In the big cities, sometimes people do end up dead taking a parking spot
someone else cleared the snow.

That's sure nice of you Master. Americans would never do that. We'd whip

Wow. That is extreme rage. My neighbour used to be a pain in the ass
about the snow removal. We live in a shared road allowance. He had a
tractor with a snow blower but would not come out and clean up the lane
until after I got home from work and cleaned from our parking area to
the road. He worked steady midnights so he was home all day, and his
wife was back and forth during the day and had to drive through the snow.
I would get home and clean out my end and as soon as I was finished he
would come out and start up the tractor. He had to go past my place to
turn around, but no way he would go out and to it before I did my share.

He didn't like that I piled the snow at the corner of the parking area
so he would drive along my lawn and through the pile of snow. Easy
enough to do when the snow is fresh and cold. I would go out and clean
up the mess he made and the next time he went out in his truck he would
do it again. One very cold night I went a couple time and hour with a
couple pails of water that I poured on top the the snow pile.

The next day I got home from work and I could see fresh tire tracks in
the snow, well off the lane and on my lawn and right up to the frozen
solid snow covered ice. He must have been doing a pretty good clip
because the back wheels had bounced over about a foot to one side and
there was a line of rusty bits that had come off his bumper when he hit
that solid pile.

I am betting that he was pretty pissed about the damage he did to his
truck but there wasn't a heck of a lot he could say since he was on my
property and trying to do mischief.

What a difference between him and the guy who bought the place when he
moved out. The new neighbour would go out and clean up the snow as soon
it stopped, and before it stopped if it was getting deep, if our parking
area was empty he would clean it out or us.

Would have been fun to watch him. Only takes one idiot on the street.

When I lived in CT the nearby neighbors helped each other.

When I was a teenager still living at home, my brother and I used to
park in front of the house and there was a good 50 yards of street in
front of us and no houses. A guy decided to park in our spot. It was
still freezing and pouring water over the glass was a fun project. He
never parked there again.

I should have done that when we lived in a small apartment. There were
four apartments, upper and lower on each side and driveways to each side
and each was a shared driveway with the neighbouring buildings.  We had
three young women living above us and a car each. I used to shovel our
half of the shared drive. The people next door never shovelled theirs
and the women upstairs  parked in the part I had shoveled. I wish I had
thought of the ice thing then.
Just remembered an incident from the year I worked on a plow crew. The
south end of our patrol area was a snow belt and there was interchange
at the northern end of that belt and there was a stretch of open farm
land and was prone to heavy drifting. I came to work for the afternoon
shift and it was snowing pretty hard. When we plowed that intersection
there was already a huge snowbank and we had to go to some effort to
push it over a little more and then raise the wing plow to knock the top
over a little further. We had to make a couple passes.  We were back
that way around 5 am and the snow had stopped so we could see a lot
better. As we went over the bridge my wingman told me to stop and
pointed out the car that we had unknowingly build a wall around.
Apparently there was a brand new Caddilac behind a snow bank about 10ft
wide and 10 feet high. It must have been a heck of a job to get it out.
Dave, you should have keyed that new caddy before enclosing it in snow.
Would have made a better memory for you.

Nah, that's not good enough. Collect a bunch of trash and mix it with
garbage and dump it on top of the car. Officer Dave will beam with pride.

For extra effects, smear a little shit on the guy's windows and door
handles when you're done.

Also, go back and urinate on that pile of snow. The yellow streaks will
help him understand you better. If you're still not sure he'll get your
message, breakout a couple of windows and piss all over his seats.

SEIZE the MISCREANT and SEND the PUKE to the slave labour camps that the
US is going to open in GREENLAND...

I must say Trump's vision for Greenland and the Panama Canal is
exciting...!!!

Gen Z is whining they can't afford houses and health care. Well, this
country was not founded to provide health care to able bodied adults. I
never thought about a doctor until I hit 50...

We do need something to revive our pioneering spirit. Developing
Greenland, with thousands of fortunes to be made, and running the Canal
and ousting the Chinese from Panama are real goals I hope Trump is
successful in doing...

Personally, I would have shoveled the snow *on to* their car. Maybe a
cold glass of water on the windshield, for a nice added touch. Either
way, I'm glad to have off-street parking.

Funny thing about on street parking is that, while people like to park
in front of their own houses, they don't own the space and have no
special rights to the spaces. It's first come first serve.

