay. Let me take you. But you have to learn to drive my
[automatic transmission] car first." That took about a day and we went
and I got my license. It wasn't until a couple of years later I bought
my first car. I went with the standard shift, though. ;)
I had to push my son to get his license. I knew that the government was

I grew up in the suburbs. No public transportation to speak of. Where
I live now, still no public transporation to speak of. No stores within
walking distance and I'm certainly not within walking distance to work.

Sorry, Ed. No criticism of your thoughtful granddaughter was intended!

No offense taken. You'd never know if you were not told is was a fake.
She does everything well and does ride a bike.

In her teens, she was with the family at Disney and in line for a ride.
Somehow, she tripped and fell down forward. When she got up, she held
her hand out and said "my eye popped out" The woman behind her nearly
passed out.

So far, I have one fillet for tomorrow and I'll get more tomorrow to
freeze.  My job in this was to take her to the boat at 4AM today and
pick her up when they got back at 5PM.

When she first moved to FL she lived with me a
while until she bought a trailer and is now four miles down the
road. Walking distance to work.  I'm still her wheels, but she
always does little things for me.  There are always flowers on my
coffee table from taking her shopping.
Nice! although I find it interesting, in this day and age, she
doesn't drive.

Visually impaired implies the person is disfigured or butt ugly!
Pardon me, Dr. Grammar. I didn't know she couldn't see, is that better?

180 feet to snag this one.

I had the red snapper tonight. Cooked it on the grill, seasoned with
salt, pepper, garlic. One the plate, a squeeze of lemon. Flavor is very
mild.

I'm getting more so will be doing it again. I'll try some other ways
too, it would be good pan fried or with a light sauce.

started talking about my vagina the minute his pal Bryan asked about the
word "snapper". But Bryan actually controlled himself and didn't
immediately jump to a sexual connotation. He asked a legitimate
question: why the fish is called snapper.

There's an easy solution for you, block Greg AND me.
I never see Greg or his garbage except when you repost
it.
I don't want to block you but  if you keep reposting troll
filth about Jill, then I will killfile you.
   Janet UK
Have at it, there's no anchor tied to your ass keeping
you from blocking me or anyone else here.
Joan, what has you so angry?  We all know GM is an asshole and he started
talking about my vagina the minute his pal Bryan asked about the word
"snapper".  But Bryan actually controlled himself and didn't immediately
jump to a sexual connotation.  He asked a legitimate question: why the fish
is called snapper.
Jill
Please let her slide this time, your Majesty. Everyone has a bad day every
now and then. Soon enough, she will probably feel bad and apologize.
Thank you.

Jill, let's be charitable here. I think the topic of your vagina was
raised due to simple curiousity. You making it such a mystery of course
heightens the curiosity, so you're only making it worse by not engaging.

This is a froup hungry for some gray snapper is all I can discern...

Perhaps its other name "Mangrove snapper" would be more in keeping.

Let me just add for the benefit of the people late to the conversation:

Snapper (Lutjanidae family) - they are known for their excellent taste and
can be caught using various methods.

Lol... I bet she alrady does...

"Just for the record", I have killfiled both Smith and WITCH Janet UK,
as they are both one - note lamers and I'm not wasting time reading
their bilge...

I do see their natterings quoted, but I'd never *demand* that another

I might point out - as I've done ISTR with Joan - that the "newest"
poster popping up is just antother casa boner sock puppet, but I'm not
DEMANDING that anyone stop replying to it...

As "dsi1" has sometimes said, "lotsa crybabies here"...

It doesn't make sense. Joan & I have very nice food discussions here
and I consider her a friend, yet she reposts his filth. She seems to
think if she asks him to he'll stop. He's not going to stop as long as
his assinine comments are quoted and he gets attention. He's very much
like John Kuthe in that regard.

say the devil sits on your shoulder sometimes.  He seems

If Jill bothers you THAT much, she's easily blocked on

The Moron is easily blocked too, but you seem to like to indulge him by
responding to his attention seeking bullshit. That serves only to
encourage his nonsense.
I agree with that, Dave. Joan replies all the time to GM's ridiculous
posts (why he's obsessed with my vagina is a mystery) and all that does
is encourage him.

If you only consider ex - post, you run the risk of people hiding their

"The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has
been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was
to destroy the devil’s work..."

To quote Star Wars... "there is still good in you", "I can feel the

Does anyone know why they're called snappers?
I thought "snapper" was a slang term for the female vagina...
As in: "Jill has a useless dried - up old snapper"...

For once, a decent conversation until you added this stupidity.
Greg, you can do better than this, you're not 14 years old and
we don't need a class clown.

And yet we're instructed that:

Revelation 20:3
ESV - 3 And threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him,
so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand
years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

Revelation 20:7-10 The Message (MSG)
When the thousand years are up, Satan will be let loose from his cell,
and will launch again his old work of deceiving the nations, searching
out victims in every nook and cranny of earth, even Gog and Magog! He’ll
talk them into going to war and will gather a huge army, millions
strong. They’ll stream across the earth, surround and lay siege to the
camp of God’s holy people, the Beloved City. They’ll no sooner get there
than fire will pour out of Heaven and burn them up. The Devil who
deceived them will be hurled into Lake Fire and Brimstone, joining the
Beast and False Prophet, the three in torment around the clock for ages
without end.

Well...they do snap...

But even more tasty and fun to eat is the striped grunt:
