I've been reading with interest the comments about people who order
high calorie food and a diet coke. Well, I'm one of those people
who do. But, the reason is because "real" soda is waaay too sweet. It's
cloying in fact. The diet soda is sweet but not in a "lets swallow all the
contents
of a sugar bowl" sort of way.

But then there are the people who do *think* they are ordering low calorie
foods (and aren't) and make sure to get a diet drink with them. What comes to
mind is the pizza restaurant that I worked at in a college town. They had a
pretty good salad bar there (lots of variety-not your usual fare). And at the
beginning of the school year we would get groups of sorority girls that would
come in and load up on the salad bar (healthy, right?) then put gobs of
dressing on their salads (this was before lo-cal dressings) and then order
pitchers of diet coke to wash it down. Well, they looked a "little" different
at the end of the school year.
Yeah, but definitely not weight wise. Say whatever you want about sorority girls, but their choices of nothing but salad and diet drinks (including light beer) just can't be beat, if you want zero fat with skin and bones.

No help there. No one can or will tell a man how he wants a girl's body to look.

More importantly, look for matching personality. Everyone's looks go to
hell eventually. Looks are fleeting, personality can last a lifetime.

Agreed.. skinny women are meh, at best. No thanks.. I'm totally

I'm certainly not a fan of it. I drink unsweetened tea, plain black
coffee, and mostly water. That's about it.. a rare exception for a
glass of OJ or lemonade, maybe once per month.

Not entirely now, because on a 1-10 scale, sometimes her face can be a 10 +++ so much that who cares about how her body looks. But that's such a rarity. Maybe a girl just needs a 10 +++ body to make up for not having a 10 +++ face. But every 3 or 4 years, I see a girl's face that's so pretty I don't care what the body looks like.

And who cares about personality ... everyone has bad days.

It's not impressive at all. It's just what google chooses to show
them on any given day. I'm sure you can find old threads/posts from
the late 80's early 90's if you search for "***@netcom.com".

mostly likely dead?? She certainly doesn't post here, and this old post was
drug up from the depths by a dumbass such as bruce bowser??
I'd like to go on record stating that I find these 24+ year old threads
quite amusing, and I don't see the harm in pulling them up every now and
again. It's a nice switch up from the norm around here.
Keep doing you, Bruce B.
I don't see the problem either. As long as you have something new to
add to an old thread, why not? Sorry, Sergeant Jill.

I've been reading with interest the comments about people who order
high calorie food and a diet coke. Well, I'm one of those people
who do. But, the reason is because "real" soda is waaay too sweet. It's
cloying in fact. The diet soda is sweet but not in a "lets swallow all the
contents

Most people here were not here 24 years ago so an old post is like a new
post now. We can all talk about it again, it's new.

I think we are overdue for the "how to cut an onion" debate. That's
always a fun argument. ;)

Surely that depends on how it will be used later on.

I heartily anticipate the next debate. I have ideas involving small power
tools to remove the interior to shape them suitable for stuffing.

The most complex idea is creating a nested set of diverse vegetables
similar to Russian Dolls. Sure, it would be labour-intensive. But there
are Millenials who will pay for stuff like that. (pun intended)

I like reading the old posts more than the new ones. The old ones were mostly about foods. The new ones are mostly about other people and where they can shove their opinions. Perhaps it'll all blow over when these troubled times are over. Here's a little light music - maybe from before you were born. These ladies are old enough to be your dear aunts. Without even looking, let me guess : (to a ukulele) "Ooh-ooh-oooooh
Somewhere over the rainbow ...
Way up high
And the dreams that you dream of ...
Once in a lullaby, oh
… Somewhere over the rainbow ...
Bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dream of ...
Dreams really do come true-ooh-ooh
Someday I'll wish upon a star ...
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops ...
High above the chimney tops that's where
You'll find me, oh oh ooohh ...
… Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly ...
And the dream that you dare to
Oh why, oh why can't I? I
… Someday I'll wish upon a star ...
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops ...
High above the chimney top that's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow way up high ...
And the dream that you dare to
Why, oh why can't I? I
… Ooh-ooh-ooh ...
Close but not quite. I don't much care for that song. I like this song - it was written by a Vietnamese guy named Willie Dann. Strange.