There was a funny incident at a party I went to a few years ago. A
friend who had just arrived had just been hassled for parking on the
street a couple doors down from the party. The home owner didn't want
her to park there because she was disabled and someone was coming to
pick her up. Our friend said she was so angry she almost took off her
(prosthetic) leg and threw it at the woman. Our friend had lost her leg
in a bicycling accident. She was more disabled than the woman who was
whining.

This is true, but it's still annoying as hell.

When I was working and on the T-F-S night shift the couple
across the street would have frequent get togethers on
Saturday night. I'm talking about 5, 6, 7 cars parked
here and there and yes, always 2-3 in front of my house.
They had two cars, so the parking spots in front of their
own house was claimed by them. I would get home about
1:00 a.m., maybe earlier and I'd end up parking in the
alley running down the side of my property. This was
before I had a carport, and I didn't want to park a
block away.

When I have to park in a street like that, I always look for a more
neutral parking spot, not one that clearly "belongs" to a particular
house.

I heard a biologist say that polar bears are the losers of the bear
family. That's why they've been forced to live in a cold climate. Do
you think the same applies to people?

Obviously he misunderstood. The losers of the bear
family are the lazy vegetarians (like pandas and koalas
and Bruce) Their picky and limited diet stunts their
brain/body development and social skills and they are
utterly reliant on one food species. If eucalyptus and
bamboo disappear, so do koalas and pandas.

POlar bears on the other had are huge fast energetic
carnivores with highly developed IQ. They are the largest
land carnivore, can live and hunt on land or water,
wherever the food source is and can hunt catch and eat
anything; fish, seals, humans.

Polar bear skin is pure black. You probably don't know
that and just made a bad guess based on the fur.

I mention this as a true fact for any rfc posters who
value accuracy.

There were Panda bears on loan to the Memphis Zoo for a while. The only
thing they eat is bamboo; tons of it You're right, if bamboo disappears
so do the Pandas (which used to be on the endangered species list until
conservation efforts turned things around, at least temporarily). Ditto
the Koalas.

Damn, there you go again telling the truth! Now you've disrupted the
order of the universe (and some lame attempts to bring up racism). Yes,
Polar bear skin is black to absorb the heat from the sun. Their fur
isn't actually white, either. It's translucent and scatters light.

If you want to be picayune, the index of refraction of polar
bear hair is such that light carrying lower-energy photons (i.e.
infra-red 'heat') experience more internal reflection and are thus
conducted down to the root *instead* of being scattered along
with higher-energy but much less numerous visible photons.

(Sunlight follows the 'Wien Law' black-body radiation curve.)

I suppose it is pretty to look at. We were in Washington state when they
had an early snow. The people freaked. I don't know why - they've seen
snow before. A lot of them have Viking blood flowing through their
veins. What the heck? My sister-in-law kept going on and on about
different ways of getting up to a church on a hill. We rented a big-ass
SUV with 4WD. Evidently, a big-ass SUV with 4WD is all you need to get
up a big-ass slippery hill in the snow. My son drove. I ain't driving in
no snow!

I remember a news story many years ago where two couples went
out in their new 4WD SUV on an icy road in their hometown.
They slid off that icy road and down an embankment into a
creek. All four drowned.

Just three or four years ago it made the news where a mother
in her 4WD SUV was found in an icy creek with her less than
one year old daughter strapped in her car seat. The SUV had
flipped and slid down an embankment onto its' roof and the
Mother had drowned and baby was alive but was in a state of
hypothermia but did recover.

There was a news story up here a number of years ago that was really
heart wrenching. A woman had slid off a road into an irrigation and her
infant was in the back seat. I forget the exact details but the initial
report was about her sliding into the canal and then frantically calling
for help as the car filled with water. As the story developed and the
cell call was released it turned out that the driver had been on the
phone with her friend and telling how bad the roads where. Instead of
hanging up and concentrating on driving she stayed in the line to tell
her friend about the bad conditions, about sliding into the canal, about
the car filling with water, about her infant stuck in the back. FFS,
somewhere along the way she should have hung up the phone and done
something constructive.

My friend's ex once slid off the road in the rain in Santa Barbara. Her
car went down a hill and stopped on the bank of a river. She had to
climb up the hillside while holding her baby to get help. Later on,
while she was talking to the police by the river, another car went off
the road at the same spot. It must have been traveling pretty fast
because it flew over her and the cop's heads. It crashed/destroyed her
car and both cars went down the river. The elderly couple in the car
were killed. Hopefully, they had a good life together. Life - it's just
so random.

