My ex-wife has been trying to locate a recipe that appeared in one of those
small recipe books that came with her Rival Crockpot that I bought her in
the 1970's. The recipe is for "sloppy joes" and everyone raved about them,
but over the years she has lost the booklet. Does anyone happened to have
such a booklet from Rival during that era?
Thanks for any and all help.

This would be close

Crockpot Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

3 pounds lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped, about 1 cup
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 (12 ounces) bottle prepared chili sauce or ketchup
1 (6 ounces) can tomato paste
2 to 3 tablespoons brown sugar, to taste
1 to 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
toasted sandwich buns

PREPARATION:
In large deep skillet or Dutch Oven, brown ground beef with onions,
celery and green pepper; drain off fat. Place ground beef mixture in
crockpot and stir in chili sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar,
Worcestershire sauce, and pepper. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours,
stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasonings. Serve Sloppy Joes on
toasted sandwich buns. Makes about 20 sandwiches, great for a party.

Yes! Kudos! I was trying to remember whether I had any Rival
booklets (that's easy enough, since I do have lists), but
finding any such thing would be next to impossible.

Incredibly annoying... I finally found the booklet for my Rival Model
3100, 3 1/2 quart crock-pot, and of the 25 recipes it lists, there is NO
recipe for Sloppy Joes therein!

I must've got a bad book!

Here is a copy of the front page of the booklet - note "booklet." It is
soft pamphlet 47 ppp 4-1/2x6" Sloppy Joes recipe is on p. 22.

I had written that mine is 3qt on the front, but inside are recipes that say
what to do with a 5-qt. I don't know when you bought yours. I thought I
had bought mine in the 70's, but I notice the booklet says 1982, so I was
mistaken on that point.

The recipe on the Crock-pot.com site looks better. It doesn't
use some unnamed, random "sloppy joe mix".

Ingredients:
Ingredients
3 lbs ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 tsp minced garlic
1 œ c. ketchup
1 green pepper, chopped
œ c. water
4 Tbs brown sugar
4 Tbs mustard
4 Tbs vinegar
4 Tbs Worcestershire™
3 tsp chili powder
Hamburger buns

Directions:

In a skillet, brown ground beef, onions and garlic. Drain off
fat. Place meat and all other ingredients in slow cooker. Cover;
cook on Low 6-8 hours or High 3-4 hours. Serve on hamburger buns.

Does anyone have a recipe for the 'sloppy joe seasoning mix'?
I don't at all like sweet sloppy joes, so anything that has ketchup or
brown sugar as ingredients, which seem to be about 90% of them, I just
skip over. The McCormick seasoning mix is pretty good, but I now have to
watch my sodium intake so now need to skip prepared mixes too.
Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

I didn't know there ever WAS a "sloppy joe seasoning mix" LOL. I suspect
that the recipe existed long before McCormack's packaged a mix was
marketed? How did we ever eat before packaged foods?!?! <she says with
tongue in cheek>
I just used the old recipe I found in Joy of Cooking or Betty Crocker
(but am too lazy to get out of bed and go downstairs and look, sorry!)

I never use those seasoning mix packs because you can always do better
adding what you like without the massive amount of salt.

Just add the seasoning/taste you like. For sloppy joes I would add more
aromatics to the above including celery and garlic and some chili powder
and a couple grinds of black pepper. If you want to thicken it just add
a cornstarch slurry at the end and let it come back to a boil.

Why don't you prepare your own, with ground meat, no salt added tomato
sauce, aromatics (onion, bell pepper), and herbs/spices (black pepper,
garlic, hot pepper if desired), you don't need any stinkin' mix.

This is the the *real* Corck-Pot recipe for Sloppy Joes. I didn't
think I liked sweet Sloppy Joes either until I used this recipe.

http://www.crock-pot.com/recipedetail.aspx?recipeid=1401

I tried using less sugar and it just doesn't good. The sugar in
here is what makes it, IMO.

And a picture of the results:

We just simmer the hamburger in barbecue sauce. Works for us.