They had a big falling out and became ex-girlfriends, without ever

working on a comeback. Solo careers don't always work as well.

I think we are overdue for the "how to cut an onion" debate. That's
always a fun argument. ;)
OK, let me start, I have a good one. The last time that I mentioned
this, I think it set you off (something to the extent of, "that's the
stupidest thing I've ever heard").

I don't own a food processor.

Oh, please. It's "How to Boil a Peelable Egg". And that's been
solved. Cold eggs right from the fridge into simmering/boiling
Water. It's no longer a theory - it's proven fact (which is pretty
good considering gravity is still just a theory).

Take a paring knife (not ouch sharp), half an onion (quarter if larger),
and peel outer skin. Hold knife handle cupped in right hand, blade
facing your thumb. Take each onion chunk in your left hand, and quickly
dice into chunks over pot or otherwise, using your thumb as the knife
stop. If you are talented, you can hold the onion and knife in the same
hand, whilst chopping both, and it's a one-handed task.
See at exactly 3:07 minutes into this video.. not the exact same way,
but very similar.

I chop onions and basically all vegetables the same way. Clara is the
only person I've seen other than my grandmothers chop onions and the
like this way. I guess that's where I learned it from, I don't know..
that's just how I do it. I can't recall the last time that I used a
cutting board for anything, but it's been a good while. Maybe when
butchering up a large piece of meat.
What do you do when you want a precise quarter-inch dice, or an even
smaller mince?
Cindy Hamilton
I take my time with mincing garlic, and I get it small enough. I've
never needed onions or most things to be any more precise, they
typically cook down anyway.

Our cooking styles are different. I often use raw onion, or don't
subject my food to such long cook times. For example, when I
make vegetable soup, I try for green beans that are tender-crisp.
I like to _chew_ my food.

That's a fair point.. I blame my grandmothers.. to many peoples'
definition, I cook the heck out of everything. Sometimes tender-crisp
would be better. I have more fresh string beans in the fridge, and I am
gong to try to cook them less as you suggested last time. That being
said, I prefer soups to be well cooked with the veggies softened.

My grandmother and mother cooked the heck out of everything. As
an adult, I developed a preference for dishes where every component
is somewhat distinct, yet contribute to the greater whole. That's why
I have little use for a crockpot; at the end of cooking the entire dish
all tastes the same.
Cindy Hamilton
I bought a goodwill crock-pot for potlucks at work several years ago.
The only thing I've ever used it for is to keep food hot at work, or
occasionally to cook a dish like scalloped potatoes with cheese/bacon
(typically what I'd bring, and I'd never have leftovers to take home).

maller mince?
Why would you need such a precisely cooked dice? I can't imagine doing
prep work for a cook who is that anal.
I don't use a ruler, but when I make lentil soup, I want the onions to be about
the same size as the lentils. I slice the onion into quarter-inch slices then
turn them 90 degrees and slice the slices into quarter-inch dice. Obviously,
where they break apart along the layers, they're less than a quarter inch.
Easy as pie and surprisingly quick.
I wouldn't ask anyone to do my prep work. My husband often asks me to
do his prep work for him.
I often do the prep work for my wife. She is is not very agile with a
knife. Things work fasted in our kitchen when she hands me the
ingredients and I chop them up.

Not really, rinsing a knife and a cutting board is a whole lot faster
than cleaning a food processor. I got rid of my food processor long
ago, I found it totally useless and a big space and time waster.
And space is a big deal here in the Bronx. You know the Bronx is a lot like Brooklyn. No one is married or literate and all the ladies are walking around with babies and everyone else is addicted to drugs, needles or alcohol. Like you. But when sober, handling a knife could be scary for me. If I'm at a relative's place, I'll stick with my food processor. Its just as easy to clean as that knife, cutting board, or meat grinder. Just stuff it in the dish washer.