I had a 4Motion VW that was a full time 4WD system. I never needed it
ever. I suppose you don't ever need it until you need it. I was
surprised that the front tires wore like a FWD car i.e., most of the
wear was on the front tires. It's a mystery to ponder - or not.

Most of these cars belong to city people and never see a speck of
dust. Often a tiny woman comes out, of a type that you could fit 30 in
that car of.

Trouble is that people get too cocky driving their 4WD vehicle, and
forget that it's just as slick on ice as any FWD or RWD vehicle is.
Personally, I find that my small cars usually do better in the snow than
an SUV. They tend to "glide on top" of the snow.

Either way, you have to know your limitations. I've seen a number of
large vehicles wrecked off the side of winter roads, but I can't say
that I've ever been stuck off the road due to snow myself (knock on wood).

When I had a significant commute to work could not help but notice that
when the roads were snow covered and icy the majority of vehicles that
had gone off the road were SUVs, especially jeeps. 4WD and AWD is
certainly handy to help get you moving when there is snow and ice.
Unfortunately, it is not always a good idea to have four wheels all
trying to pull you in the direction in which they are pointed. I had a
close call one day when I was driving through snow in a road with an S
curve. AWD had kicked in and I almost lost it on a curve. I quickly hit
the button to disable the AWL and everything was good.

We had a car crash into a car parked on the street today. It was a prime
parking spot because it's right next to our driveway. You do risk
getting rammed by cars going down the street. I never thought of it that
way. This is the second time that our neighbor got hit by a random car.

The driver was going down the street and crossed the lane and hit a
motorcycle and then a car parked on the street. There was no apparent
reason for that to have happened. No chicken on the road or little kid
chasing after a ball. My son said the guy was unconscious and slumped
down on the passenger seat initially. He was not wearing seat belts.
Those air bags really work!

The paramedic said the driver refused to be taken to the hospital. She
said she smelled booze on his breath. When we left to go home, the guy
didn't look so good. He looked like his condition was worsening.
Hopefully, he ain't dead because his car was pushed into our condo's
driveway and it sits there still.

Anyway, it was good fun to go outside and meet/talk with the residents
of this condo. We should have events/mixers like this every month.

Hawaii sounds like a dangerous place! =( I've only witnessed a car crash
once, and it was at moderate speed around 50 km/h or so. Still, not very
pleasant.

You come from the land of ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the
hot springs flow. Now that sounds dangerous. My understanding is that
when it snows, people start driving stoopid on the mainland. Da
Hawaiians don't drive stoopid. We like to drive extra slow at all times.
We like to drive Toyota Tacoma to be extra safe. I wish I had Toyota
Tacoma. I see the spelling as "Taco Ma."

It is very beautiful, the dog too!

In sweden, the government regulates when everyone has to switch to winter
tires. The news warns the swede when the weather will be bad and tells
them to slow down.

I think most people I know tend to be more careful during winter, but of
course, due to the laws of nature, accidents tend to happen more
frequently during winter. Oh, and around midsummer as well.

In the land of the midnight sun, I'm thinking that you'd have sun visors
mounted on the dashboard of your car. That would be cool.

As we all know, the song mostly remains the same.

Those winter tires are a marketing gimmick. There are lots of all season
tires with good tread patterns that work fine in these parts. Winter
tires with softer rubber may be of some use much further north. That
softer material wears faster.

I cheated and checked statistics in the Ontario Road Safety Report. The
coldest snowiest months of the year see the fewest accidents. Fatal and
personal injury accidents start increasing in May.

My belief is that the greatest surf spot and the greatest guitarists in
the world are places and people that nobody's ever heard about. My
friend was a pretty good/serious guitarist. People expected him to be a
professional musician. He wasn't interested in being a performing monkey
- he went to India and learned how to write Sanskrit instead.

Here's a goofy thing that I just saw. That boy was born to play the

5000 miles? That's incredibly low miles. I've never had a car with 5000
miles on it. Perhaps you mean 50,000 miles. That Tacoma looks brand new.
Congratulations. What happened - were you in a coma for the last 11
years?

I saw a truck with a bumper sticker - "Yes, this is my truck. No, I
cannot help you move house."

I had two pickups when I was younger. I learned that when you have a
pickup truck friends and relatives seem to think that you have nothing
better to do on weekends than to help them move or to make runs to the
dump for them.
The bumper sticker is funny because it's true. We have to move some
stuff from A to B so we're scrambling to borrow a truck. Too bad we
don't have the Transit Connect panel van in our hands yet. That would be
helpful.