Time doesn't mean much in Google Groups Usenet - you only believe that it does because your Usenet server has a retention policy measured in weeks. As it goes, posts from 24 years ago are a lot more interesting than your repetitious, tedious, brand-new posts. Beats me why that should be. Perhaps you should up your game.

I just re-read your post. Perhaps, had you of been pleasant the first
time, and pointed out that I was replying to a forged post, I would have
taken note and apologized. You didn't mention that you were forged.
You just snapped and tried to bite my head off, throwing insults and

Here seems to be an instance, where I try to bring peace/sense/logic,
and you conveniently vamoose.. you requested that I point these things
out, or something to that extent (3 examples..)

I'm certain that you won't apologize, but at the least, try to not have
a conniption. :)

BTW, I didn't try to "prove you incorrect" over the forged post.. I had
no clue it was a forged post at first. It seemed to me that you were
suggesting that I inappropriately snipped and missattributed names as
they were posted. Your aggressive posting style in response would make
anyone defensive and push back. Communication is key.

Here's my lunch today. It's spicy pork belly.I like pork belly and spicy so I had to get it. For the terminally stupid, I bought this. That's why it's in a styrofoam box. For future reference, stuff that's in a throw-away container were not prepared by me. Stuff that's in my dishes were cooked by me..

I'm well aware that the styrofoam container meals were take-aways. I'm
not sure why others here can't seem to process that. Perhaps it makes
them feel better about themselves to point it out?

It's not about making us "feel better". Anyone can order take-out and
post pics of it. That's not cooking.

Very true, but at least a food post is somewhat on topic, and also give
an idea of a meal to try at home. I don't see a need to tear someone
down over it (not directed at anyone in specific).

Sure it is. *Somebody* cooked it and it was probably better than the

Yeah, just as tedious as your Styrofoam plated meals.
No kidding! He rarely posts anything food related other than some
photos of take-out meals in styrofoam containers, mostly involving white
rice with something on top. The least he could do is plate it and
pretend he cooked it.

"Outback Steakhouse" offers their "bloomin' onion" as an appetizer but
it's better to order for a full, one course meal for 2 people.

Two of us couldn't even finish that. You don't actually get full from
it, you just get tired of eating just that over and over.

But then came our main meal, steak and potatoes. By then, we weren't
even hungry anymore so we asked them to box it up for take-home.

In middlebrow restaurants the appetizer gives customers something to
stick in their maw while they're waiting for the main event.
In fine dining restaurants the appetizer gives the chef an opportunity to
display his style and give a preview of things to come. It can be a
little something that features flavors more intense than an entree, so
you wouldn't want to eat a lot of it.
Cindy Hamilton
When travelling, big evening meals don't suit so I usually order an
appetiser followed by another one for the main course.
I often order an appetizer as my main course, generally preceded by a
salad. In Chinese restaurants I've been known to order a bowl of hot and
sour soup and a serving of rice.

I don't have much use for fine dining. The fact that I have no appreciation
of wine doesn't help in those situations. "Just water, please."
This Asian-fusion place is the closest I come to it:
<https://pacificrimbykana.com/our-menu/>
The prices are not very high for fine dining, reflecting the casual Midwestern
college town in which it's located.

If I ordered from their current menu, I think I'd have the sablefish
or the duck. We eschew an appetizer, preferring to save room
for dessert. The warm chocolate cake is divine.

I disagree. All those styrofoam meals are about cooked food and they
probably taste much better than some of the crap cooked at home by many
people here.

His takeout pics give you an idea of good food. No different than asking

I've been reading with interest the comments about people who order
high calorie food and a diet coke. Well, I'm one of those people
who do. But, the reason is because "real" soda is waaay too sweet. It's
cloying in fact. The diet soda is sweet but not in a "lets swallow all the