With a 4WD, you can lose control, at a higher speed, with the same effect.
I've known people who never figured that out.
Nevertheless, if one knows what they are doing, 4WD will go way further
on a gnarly road.

While I live on a steep hill, fortunately, the city is good about
keeping up with it as soon as it snows. My car is parked off-road
within feet of the street. All I do is brush off the ground in front
with a broom, then sweep off the car, and by then it's warm enough to
go. I haven't even bought bags of salt for a few years now.

We don't have any salt here. I forgot the stuff doesn't store well to
the next year.
It keeps. It is millions of years old. The problem is that humidity
causes it to clump together. You just need to fluff it up once in a
while. I usually dump it into a big pail or a bin. There will be a hard
crust on top but if you jab something like a big screwdriver into it the
crust breaks up and it is loose below that.

It keeps. It is millions of years old. The problem is that humidity
causes it to clump together. You just need to fluff it up once in a
while. I usually dump it into a big pail or a bin. There will be a
hard crust on top but if you jab something like a big screwdriver
into it the crust breaks up and it is loose below that.

It's generally a good idea to push the snow down the street so that when
the plow comes it will push to down past your drive way. If you push it
in the direction from which the plow is coming it is just going to push
it back across the end of your driveway. If you are only getting a
couple inches it is no big deal. When you get a foot or more it matters.

People need to stop thinking if they drive a big vehicle it can defeat
nature. 4WD just means all four wheels are spinning. It does not mean
you have traction on ice or snow or that you can't spin off the road
right into a tragic situation. If you don't absolutely *have* to go out
when it's snowing and the roads are icy, don't.

4WD can be a big help. If you are trying to get through snow, and
especially if you are on a slope, it is definitely helpful to have more
tires turning in the direction you want to go. It delivers about the
same amount of power but spread over four tires instead of one so less
chance it is just going to spin. The thing that people seem to have a
hard thing dealing with is that each one of those wheels is going to be
pulling or pushing you in the direction it is facing. If you have front
end drive and are rounding a curve in the road the drive wheel is
pulling you along in the direction you are steering. If the 4WD is
kicked in the the front wheels are pulling you around the bend but the
the rear wheels are trying to push you straight ahead so there is an
increased chance that you will spin out. Most drivers know to turn into
the skid, but then you shift the angle of those rear wheels that want to
push you straight.

Use 4WD to get going and then switch it off, or, if the snow and mud is
really bad leave it on but keep the speed down and avoid oversteering.

You're partially correct about snow. My husband's true 4WD vehicle
is a beast in snow, but you have to drive carefully.

Icy roads are generally not much of a problem here, considering how
assiduously the various road authorities apply salt -- even before
precipitation starts falling.

They are smart of apply it early. Salt does not melt snow and ice. It
serves to reduce the melting point of the precipitation. Around here
they apply salt ahead of or right at the start of an event and it
creates a brine sandwich. Then when the plows come along they skim of
the layer of snow on top of that rather than allowing the snow to pack
down and have the plow ride over top. Sand is applied later for
traction. There is enough salt mixed into the sand to stop it from
freezing into big chunks.

Really? I can put salt on top of ice and it will melt a hole right
through, provided the ice is not too thick.

When I lived in TN I'd buy rock salt to put on the walkway leading up to
the front door. It definitely melted the ice. Not sure how it works on
roads; DOT didn't have anything but sand trucks and those were only used
on major streets to provide a little traction. No plows.

If they are white Americans there is a good chance they have English or

People seem to neglect the role of Viking presence and culture in

4WD gets you going. It can also get you in trouble. When all four wheels
are propelling you at the same rate you get messed up on corners and
curves. The front wheels are trying to pull you in the direction in
which they are pointed while the back wheels are trying to push you
straight forward. It is interesting to note the kinds of vehicles in
the ditches in snow storms. An amazing number of them are 4WD.

I enjoyed it when it snowed here back in 2016. Gave me a chance to don
some heavy boots and a wool coat and gloves which have been unused in
the closet for over a decade. I enjoyed walking around in it with a
friend from across the street. It was so very quiet and peaceful; a
fresh blanket of snow that was very pretty. It was gone by the next day
so it was fleeting but it was enjoyable.

A blanket of snow does make things serene. I'm not sure if it is the
physical attributes or the fact that there are less people and cars out.
I used to walk the dog every night and it was quiet.

Snow cover also dampens or absorbs sound waves. So things are much
quieter, with almost no background noises. You perceive this as "serene".
